Pros: Good Quality

Cons: A bit Expensive for Mexican Food

If I could give it a -5 stars I would. My husband took me a month ago and we had a horrible time. The service was horrible. We sat for 30 min before we even got attended to. Only because we called the manager over. The food was disgusting. The supposed ceviche was a horrible tasting shrimp cocktail. The main dishes were tasteless chicken with soggy rice. A few days later I noticed that in our checking account they had overcharged us. We contacted the restaurant and we basically got the brush off. Overall a horrible experience. NEVER AGAIN!!!??

This place totally deserves the five diamond award it won! I always order there when i want mexican food, and trust me, there are two other mexican restaurants nearby i can order from, but they never come to mind. Though i've eaten food from Mama many times, i've eaten inside the place once but it was still pretty good. And the band and table-side quac was amazing! the one downside was that it was crowded.

Two friends and i went to eat here a few weeks ago and I have been meaning to write a review ever since! I was shocked to see a negative review on here, especially because we had such an amazing night! This wasnt my first time here, but it was my friends. We ordered the guacemole, which is fresh-made at the table! Im personally not a guacemole eater, but the boys were scraping the dish trying to get every little bite! One of my friends ordered a shrimp dish, and he went crazy for it!! Unfortunately, I cant remember the name of it. My other friend and I split the surf and turf fajitas for two and we were in fajita heaven!! The meat is amazing and all the veggies taste so fresh! We also loved the seasoning of them! The boys also ordered a couple drinks, which they said were amazing...me, just a diet coke. The bill wasnt cheap, but we thought it was appropriate considering we were eating at a top Mexican restaurant in the city! All three of us already have plans to eat dinner here agin in a few weeks!! Definitely worth the price...this Mexican food is awesome!!

Pros: MEXICAN FOOD--gorgeous restaurant!!

Cons: none--ill be back

I visited Mama Mexico today for lunch with two friends.

Service: The reason I will never go back to this restaurant is definitely because of the service. Initially the wait staff was very attentive. It was typically the type of service I would expect with prices like that, but when the bill came it was an entirely different story. My friend and I both ordered a lunch special off the menu but the waitress apparently brought us a nearly identical lunch special that was NOT on the menu that also cost $4 more. When we saw the price on the bill for $20 for our lunch entrees we asked her to clarify. The waitress then proceeded to tell us that we should have informed her that the entree was incorrect before we ate it--albeit we had no idea what the difference between the two entrees was besides the price. Anyway, to make a long story short, our waitress just left us at our table and never took care of our problem so my friend had to get up and talk to someone else who also told us we should have told them before we ate it and that he couldnt alter the price on the bill because the manager was not in. In total we waited for about 20 minutes for them to tell us they couldn't take $8 dollars off a $123.00 dollar check. Their lack of problem solving skills was astonishing. Someone needs to let them know that the customer is always right.

Food: I was initially shocked by the food prices for lunch. The food was okay, but nothing spectacular. I ordered a plate of enchiladas, one with filet mignon, one with shrimp and another with chicken. The dish was very generous on sauce but lacking the flavor I look for when I want Mexican food. The guacamole (an astonishing $11 dollars for a small bowl) was also bland. I found myself mixing it with the salsa just for some kick.

Went with an old group of friends - we had a wonderful time!

Seating is a little tight and we were practically sitting with our neighbors- but this place is a fun loud atmosphere - be prepared!

our waiter made us fresh guacamole at our table which was awesome and the drinks were amazing! we racked up quite a bill so the management kept sending us shots and complimentary drinks.

I ordered the red snapper in green sauce-- yum! The food is the most traditional I have had in NYC and this did not let me down! It was fantastic and we had a wonderful time

They also had a mariachi band playing and when one of the members of our table started singing along with them everyone in the restaurant applauded!

