This is the first time I have ever had such a bad experience that I just had to post a comment. The beginning of the night was ok I guess, but when it came time to leave I used my credit card to pay the tab. I gave the waitress a 5.00$ tip which was just an ok tip, however the waitress, Actually came up to me a called me very rude for only a 5.00 tip. Then when she posted to my account (after making the comment) she posted an extra 10.00 for herself. I found this out the next day when looking at my purchase's. So here was the final 77.00 plus 5.00 was 83.00 she ran my card for 93.00 and some change . I have kept all these receipts, I do believe this is illegal and am currently looking into it. Bottom Line I will never go back and if you want to keep your money you should not go either.

It??s always a good sign when an Irish Pub has Irish patrons. Better yet, Irish owners. The Owl ??n?? Thistle, tucked under First Avenue in a historic brick building, has a working class feel and sometimes, a working class crowd. Read: get your drink on without being judged. The drinks are strong but not overdone and they (like most Irish pubs) claim to pour the best Guinness in town. They actually might. In addition to the generous drinks and authentic accents, they have tasty traditional Irish grub like Shepherd??s pie and soda bread. It??s like having St Patrick??s Day all year round.

This is my 2nd favorite Seattle Irish bar. I love the music and often go and sit in the bar area and sing along with the songs. Something about Irish music just makes you happy, even though some of it is pretty depressing. This is a large establishment, but it is often filled up especially on St Patricks Day. Its location does make it a nice meeting spot for those going on or off a ferry. The food is good, I often enjoy the hummus. They also have pool tables. I do find the bathroom a bit strange as it is in a seperate hall and you can't take your drinks with you, not good for those people who are afraid of stuff being put in their drinks. The slanted front entry can also be dangerous for drunk people.

Out of all the Irish bars in Seattle this is definitely my favorite! It's got a kick-ass atmosphere and it's just plain fun. It's good for groups as well as coming with just a friend.

Sometimes there's a cover charge, sometimes there's not. Sometimes there's a live band, sometimes there's not. Sometimes the music is so loud you can't hear your friends, sometimes it's not. It's kind of a hit or miss, but i love those nights when you've got a good group, there's no cover charge, and the music is not overly loud. We usually hang out by the pool table, as the bar tends to be a bit louder.

The bartenders are usually cool, and once when we did a fake-bachelorette party here, my friend who was good friends with one of the bartenders paid him to strip for us... and he actually did it (down to his boxers). We were all rolling over with laughter, it was pretty funny! Now how many bars can you say that about???

This place is super chill and great to hang out in.

Parking is typically horrible in this neighborhood and sometimes weirdos are hanging out in the alley. Stay clear of the weirdos!

I thoroughly enjoy this pub. It can get a little loud when they have a band playing, but it's usually an Irish band, so at least it fits the theme. The atmosphere in the Pub is that of a library or a reading room in an old Irish building. It has a very laid back feel and the food is excellent. My favorite item is the Fried Brie, I highly recommend it. The Owl'N Thistle is a place I like to take my friends when they visit from out of town to give them a feel of some of the unique and quirky places Seattle has to offer.

First thing I want to say is that I enjoying drinking quite a bit :-) ... but I hate to admit the waitresses do get incredibly drunk. Good during the day but catch them at night, they are all lit up. I haven't been in in awhile but hasn't changed in over 5 years....Hey Amy---know when to say when.

I am an Irishman who frequents many of the 52 Irish Pubs in King County, (Compiling a book eventually) and I simply do not understand the negative reviews that I have read about Owl & Thistle. I've been there atleast 20 times in 3 years and have NEVER witnessed any of the things I read of in these reviews. The Staff have always gotten to me in a timely manner, the food is just as good as name brand restaurants and the music is fun and lively. There is even a Stump The Band Challenge I won and the Band bought a round for the house. (Find that in any other Bar!!!) If you don't like REAL Irish Pubs then I guess it's because you're not Irish or you simply wanna act like you're irish. Whatever, I could name numerous Bars, Pubs, taverns and Lounges that are way worse than Owl & Thistle. I will continue going and enjoying being Irish. thank You very much. Erin go Bragh!!!

