Reviews for Hammerstein Ballroom

Ratings_icons Cool place to see a show!

One of my favorite music venues in the whole city. I recommend that next time you are going to see a show only accept the best. The acoustics are really wonderful. The Hammerstein Ballroom is two floors and I would go to the second floor to get better acoustics. Also $2 PBRs.

Ratings_icons One of the best general admission venues

Hammerstein Ballroom is the venue the bands go right after they've outgrown small clubs, but before they're famous enough to sell out the nearby Madison Square Garden. It's close to the size to a more upscale (but terrible) Beacon Theater, except that there is no seating on the floor. It has hosted acts as diverse as Nelly Furtado and Marilyn Manson, PJ Harvey and a Russian rock festival.

For people who hate general admission floors with their moshing crowds, there are several general admission levels with seats. Tickets usually cost the same no matter whether you're standing or sitting, but make sure you specify which one you want when you are buying the tickets: if your ticket says the floor, you won't be allowed to go sit down, and vice versa.

PROS: General admission seating, great acts, great acoustics
CONS: Can't sit down with floor tickets or go to the floor with seat tickets

Ratings_icons Hammerstein Ballroom is smaller than Madison Sq. Garden, but a good concert place

Hammerstein Ballroom holds approx. 3,000 people for concerts. I saw Tori Amos in concert there. It is a very intimate theatre: not the most comfortable, but due to it's size, we could see the stage very well. Drink and eat before the show starts. They are very strict about eating and drinking in your seats. Hammerstein is also available for party, corporate rental. Check website for details.

This is a big musical venue right on the tip of downton Manhattan. It fits about 2,000 people, and has like five tiers of balconies. It has awesome prewar architecture with huge columns and frescos and such. It plays host to a wide variety of functions and acts, but you'll most likely end up there for a concert. I saw Cake and Northern State play a show there in October, and it was awesome. Huge sound, though you'll want to show up a a few hours in advance to get close to the stage. There's also been some gang activity as of late unfortunately, with several high profile shootings, so you'll want to be careful. Also, no pulbic water fountains, so be prepared to spend four bucks on a bottle of poland spring water, because they search you good.