Fun for large groups!! Not fun if you want a quiet romantic dinner

Talk about a fun night out. The most important thing about this restaurant is the company that you bring with you. Yes, the food is ok. Yes the drinks are fine. The great thing about Mama Mexico is that it lends it self really well to having a loud, rowdy, and fun time. Mama Mexico isn?t enveloping to the point that you feel like you left Manhattan and ended up in Tijuana but the colors are bright and the mariachi band doesn?t let you have any deep, depressing and pensive dickens moments. No, the food wasn?t amazing, but it was actually fine, (maybe a little on the expensive side.) I had a camarones cancun, which was shrimp in a red cream sauce with onions and peppers ($19) and a few mojitos, which definitely cheered me up. My friends all had one version of a burrito or another but everybody?s food was ok. What actually bothered me was that the service was so hurried that they couldn?t take a second to do their jobs with ease. We had a few more drinks in lieu of desert, which I prefer any way because if I am going to pack on the calories it might as well get me a little buzzed. No offense to flan, but I will skip the desert this time.

this place was recommended to us by a chef downtown, but it was lame and the food was mediochre and way overpriced for how mediochre it was. everyone at my table got either fish burritos or fajitas, and the food was boring, as if it was americans trying to do mexican food. it wasn't authentic in the least. there is a loud mariachi band that plays constantly, and the waiters will upsell to you without telling you the costs of things -- then you get your bill and realize the little bowl of guacamole you shared at the table was $12. i've had much better guacamole for much cheaper at bonita's in williamsburg. and i've had much better seafood burritos at downtown bakery in the east village -- for $8, not $16 like at mama mexico. do yourself a favor and don't waste your money at mama mexico, you will be sorry you paid so much for such a lousy meal.

Not sure if i am being unfair, but being from California I guess my "standard" of mexican food is different from what east coast mexican food is. Have been to this place 4-5 times, with several different people and I can only say the good is horrible - I mean really really bad. This food is bland, uninspiring, tasteless. The "spanish rice" is just white rice soaked in tomato sauce, the guacamole is horrible overpriced at 12 bucks and not even that good. If this is mexican food, no one sent me the memo. Just a really bad, overpriced place. The only people who seemed to be enjoying it were all the gringo's that live on the UWS, surely not a place for those of taste. If you want mexican food, go to california,

First i have to agree with the previous reviews. I always wanted to go to this place because a couple of my friends had recommended it. From the minute my boyfriend and i got in it was a total mess. First i asked to be seated by the window. The guy instead wants to offer a sit in between two people. Keep in mind this place has plenty of seats and it was not pack. Then they sat us by the window, but in a crowned corner, every time someone pasted by we had to make sure they didn?t spill our drinks. They took forever to bring the menu---hello the menu!! It got to a point i had to ask for the menu. When we finally got our drinks, my boyfriend?s orange juice was horrible. When he try to tell the waiter it wasn?t good, the waiter argued back, then finally he took it back. I felt I was been rush from the minute i sat down. I thought why are they rushing when it wasn?t pack nor they had a line of people waiting. When we did get the food it was horrible. I tend to be picky about food, but my boyfriend will eat anything. This time he didn?t. He?s food looked as if they had cooked it the day before and heat it up again. I only took about 2 bits out of my plate. The one thing I could not believe was that they actually changed the tablecloth while we were still sitting!!! Who in the world does something like this? Other thing is that some waiters are just standing there looking to see if you are done to get ride of your stuff. Im telling you this restaurant should be called ?Rushing?. When we did get our bill, it was very confusing. Instead of putting something like drinks or beverage they put something else and we had to ask what was that. This place is too pricey, has horrible service, nasty food, therefore I will never go back to this place and will not recommend it to anyone.

Pros: close to subway

Cons: service, price...too many to name

Went a couple of times but won't back at least someone pay my bill. The musicians are fine for the first two songs but afterwards become annoying... the food is ok... nothing special. It tasted the same as the enchilladas I buy for lunch in a chain restaurant. As per the prices, they want to look upscale.... NO NO NO NO... quality of food and atmosphere don't match price.

I went here for a friend's birthday recently and it was one of the worst dining experiences I've had in 13 years in New York City. First, it took about 30 minutes to get our first round of drinks. Then it took way longer to get our food. They brought my friend a beef enchilada instead of the vegetarian one she ordered. She went tried to send it back they actually argued with her! After a long time they brought out the vegetarian one. Halfway through our meal they bussed all our full water glasses but left our empty drink glasses on the table. They also changed the tablecloth as we were still sitting and eating. After ages we got the bill and they charged us for both enchiladas, incluing the one they brought by mistake! We pointed it out and again, they argued with us. At no point did they ever apologize or anything. We left a 10%tip which we thought was generous considering how nasty and inept they were. The waiter came and - guess what - argued with us again, saying we were "supposed to tip 20%." Also, the strolling musiciains are really annoying and in your face. The food is mediocre and way overpriced. I don't understand why it is always crowded! Spare yourself a nightmare and save your money and stay far away!