I just read the reviews of the "Owl" here on City Search and I am bewildered at the negative comments. As a professional musician who has spent the last 35 years performing and frequenting Clubs and bars all over America I count the Owl as one of my favorites. I am left to believe that some comments are posted by competition of the bar. The owner in a bad mood all the time???......I have NEVER seen this man have a bad day. The food is good the service is friendly and the atmosphere is camp. I have never posted anything anywhere before but after reading some of these reviews I felt like I should state my opinion.

Cons: none

I personally love the O"n"T. I agree with the review that you have to know what you want to get the full experience of the owl. The music is always good and its so hard to find a good place downtown to shoot some pool while sippin your guinness. And there is free pool on Mondays, an added bonus! The owl is my favorite bar in Seattle and I highly reccommend checking it out.

As far as Irish bars go in Seattle and surrounding areas, the Owl & Thistle is tops. This place is legit. From the exposed brick to the Irishman at the end of the the bar with a Harp talking politics with another customer everything about this place is exactly what an Irish pub should be.

Came in with my Dad, a man born and raised in South London, for the fish & chips(by far my favorite item on the menu). He swears they are the best he's ever had, better even than those served at his friend's bar in Santa Monica. Quite an endorsement!

After dinner the the Dusty 45s played an amazing show. The postage-stamp-sized dance floor was packing people in to within feet of the band. The room pulsed like an ant pile that had just been runover by a lawn mower.

If you're looking for a come as you are place to have a good time, look no further.

Staff is a mess. The bartender on friday day shift is more concerned about her friend than the customer's. The owner seems annoyed all the time. The wait staff FORGET IT. I went in ONCE, and will not go back. It took 20 minutes to get a damn beer and I Was sitting at the bar!

The Owl has been the place for Irish pub fans for years. It is not as dingy as some have said. I have always had decent service from the bartenders but pathetic service with the servers. Oddly enough, I have less fun the more people show up. There is a weird identity crisis with the random layout that seems to rub off on the patrons that gets worse as it fills up. The best is hanging out with a few random people at the bar after work and the worst is putting up with people who think they are cool for hanging out there all the time.

Pros: Beer and fun

Cons: Beer and boredom

I'm not sure why some people like this place - it's a cesspool - It reeks of bile & urine, and if that's a signature of and authentic Irish Pub, then NO THANKS. The service is pretty bad in there (wait 10-15 minutes on beer), and the food was far, far less than stellar - McD's has better food. I counted 3 items on the menu that are true Irish dish, the rest was just your normal American Pub Food.

I've been there twice, several months apart and it was the same experience - same stench, same service, same food.

If you want a good, clean Irish Pub with good Irish food, complete with Irish employees, go to Paddy Coynes.

Pros: Nothing

Yes, this place has terrible service, but has anyone else noticed that the staff if on their lips halfway through the night? Could this possibly be the reason it takes 20 minutes to get a beer? Or that when your beer does arrive, it's wrong? This past Saturday was a joke, not only were the waitresses just plowed, the bartender in the back was rude and totally not holding the shots they kept trying to "sneak". But I guess that's what you can expect since the owner was clearly intoxicated as well. So sad, this place was great a couple years ago when we all first started going. It's gone down hill and fast. I would also have to agree with the "if you're a regular, you'll get service" quote from an earlier post. I guess that's what the owners and staff want. Just hope they make all their money on St. Patrick's Day. They wont be getting anymore of ours' (money that is).

Pros: Music

Cons: Everything else.

After reading the reviews and frequenting the bar many times, I had yet to receive horrible service. That was until this past weekend.
After a horrible night (good music I will always state that) of just plain weirdness with the staff and management, my girlfriend and I decided to go grab a bite. After a perfect ending to a imperfect night, we headed home. While walking to our Condo on the hill, we noticed an employee (a couple actually) and the owner near our place seeming to scuffle a might bit. Needless to say, I can surmise the reason everyone has their job still at this place is because they all seem a bit too close for employer/employee relations.
That being said, you can bet cold hard earned cash, this bar will never see a penny from either of us or our friends/family.

