Went to the zoo this weekend for the first time in several years and I was very impressed at how much the zoo had grown and changed. It was clean and everything looked like it was well taken care of. My little nephew who i was babysitting loved the merry go round.

The cost to enter the zoo was a little high, so I expected to have a great experience. To our amazement, all the animals that were actually in their display were either hidden or had their backs to us where we could not see them. I know it's not the zoo's fault of what the animals are doing, but they need to put them on a better diet to give them more energy. The displays were overgrown and looked unclean and horrible. You could not imagine the smells. We barely could stand to glance at the elephants or the flamingos because of the smell coming from them. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that they decided to put the animals up in the middle of the day to feed them or do whatever. The food and drinks sold there were extremely overpriced. We didn't even bother to look in the gift shop. It was not worth my trip there and I felt like we were ripped off.

Riverbanks Zoo has Christmas light display but do not be fooled by their advertisement about it being the only place in town where it snows every night. They have a slideshow and video on their website where children are playing in the snow. We took our grandson there for his birthday and there was not any snow and no one there could tell us why not. I feel this was misleading to the public do not advertise that you have something there but you do not. We had told him all day that he was going to get to play in the snow for his birthday and we drove 200 miles to take him there and then there was snow. I will never take him there again because they mislead us into thinking that snow would be there every night.

Riverbanks Zoo is one of the best I've been to. The animal habitats are close to the viewing areas, so you can really see them well. The also have beautiful botanical gardens that are worth seeing. The price is reasonable and it's a great outing for kids. Afternoons are usually less crowded than the mornings, beacause a lot of schools are on field trips there in the mornings.

Riverbanks is one of the best places to spend a Sunday in Columbia. It is located in the perfect spot along the river, and has really developed over the last 10 years. It has grown from a small zoo with a few diseased monkeys to one of the most respected research zoos in the US. They receive a large number of grants and regularly get some of the best animals in zoo exchange programs from around the world. Many of their exhibits are interactive and let you do things such as feed the birds and giraffes and play with the bears. Make sure not to miss the twice daily sea otter show and the Gorilla exhibit, which has an amazing glass wall enclosure that lets you get right up to the gorillas.

Easily walkable and they keep adding new animals and attractions. The gorillas and pelicans there are really fascinating to watch . A must see for couples with kids.

This is a great zoo.We all really love it.My son who is 4yrs never tires going there. The exhibits are interesting. They keep updating the zoo with a lot of seasonal activities. There are a couple of rides for kids like a carousel. When we went there this summer they had a theatre playing a 3d movie on bugs.It was real good.We live in charlotte and it is not a very long drive from here.

PROS: a fun day trip
CONS: admissions fee a bit on the higher side

I ended up taking my brother here the week before Halloween for Boo at the Zoo. It was a good experience for him as he got to go trick or treat and go on a haunted trail. This was my first time here and it looked to be in good condition. My only complaint was that going so late at night brought the wrath of the mosquitos upon me, so be weary of that and plan accordingly.

What a great place to take the family. The zoo is always well-kept and very clean. My favorite part is definitely the elephants. The botanical gardens are really nice too. And, if the weather isn't too hot, I highly suggest walking up to the botanical gardens.

The Christmas time Winter Wonderland w/ lights is pretty good too. Nice and festive.

I definitely suggest getting an annual pass, especially for out of town guests.

river banks zoo is a very good zoo, I have been there many times, I like the tropical area most because they have really big aligators and snakes in glass room, they have penguins, but very small ones, you can apply for yearly membership for about 35 dollars, to admit two adults and as many children as you can! this is a very good zoo, with most of the seldom to see animals, except PANDA!

I love, love, love Riverbanks Zoo. I have been countless times with my family members and always have a great time. My 4 year old nephew never tires of it. Make sure you take the tram to the Gardens, it'll add to the adventure for your kids. The prices are kind of high for a one day trip, but if you live near the Columbia area, the family year long memberships are well worth the price.

This isn't the greatest zoo in the world (alot better than Waccatee in Myrtle Beach), but it's fairly decent.

Admission prices are fair, and the grounds are large. Many interesting exhibits. I particuarly like the rainforest exhibit. None of the animals in there are behind cages (but somehow they know to stay in their areas and not fly away). Every 15 mins or so, there is an actual rain shower and it gets very humid in there and it lets you see what it feels like to be in a rain forest.

Very highly reccomended. Worth the trip to Columbia. While there, take a walk down by the river and have a picnic

Everytime we go to Riverbanks we have a wonderful time. It is always clean and well kept. The animals are kept in nice environments and appear well taken care of. Staff in knowledgable and helpful. We are Society members and they have several behind the scenes tours each year and you can see how much effort goes into running a zoo, and how much pride the people have in their jobs. Great holiday programs like Boo at the Zoo for Halloween and the somewhat legendary Lights Before Christmas which never fail to take my breath away. Wonderul variety of animals. It will amaze and entertain kids and adults alike. I am proud to live in a city with such a great attraction.

PROS: variety of animals, helpful staff, beautiful garden

The Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is a wonderful place to visit. They offer so much to do that you will definitely need at least two visits to enjoy it all. They are always adding animals to their display and you can get up close and personal with quite a few of them. You can feed the birds or the giraffes. There are plenty of places for you to refresh your thirst or satisfy your hunger. It is truly the place to bring your children and your entire family. It is reasonably priced and well worth it. You must experience the Lights Before Christmas. It's a sight to behold.

Riverbanks is a great zoo to visit. We've lived all over and I can honestly say that Riverbanks is one of the cleanest we've gone to. We liked it so much we bought a membership this year. They have a nice botanical garden area and a tram that takes you between the gardens and zoo. They also have homeschool Monday's in the fall - spring and have excellent programs for homeschoolers ($7 fee each time and parent is free). They seem to be updating a lot and everything is kept in good order. They have a carasuel and other small kiddie things to do to. Also pony rides. The zoo is quite an adventure! Parking is easy and you can park on either side.

PROS: clean zoo
CONS: none

I love this place. They have a lot of hands on activities with the animals. The zoo isn't too big where you cannot see it all in one day. The botanical gardens are beautiful, a great wedding spot

Riverbanks is a great zoo to take the kids to and enjoy a day out. They have remodeled so much of the zoo and made it so much nicer. There is a huge area with gorillas that is awesome. Usually the gorillas are right there looking at you while you watch them. It is cool. The zoo is laid out really well, taking you to different areas that represent different countries of the world.

At Halloween there is something called Boo at the Zoo for the kids. At Christmas they have lights up around the zoo and snow blowing. It is really nice. There are also other events held throughout the year here.

You will truly enjoy your visit.