I live a few blocks from the Broadway location, and I've noticed that the food has detioriorated in quality over the years. The restaurant has become a bad tourist trap - lively and colorful, but with overpriced bland food. We ordered spicy guacamole and got mashed avocado with no flavor. Mushy flour tortillas abounded, and my burrito was about the most boring thing I've ever eaten. Mama Mexico has lost its way.

I went with a friend last night and we were seated promptly. We had several waiters who were very attentive, although bizarrely, immediately after we had finished our meal, they removed our plates, took everything off the table, and changed out the only slightly crumby paper table covering. It struck me as very intrusive. Although the manager stopped by to check in twice during our meal and I didn't find the mariachi band deafening, both the food and the prices were unforgivably subpar. I ordered the Poblanos del Campo ($14) which were all but flavorless, not at all spicy, coated with a flavorless breading and covered with, yes, flavorless red sauce. The margaritas and pina coladas, clocking in at $9, also did not strike me as a good value. While this might seem like a fun idea for a birthday restaurant, and clearly they're equipped to handle groups, if you care about taste or value, run, don't walk, to another restaurant.

You might try this place if you like vermin. We had some edible (but pricey) food, served slowly. Then, I kid you not, a couple of vermin crawled out of a hole in the BOOTH we were sitting in. (City Search blocks the m-word describing the type of vermin, which is totally unconscionable, I thought this was America last time I checked. In any case, I'll call them "mousses".)
When the waiter saw it, he said "they must have run in through the door". (Did you ever see that Fawlty Towers episode where the waiter's pet mousse escapes and gets in the food? It was like that.)
They then proceeded to add 18% gratuity to the bill, even though we only had 5 people! Why I didn't call the health inspector, I don't know, I feel a bit guilty about it.
Anyway, the bubonic plague and mousse-harboring, tip-snatching waiters are great here, try it. Don't worry, they came in from outside and just built a nest real quick. I'm sure they are very clean.

Mama Mexico happens to be one of my favorite resturants. This place is just an experience, its a get happy fast type of place with the loud festive music and the waiters walking around pouring tequila in people's mouths. You'll find yourselves clapping and joining in with the mariachi band playing popular spanish tunes. The decor is very colorful and appealing. Its a great place for the family and/or friends. The food is great and the guacamole is even better!! Highly Recommend.

Ive been going to this place for years. It started out as a small family business but grew overnight. It was a fun atmosphere. The live mariachis, excellent food; service was awesome, and free tequila shots. The decor made it feel like Mexico! However, in the past two years I noticed service has declined but the demand of business has increased. The food doesnt taste the same and service is rushed. The menu outside has a different one compare to the one given to you. I rarely go since its not the same as before. But I have a glimpse of hope, my once favorite spot to eat, the place I shared many memories with family and friends will come again. In the meantime Ill check on it from time to time. I do recommend the one on the east side 49th street. Ive had better luck there.

Cons: service from time to time, price

This place was so bad I was embarassed that I brought my out-of-town guests here! Let's go step-by-step:
1. We waited 15 minutes just to get menus.
2. We needed a high chair and they took 15 minutes to bring it to the table.
3. Drinks: Each of us decided to get a cocktail so two banana daq's and 1 lemon Marg. were ordered. The drinks were so off that we all thought we tasted chemicals instead of rum and tequilla.
4. Modified orders (i.e. no lettuce or no beans) were completely neglected.
5. My friend's meal came out 10 minutes later than everyone else's meal.
6. We objected at the ill flavor of the drinks and the manager was not understanding at all. We asked what was actually put into the drink and the server said the fruit was extract, while the manager said it was fresh fruit.
7. After the meal the check didnt come for 20 minutes after we requested it. They even bussed the table before giving us the check.
8. Then they ran my credit card for $55 more than the actual price of the bill.

Bottom line: this place is terrible. I would not recommend this to my worst enemy! My rating says 1 star, but if -10 would have been an option, it would have been chosen.

Now, I used to live in a Mexican neighborhood. There were few things I loved about it more than chowing down on a delicious authentic taco. Simple but amazing. This isn't Mama Mexico. This is to authentic Mexican what a high-caliber restaurant is to a good diner. Different. Not necessarily better or worse, depending on circumstance. The seafood here is particularly good. Their enchiladas mosqueteras are amazing and the guacamole never disappoints. Good stuff.