Pros: Always a Good Band

Cons: The Music isn't enough to save the service.

My husband and I were attacked by "a regular" in this establishment last night. It was a Monday and our day off so we decided to go out to have a few shots and play some pool. We have been coming to the Owl and thistle for three years now. It's not the nicest place but the staff knows our names and they are nice to us. This guy at the bar starts calling me the b-word and just being really mean to me for no reason. I thought talking to people and socializing is ok when drinking at a bar. So, my husband and I decide to leave. I left and then realized I didn't have my sweater, which is still missing. We walk inside to look around and the guy attacks my husband, rips his shirt and then we get kicked out. WHAT? Standard practice when there has been a fight is to kick both parties out. He is still sitting at the bar, drinking his beer? We were treated terribly. We were treated like we had attacked him. Ridiculous. I will never give another dime to these people. I no longer feel safe in The Owl and Thistle. This drunk guy should have been cut off a long time ago. Instead, WE were disrespected, I was called names, my husband was attacked and thrown to the ground, the drunk guy ripped his shirt, I was unable to get my belongings and then we were kicked out with no support from the employees who I thought would see the situation fairly. Terrible experience, I don't recommend anyone going to this bar. If you do, watch your back.

The thing you must understand about the Owl & Thistle is that this a dingy pub, NOT a swanky hotel lounge and patrons like it that way. They are not trying to impress you and your Mother-In-Law. No one will greet you at the door with a nosegay of pansies. The people who go here know how to navigate the scene. The music is the draw. Know what you are looking for and you will be rewarded. The crowd is friendly and engaging ...as long as you are not shaking like a Chihuahua.

Pros: hip hangout, the music is often great

We took a chance and went there, even after reading the reviews on this site. We were optimistic but what a let down.
I will have to agree with everyone's impression of the staff for the most part. Being a bar owner myself, I would never allow the type of behaviors shown by the staff as were shown to my wife and I. The waitress, less than enthusiastic. I get having a drink after work, but to let your staff get totaled and act they way she was, it's inexcusable. We had high hopes, just moving to town. We will most assuredly not be going back to this place.

It's my very irish husband's birthday this weekend and I was searching through reviews to locate the perfect venue for our brewd, but honestly after reading all of these reviews, I am at a loss. O+T looks like a great venue for the fun we are antisipating.... but I am a little weary of the infamous Holly along with the other careless waitstaff. I am suprised that management hasn't taken any of these reports into consideration, owning your own business is a risk of sorts, and the public eyes is everything when you dont have any other means of advertising. Good luck.

I've never had the food here before but everytime I've gone for music and drinks, have had an amazing time here. My sister and I were coming in from out of town and wanted to find a bar exactly like the Irish pub we are used to going to in Telluride and found a great match at this place. The music is always great and people in the bar have always been friendly to us, and it's not prententious at all. Love this place!!!

My friends and I decide to go in for drinks after work, and get some snaky foods. The bartendress was the biggest Meany I've ever encountered. Apparently if you aren't a man or look like one, you get horrible service. The food was good when we got it, but it took forever. And everyone seemed like it was a chore to take our orders. One of the girls with me was the one who suggested the place, within 15 minutes, she was apologizing over and over again. I've been there before on the weekends and honestly, the service then is deplorable at best as well, but the music is so good it makes some of the hassle worthwhile. I'm really just over the fence about the bartender, haggard at best. I'm just wondering how this place is doing so well when it seems like the general consensus on city search is the horrible staff. I also noticed the bar has a myspace page, and believe it or not, the person in charge of the page, actually put the main body of the editorial review on the page. I would think twice about broadcasting the pub via city search, unless they want everyone to know how horrible the staff is, and that brings another thing to mind, WHY are they all still employed if the owners read the reviews????? Take note, better people, better bar.

Take note, better people, better bar.

