The best burgers! I have been going here since I was 15. Also, a real place for real people. Affordable, often hilarious service.

This place looks kind of like one of those rowdy sports bars, but once you go inside, you feel better.
I got a cheeseburger and fries - both were so plentiful, I didn't finish either. I definitely got my money's worth. It costed me a bit less than ten bucks. Around eight.
The burger meat wasn't too seasoned, but that is how I like it. It was extremely juicy. It was so tender, you wouldn't need a knife to cut it. A fork would suffice. I didn't expect less than three dollars' worth of french fries to be so much! When they brought me the huge platter of it, I was pretty floored.
My friend got a lemonade and she said it was really good.
I got my money's worth, the food was good, and I left extremely full. Easily five stars.

They don't mess around here. Burgers here are super big and juicy. If you are on diet, this is not the joint for you. If you are looking for a high maintenance burger, this aint the right spot for you either.

Be prepared to roll up your sleeves and chow down the messy burger at hand. You are certainly going to be full and happy after eating.

...so they keep going to the Shake Shack. Hands down the best burger in New York. My biggest fear everytime I walk in is that the secret will finally be out and I'll find the tiny place packed to the gills and I'll have to wait for a table (hasn't happened yet in 7 years of going there). Burgers: juicy, seasoned to perfection and delicious. Toppings plentiful. Worried that your turkey burger will be dry and mealy like so many other places, but trying to watch your red meat intake? Fear not! Vegetable patties also available. Paul's does not discriminate, they just want to serve you the most delicious burger you've ever had.

It's also a must for out of towners looking for that "authentic" NYC experience. Greasy spoon atmosphere, sassy but charming waitress, rocky tables.... check, check, and check.

Pros: BURGERS!

.

1. You order the burger over the phone.
2. The burger arrives, lugged by a nice deliveryman.
3. You notice how the bun is frustratingly soggy.
4. You bite, then, into the burger.
5. The burger soothes all of your worries.
6. The burger turns on the TV.
7. You watch basketball.

I went to Paul?s Place a couple weeks ago after hearing/reading many good reviews and was hugely disappointed. The burger bun got too moist and ?what?s worse- gooey in a matter of minutes. The ground beef was bland because it had no salt on it. The paper-thin slice of Swiss was bland as well (domestic, most likely). The pickles were so old they were way too soft and had a weird smell and slightly bitter aftertaste. Even the lemon wedge that came with my soda was old and smelly?

I have had my share of bad burgers but this is NOT the case with Paul's. I usually stop here whenever my kids visit me from out of state and want a cheeseburger. I have to admit I wouldn't dine inside only because it is a little cramp to dine in but that is the only negative thing I can say about the place. Put a tip in the tip jar and hear them honk the horn. My girlfriend and I usually order to go and then walk down St. Marks from the East Village to the West Village. For Manhattan, the prices are reasonable and the burgers are big (granted not as big as Jackson Hole). You can't go wrong with this place.

I love burgers. I've eaten burgers at every self-professed "best burgers" joint. I can honestly say that without a doubt, Paul's burger was the best I've ever had. The only other place that comes close is Lou's Lunch in New Haven. I got an English burger - just a plain old burger with cheese on an English muffin. It didn't need a thing. The taste of the meat was amazing. I'm surprised they didn't have a cow carcass in the back room (or maybe they did - hey it's the East Village!) because the meat tasted so fresh. And yes, the burgers are going to be bigger than the bun (plain old Wonder bread buns) but who wouldn't want a bigger burger??? I would totally recommend the English muffin because it's kinda crispy and doesn't get soggy with all that greasy meaty burger juice. We didn't get any fries or anything because we wanted to stuff ourselves with that damn tasty burger... but we did get a vanilla egg cream to drink that was pretty awesome. The decor is something you'd expect from the area - no frills, but still pretty cool - old neon space design on the black ceiling, diner style tables and chairs, standard lunch counter, etc. A small place but who really cares - I'd eat one of their burgers standing on my head on the street corner and it would still have a smile on my face. Worth the trip from anywhere. If you love burgers like I do, you have to go... just be forewarned - you'll never want a burger from anywhere else once you try Paul's.