If you are going to charge 11 dollars for guacamole, its probably best to say thats the cost before asking people if they would like guacamole the second they sit down (and before you are given the menu). This is an example of the vastly over-priced and very unauthentic "Mexican" food served at this restaurant. In this day and age, particularly with the widespread availability of quality Mexican ingredients, I expect to at least get Mexican cheese on my entrees, not mozarella. Give this one a pass, there is far better ACTUAL Mexican food available in New York at significantly better prices.

DON'T BELIEVE THEIR OVERALL RATING!!! The place is nicely designed and THAT"S IT !!! It's LOUD (large space with screaming kids and music too low to hear), EXPENSIVE (burritos are $17 !) the service is pushy and the food looks good but is completely average (chewy steak, tasteless rice and beans). There are SO many better Mexican places out there! I think the only reason it's busy is because of it's location and upscale design. Oh, one more thing - my wife asked for her nachos with ground beef versus chicken and they charged us an extra $3.00 for the substitution! (even though ground beef costs less than chicken)

I've been here a few times (although not in the last 2 years), and used to think it was good. I went this past week, and it was a nightmare. The waiter brought the wrong food and charged us for food and drinks we didn't order. The manager didn't believe us when we contested our bill. The manager was so argumentative and unprofessional, he was verbally abusive and almost became physically violent.

This place was so good. I enjoyed every bite of m chimichangas. The guacomole is so tasty and spicy and best of all made fresh on the spot. The margharitas are great and the service is fast and attentive. There is no waiting an hour for your food to come. Try it..you won't regret it ...

I went to dine at Mama Mexico, with hopes that it would live upto all the awards that they have on there walls. Unfortunetly, that was not the case the service was terrible, we were rushed to choose our appetizer without even having a menu to choose from, given flat soft drinks, and then not given enough time to choose our entrees. I ordred the tamales, and my husband ordered the tacos, when I recieved my entree, the tamales were like 2 pieces of brick with sprinkled cheese on top, the beans were dry and had no flavor. The taco dish, was horrible as well the tacos, were soggy and again with dry beans. With so many great Mexican places open in the city why do keep these disgusting places open?????????????????????

I went with a group of friends - the guacamole was great but the mango margarita tasted like medicine. When we asked to exchange the margarita, the pitcher was taken away and we were told by the manager that we could no longer order ANY margarita. He kept on saying that they all taste like this. This type of service is unacceptable especially when you have so many other equally good mexican options in the city.

The people writing good reviews for this place must be getting paid. Apparently making a reservation for 2 for 7p.m. is too much to ask for so we waited for 1/2 hour. Then we were seated at this somewhat isolated table and were thankful because every other table seemed cramped. Oh, but that didn't last long. We were asked to move ourselves (with our drinks and chips) to a another table because the one we were at was "reserved". At this point we were totally disgusted and cramped. The tables are so close together you have no choice but to strike up a conversation with the strangers next to you. We complained to the manager and he offered to move us (nope, no discount). We order the special (seafood stuffed red snapper) and aseafood rice dish, which were nothing special. I would never send anyone to this place.

I've been here a few times as my friend lives about a block away on the upper west side. It's the most prominent restaurant on the block, and you can proably tell from the exterior that it's fairly trendy/pricey. The food is fairly good though overpriced, and the drinks are good. At night they try to reproduce the whole Baja Mexico Spring Break atmosphere with the unwanted alcohol spouts and such. They make guacamole right in front of you and it is delicious.

Be very careful if you bring a group here. My group got charged an outrageuos $63/person for a family-style dinner, including a 23% tip added for the horrible service. They really ripped us off, and they kept bringing pitchers of margaritas even after we said, "no more." The food is miserable, not better than the greasy, slimy Mexican served anywhere else at 1/10 of the price here. The cheesy mariachi band and the guy pouring tequila are the only saving graces. Don't go, and don't ever bring a group.

This place is loud, and by loud, I do mean that you might have to scream at your dinner-mate over the music, but despite the noise, it's obvious that everyone is having a good time. It's a festive and jolly place. Fast-paced. Even though you might be seated right next to another group, you feel as if you have your own space. Margaritas by the pitcher are delicious, if not a bit expensive. But don't get suckered when they come to your table and say "guacamole?" it's $10 and the salsa they're about to plunk down is free.