Pros: The Music.

Cons: ................

.

I would have to agree with the consensus so far. The staff is too concerned with the people they apparently know to pay attention to the general crowd. The front bar was very crowded. the wait staff seemed overwhelmed and in poor moods all around. The back bar, just a serious waste of time. Not to mention the man woman who pretty much took up residency and made even attempting to order a chore.I've heard good things, musically and drink wise about the place, after last night, I wont be going back and I will never recommend it to anyone I know.

Pros: The Band was Good

Cons: Everything else about the place.

I recently frequented the Owl n Thistle and thought the service was wonderful. The bar staff was great and the waitresses were and are always freindly.

The worst experience I've had at a restaurant in years. My wife and I thought we would grab some happy hour food and drink before heading to The Triple Door (best venue in Seattle by the way) so we stopped by The Owl&Thistle. Big Mistake. At 5:20 we seated ourselves at a dirty table in the mostly empty pool room and began the wait. A waitress appeared bringing beers to the table next to us. The people sitting at the table were confused and informed her that they didn't order these beers. She just put them on the table and said, "well, these are on me". I thought she would come by and take our order, but for that we waited 20min. After ten minutes I told a server that I was concerned no-one knew we were there, without looking up she said someone would come by. Finally Amy stopped by & apologized for the wait on our Stoli and Mac&Jacks. We informed her that we did not order those, in fact we hadn't ordered yet. I gave our drink order and told her we would want the fish & chips, burger, & curry chips off the happy hour menu. She looked at me and said "it's WAY past happy hour". I told her that it was only 5:40. I showed her the time and I told her we had been waiting since 5:20 and would expect that they honor the happy hour prices. She agreed to "make an exception". 10min later we had no drinks & our table was a mess & the table next to us had received another round of drinks they had not ordered. She finally brought us drinks (not what we had ordered, but at this point we just wanted to get some food and get out of there). I had to wash our own table. The food might have been good if it wasn?t all cold. She did finally bring out the drinks we ordered, but to the wrong table so we never got them. I asked to pay my bill so Amy came over and gave us a bill for drinks we did not order and no food. I told her this wasn?t our bill, but she didn't care. Since it was less than ours I just paid it and left, never to return again.

I've worked in the industry before, I know good service, and the service I get from the staff at the owl is awesome. Abbey knows how to make the best Black Velvet (turned me on to them actually). Anytime I've been in there it's been a great time. I like to go in during the days on Friday, Abbey knows how to have a good time while working and makes sure everyone is served promptly and with a fantastic smile!

Pros: Amazing Staff!

Cons: I don't get there often enough.

.

Horrible service. Lackadaisical staff. I spent most of the night listening to them talking back and forth about their own personal BS. The back bar was not crowded but you would think the girl working it was running a marathon. I was also very confused when as the night drew on, it seemed this Irish pub no where near Capitol Hill turned into a lesbian haven. If I want to see that type of action, I'd rent it.

Pros: Can't think of a one at the moment

Cons: crowd type not what you would expect near the waterfront or downtown.

We've heard nothing but great things about O&T (except the "bitchiest waitress ever" review) so we decided to check it out. After getting nothing but attitude and resistance from our waitress, we check our bill for a name...HOLLY!!! She single-handedly ruined O&T for us forever, which is too bad because the venue has fantastic potential. Note to managment: get a new server!

Pros: Sheps Pie & Atmosphere

Awful food (unfortunately, I am learning that this is the norm in Seattle), boring enviroment, and beer that tasted as though the lines hadn't been cleaned for at least a year or two.

This is my first post and I have to talk about my favorite irish pub the Owl and Thistle. I love the Owl and Thistle! I go there every Monday and Friday night after work and I love the atmosphere and the service that I get. I know many of the employees there and I think they are all nice and willing to go the extra mile to make you happy. I recently celebrated a birthday there and was treated like a king. The cheeseburgers are really good and so is the cider and the whiskey. I drink and eat them both liberally so I know! It is probably my favorite place to go in the whole city. My favorite waitress is Amy and my favorite bartender is AJ, both of these great people will make your day a better one with their great service and kind words. The kitchen really works hard too. Those guys will always do their best to make your cheeseburgers and other menu items as good as they can be. Everyone that I know at the Owl really cares about making your experience a great one. Stop by today!