I went to Paul's Burger Joint last Saturday with my boyfriend, after Self's Workout in the Park. Lol. But we were deciding on Dallas BBQ across the street or Paul's but we were tired of eating chicken at home. Best decision ever made. I had a Cheese Burger Deluxe sub. Sweet Potato fries and Boyfriend had Soul Burger Deluxe. OMG that first ever lovin' bite just melted in my mouth. It was juicy, no gristle and very very lean. After trying to fit that last bite, I was so full i skipped dinner. The prices are pretty decent for something so excellent. I recommend that you MUST have breakfast first or have some serious munchies.

PAUL'S BURGER JOINT ROCK!!!!

I've had the great fortune of ordering the East Sider Deluxe (Gigantic burger with heaps of bacon, cheese, mushrooms, sauteed onions, tomato, raw onions, and lettuce.. with mounds of crispy fries on the side) last night and loved it from the first bite to the last greasy crumb. This is coming from a guy who loves red meat and has tasted many different burgers from numerous places around the city (and we're not talking McDonalds here) and Paul's burgers are the best I've had by far. It's not even a contest. And we're talking delivery here. I'm sure the burgers are even more spectacular right off the grill. Now some of the others commented that the buns are a bit small and I agree with that, but that's what makes the whole eating experience so much more enjoyable. And why even bother with utensils? We're talking burgers here people.... so forget the fork and knife... Get your bottle of ketchup ready, roll your sleeves up, grab that monster by the sides, and dig in. That's how I like to enjoy my burger and that's how I enjoyed it last night. So to all you lucky people that get to eat at Paul's or order from there.. bon appetite.

Cons: Can't deliver uptown

There's really no reason to come here if you're not having a burger. Cheap, low maintenance, quick and easy.

No matter how many fancy restaurants open up, just admit it, at heart, we're all burger loving slobs.

I have a Paul's Burger. It can't be beat. If red meat kills, allow me to help you pick out my casket. As long as Paul's is around, I'm not going strict veg anytime too soon. There's a (one single) guy behind the counter when I go there "the morning after." I'm not sure if it's Paul but whoever this guy is, whoa! If you're reading this, you should work nights because the guys on the grill in the evening aren?t really measuring up.

Pros: Burgers! Only a Krusty Burger would be better.

Cons: Getting in and out. Twister anyone?

My first bite into this bacon cheddar cheese burgers was a burst of beefy juice flavor, I ordered medium rare (pink center) but it came to be a medium (no pink) which i thought wasn't cool but it was still awesome regardless. This place would have easily been a 5 star by me if i didn't order the onion rings which were $3.20 dollars for a hefty plate of frozen pathmark onion rings which were just re-fried in the frier. The waitress there was very nice and was great until one of the kitchen hands brought out our drink of boylan's root beer when we asked for stewarts, after stating the fact that he had gotten the wrong one. My gf and i had then come to understand that he spoke nothing more than yes and no of the english language; frustrating. GREAT BURGERS ! not so great onion rings i warn you don't get it. i honestly thought they'd be homemade but i thought wrong. ONION RINGS NOT GREAT.

Paul's has got to be the best burgers in NYC! Visited last sunday for lunch. The burgers are huge and fresh and juicy as can be! I recommend the sweet potato fries! Plus our waitress was a breath of fresh air...SO nice and prompt and seemed to actually like her job...something you rarely find! The place is small, but that's what makes it what it is.

without first mentally preparing myself. i go by myself (it's always hard to find a nice place to eat alone) order a St. Mark's burger, and watch whatever sporting event they have one TV.

I've never been bothered yet, and even though it's a cheap ($10 including tip for a deluxe burger, fries, and a freely refilled coke) place I like it the best.

PROS: eat here alone
CONS: far from the train.

just go...killer burgers, awesome atmosphere!!! the place is small...so what, this is nyc baby, not frikin' texas! the buns are smaller than the burger...so what i'd rather pay to have more meat than bread, which cost pennies to make and it's just a filler anyway! no fillers needed for these half-pound burger beauties! they really go down smooth, no heavy feeling like with other burgers. bottom line, this place is a bargain and it's stupidly delicious!!!