Stopped in here for lunch a few weeks ago - the place was nearly empty. Service was good but not great - would probably be lackluster if it were really busy. My friend and I had guacamole and the fajita special, both of which were tasty enough but really nothing to write home about. Prices seemed a little on the high side, but not terrible. All in all, it's a good spot to stop in if you need a meal in this 'hood.

I've invited everyone and haven't heard one complaint yet. When I go to a restaurant I HAVE TO CHECK OUT THE RESTROOM: Mama Mexico: spotless & well appointed. The restaurant is clean, vibrant, colorfol, original artwork with a happy happy joy joy feeling. Service is pleasant & attentive. I've been there several times and never felt rushed even if it's busy. The restaurant has expanded over the years & has greatly improved. There are semi-divided areas where large groups, couples & families can all feel comfortable. The Pineapple Tequila: out of this world: VERY DANGEROUS because it's SOOO GOOOOOOD. Food: delicious, creative, & nicely presented, isn't like mom's/grandma's kitchen (that authentic) but it's delicious nonetheless. Topping it off: the Mariachi's who take requests, whenever they start playing patrons start singing along & before you know it the whole restaurant is singing!!!! Lots of fun & still romantic.

My girlfriends and I went there last night and we had a great time. We got seated as soon as we got in. The ambiance and the mariachi was superb. The food is really good and you MUST try their frozen margaritas, they're to die for. The manager bought us a round of pineapple tequilas (you must try) and then came around to pour tequila straight from the bottle. It's great to go with a group. We had a blast, it was great!

In three words or less, to-die-for. That's how I would describe Mama Mexico's Fried Ice-cream.

It's wonderful. I won't give away the details, that would be no fun. I will only say this, creamy vanilla ice-cream, chocolate syrup, a cherry and some think ???? You will not be disappointed.

Enjoy!!!

Pros: Lighting, Drinking, Portions

Cons: , Popularity

.

Polite staff, pretty good food, and I should know, as I eat out almost everyday.

Expect waits when a place is popular in Manhattan, even w/ reservations.

The staff treats customers the way customers treat the staff. If you're rude, they're rude. If you're nice, they'll treat you like kings.

2 parties didn't have everyone their reservation, and waited until everyone arrived to be seated. That's common at almost every single restaurant in Manhattan. They've got to run a business and can't wait around with empty table's while people wait outside.

Our experience there would've probably been quite amazing, if it hadn't been for the rude patrons sitting next to us.

As for the food, it's absolutely amazing. Even crowded, their timing was good. We weren't rushed, they weren't slow.

Had a late lunch on a Friday - food and service were great. Margaritas were even better. Fresh salsa and guacamole (they'll make the guac at your table), we had a few things and all were very good.

Loud music from the mariachis and a festive atmosphere make this a great place to go for a pitcher of sangria and some Mexican food. The food was alright, but the red sangria really was good. If you are looking for a quite, relaxing dinner this is not the place.

Tonight I and seven members of my family went to this awesome (though somewhat loud) restaurant. The food was fantastic though I would not disagree with some that it is somewhat overpriced. It is not your typical mexican fare, bu the mariachi band makes you forget that. The margaritas were terrific! Most of all, what made my night that much more enjoyable, my five-year-old daughter had a blast! She danced to the band, talked loudly (the way that children will do), had balloon hats made by the ballon hat lady and through all of this disturbed no one. That alone made the night totally worth it for me! Not for first dates, or lovey-doveyness, do bring a group of friends and dig in! You've got to try this place!

This place is a truly authentic mexican restaurant, down to the paper-mache and festive lights that hang from the ceiling. A band is always there playing mexican music, and the bartenders are known for pouring tequilla down their patrons throats. The guacamolle is a must, they make it fresh in front of you when you order it. They've got great burritos as well, and their margaritas are amoung the best in the city. Waiters are friendly and attentive, and the seats are a little on the small side, but still comfortable. Not the cheapest Mexican food around, but worth the money.

I love going to restaurants, and I think this one has the distinction of being my least favorite restaurant in all of Manhattan. The food is so overpriced and totally mediocre, they charge about 13 bucks for a plate consisting of a flour tortilla with cheese and a few chicken chunks. It's so loud and unpleasant. Stay away!!

Great place to go eat. After reading other posts, I suggest you go when it's not busy. Myself and two other friends went when the restaurant had five other people in it. The service was great and the food was delicious (especially the guacamole). The food was a little pricy, but I think it's worth it.