Cons: Can get packed on Friday's when I go. You can always get your drinks though!

We've gone to Owl and Thistle many times over the past year since we live nearby, usually with decent experiences. Love the bands, love the Shepherd's Pie. But tonight... oh my... tonight was something else. We went there at 6:20 p.m. and sat in the front room. It was relatively crowded, but not insane. We sat at an empty table. The waitress, Holly, according to what was printed on the bill, came by in a reasonable amount of time and took our drink order. The beers came out quickly and we asked for a menu. Time passes..... more time passess.... more time passes.... She's serving others around the room and we think, no big deal, it's a little busy. We grab a menu off another table and choose what we want off the 3-7 pm happy hour. We finally flag down our waitress at 6:50 p.m., although we've been ready to order for the past 25 minutes and order items off the happy hour menu. When the bill comes, they're full price. I get up from the table and point out that we'd ordered off the happy hour menu. She says, "Our happy hour is 3-7 and we go off of bar time." I say, "but we ordered before 7 and we waited almost half and hour for you to take the order." She gives me a little smile and says, "we were really busy." I say, "I realize that, but we ordered before 7." She says, "I'll take care of it." When she drops off our bill she delivers the following gem: "If you come in for happy hour again, just remember that the portions aren't going to be that big." Unfortunately, this little incident really soured our affection for Owl and Thistle. It's usually a great place, but we'd think very seriously about returning after this kind of treatment.

Pros: Good bands, good pub food

Cons: Spotty service, sometimes ok, sometimes horrific

I went to the Owl and Thistle for happy hour after work on a Friday. It was a pretty cool bar, but it was PACKED and there were only two waitresses for the whole place. Their service was good, but they weren't able to take our orders for 15 minutes after we sat down, and then when we finally got menus it took another 20 before we were able to place an order, and we were able to get beers semi-quickly, but our food took almost an hour. it was ridiculous. Good place, good staff, but they need more staff to make it worthwhile. Maybe I just went on a night where some servers called in sick or something.

i've never been to ireland, so i don't know how irish this bar is. what i do know is that they host a lot of good bands with irish flare. i also enjoy the exposed brick, below the street line, subterranean feel of the place.

There might be some people from Ireland
working here but I've been disappointed
by the Owl N'Thistle. If you are looking
for Irish, its not here. Has the feel of
a corner Seattle bar, certainly not an
Irish pub.

Nice cozy place with no cover. great mix of live bands. check out the Vinyl Avengers on wed nights. Rockabilly featuring the lead singer of the Dusty 45's.
The servers are cute and smart and way overworked. Cut 'em a break and you'll fall in love. the bartenders are hot. Best fish and chips in Seattle. Same goes for the shepards pie.

The 'Owl is one of the more popular places to hang out for downtownies when waiting for a bus/ferry. The happy hour is great, although the fish n chips have gone down hill some (Too much breading and they are not as big as they once were). The Hummus is wonderful, but they dont make enough to keep up with the demand and the last 2 times I've gone down there, I've gotten screwed! You'd think they would get a clue! Oh Well. Good selection of English/Irish beer. **It does get smokey in there & guys usually bring stinky cigars to puff away on.. so BEWARE!**

The have the best fish n' chips I've had, period. The happy hour special is the best deal in town. The fries certainly hold their own as well. I'd give my left pinky if they opened a non-smoking section, but that's not going to happen. And, of course, the staff is extra nifty too. Only drawback is parking; be prepared to circle the block a few times if you don't want to pay.

From the management to the employees - this wonderful establishment will make you feel welcome where others fail. The atmosphere - the drinks - the music and the food are everything one could hope for. There are "many" Irish "pubs" in the Seattle area - BUT there is only one OWL&THISTLE IRISH PUB.