So if you're ever craving half a pound of thick, juicy beef, Paul's is your place. I agree with previous comments that the buns are perhaps a little small, but you can always whip out a knife and fork and find a way to make it work... or just deal and get a little messy. The burgers don't make you feel like you're going to die later either, which I found to be a plus (no guarantees if that holds up with cheese and bacon and etc. added). The chocolate shake is fantastically rich and overall, great experience, even if it isn't the nicest interior. Also, if you want some killer fries afterwards, Pommes Frites is just a half a block down 2nd...

Some of the best and biggest burgers in the city! Paul's really is an experience. One burger is more than enough. You might even go home with leftovers. These thick, juicy burgers are cooked on a grill behind the couter - and there is a bowls of amazing pickles on every table. The milkshakes are nice and thick also. Try it - but only go if you're HUNGRY.

This place serves one of the better burgers I've ever had. The burgers are bigger than at other places and the beef was juicy. It's kind of strange that they charge extra for lettuce and tomatoes, but it still turns out being around 5$ a burger; not a bad deal at all considering the quality of the burger.

Pros: Melt-in-your-mouth, Inexpensive, Enormous

Paul's is really worth a visit. A high-quality old New York hamburger joint. The service was fine - really sweet, pleasant guys despite huge crowding. Burger also fine. I don't think the quality of the burger quite measures up to J.G. Melon or that place in the West Village that's always rated 'best burger,' and I do think Paul is scrimping on the bun quality and on the American cheese quality and on the fries quality (altho I did not try the shoestring fries which I probably would have preferred) - but the meat was wholesome and good - and I'm probably way pickier than most people about burgermeat. Historical kind of a place, great atmosphere, all the ambience you are looking for in a lower second avenue hamburger joint in New York City. For people from other parts of the country/world this is a real trip back in time.

Gym friends from out of town requested lean protein in the form of beef- couldnt wait to take them to Paul's. Sure, its not grilled chicken breast, but these burgers are top notch without the Fast Food poisons. Seemed like other weightlifters had the same idea- we were not the only ones in there. We preferred to gaze at our burgers while avoiding having to look at the wait staff, but no complaints.

Pros: INEXPENSIVE, COLORFUL, RELAXING

BIG home made burgers for practially the same price as Mickey D's. Lots of choices to add on. Opt for a kaiser roll ($ .25 extra). The burger is just too big for a standard bun. Also, we always pig out on the pickles they have sitting on all their tables. One small complaint, onion rings are pre fab frozen, so they were a small let down otherwise a great place for a quick bite.

I went to try Paul's palace last weekend cuz I heard a lot of good things about it. The food was good, but the service sucked soooooo badly. I know the place was busy and all I didn't wanna hear the waiter cursing before he took our order.

I visit the U.S. quite often, and I am always looking for a great place to eat whenever I go. This time I was in the mood for Hamburgers. Since I was here for a week, I utilized CitySearch and tried all of the Editorial Nominees. Without a doubt, Paul's Palace was by far the best hamburger I have ever tasted. The service was very friendly, and the gizmos and toys added to the delightful colour of the place. I would give Donovon's Pub an honorable mention. Their hamburger's were quite good also, but not on par with Paul's Palace. Good Show, Yanks! I will certainly eat here when I return.

I've been eating at Pauls for the last 11 years and it is by far the best Burger in New York City! I've tried the other burgers at most of the top 10 spots on this list, and not one, (NOT ONE!) beats the Burgers at Pauls. These Burgers Freaken ROCK! Period! Now go and try one for yourself, and you better be hungry, cause Paul's ain't for dieters, light eaters, and vegetarians!

I live a few blocks from Paul's, and I go there at least a few times a week. The burgers are big and juicy, and they give you a lot of steak fries with the deluxe. I'd say I've been there in an upwards of 100 times, and the food has tasted good every time. I don't usually dine in though, so I wouldn't know about the experience.
