If you are looking for architecture books either for a class or just because you are interested in the subject, this is a great place to visit. The staff is really professional and knows their stuff. If you are looking for something specific, they are an excellent resource. They are also friendly enough to let you browse around for as long as you want.

The Housing Works Thrift Shop is a good place to get some really cheap paperbacks and CDs. Some of the staff is friendly but some are really rather rude which is sad to report in a non profit. They have a cafe area and the coffee isn't bad. The good books and CDs get picked out quickly and they get donations all the time so it is worthwhile to drop in from time to time to see what is new.

Not only is this bookstore a great space, your money goes to a good cause. The books are all donated and the revenue goes to helping homeless people with AIDs find housing. There is a great selection and a lot of space to browse and lounge. The food is delicious and the staff, who are mostly volunteers, is friendly and helpful. Most of the books are under $10 so it is a great place to find those old favorites you have been hoping to snatch up. It also sells CDs and records.

Sure, you've been to plenty of cool independent bookstores, but have you been to a non-profit one? If not it's time to boost your cred and head to Housing Works bookstore in Soho. It has an amazing library setup with shelves and shelves of used books, spiral staircases, and a raised ceiling. Easily the best used bookstore I've been to, and all of the proceeds go to the Housing Works foundation, which helps homeless AIDS and HIV sufferes in NYC.
