We were visiting Austin from Denver and had a wonderful experience at Maiko! Try the avocado tempura with the jalapeno relish - yummy!

Been on a quest for a decent sushi place for nearly three years. So far, Maiko is the winner. The rolls don't have quite the flavor, pop and presentation I'd gotten used to in my last home city, but they're pretty good.

This was the first restaurant in Austin in which I received really good service, which husband and I still find infrequently at best. An order misunderstanding on our first visit was cleared up quickly and without fuss. In general, the waitstaff is fairly knowledgeable about the menu and quick to find out answers that they don't know.

We happened in once on a Sunday and were offered a choice of seating, with bar seating being eligible for happy hour specials. The specials, by the way were great. Think it was half price off a certain list of rolls and cheap sake, though I may have that wrong.

I'm still searching for awesome sushi that makes me giggle and drool, but til I find that, Maiko is a pretty good stand in.

I work down the street from Maiko and finally visited it for the first time and last time. Upon walking in, the hostess, who was chatting with another employee didn't even look our way and took 5 minutes to acknowledge us before seating us. The reaon we went to the bar was because we read online that they had a special on Tuesdays for $1 sake bombs. We ordered our food and drinks and our waitress was decent and as helpful as she could be without knowing much about the food. The food was not special, Austin has much better sushi and Japanese fusion restaurants to offer. When the check came, we noticed we had not received the special we had initially come in for because we were seated in the wrong side of the restaurant. My friend talked to the manager and we were both incredibly disappointed in the way she reacted. She talked to us like it was our fault we did not know we had to sit 10 feet away from where we were seated to receive the special. When my friend told her we were not offered an option of seating, she said they don't ask anyone where they want to be seated. The manager, Lisa? or Linda? was curt, rude, and obviously does not care about customer satisfaction at all. We were extremely disappointed in this restaurant overall and do not understand how it received any good ratings. THERE ARE MUCH BETTER RESTAURANTS IN AUSTIN THAT HAVE HIGHER QUALITY FOOD, SERVICE, AND ATMOSPHERE.

I've been here several times, only because they are open when other sushi restaurants are not during the day and because easy access makes for easy sushi. The people aren't super friendly but they don't get much business during the day/weekday. The sushi is okay, but not as fresh as many of the good places. It's by the Belmont which is also just okay so all in all, it fits in it's place.

Christmas Party '08 was so Awesome here. If you want to have a fun company event, check out the karaoke room at Maiko! It was so much fun, we had a fantastic selection of the delectable food offerings and then sang the night away. Best X-mas party ever!

I've walked or driven by this place a thousand times, but had never gone in. There are a limited number of sushi options for lunch downtown and I thought I'd try Maiko. The service was prompt and courteous. Water was on my table and a waiter greeting me within a minute of being seated. I looked through the lunch specials and had a combo that had a spicy tuna roll and 4 pieces of nigiri. The special also came with miso soup and salad with a typical ginger dressing. The soup was great, not too much tofu, but enough. The salad was rather large for a side salad, but was great. The dressing was a familiar ginger type dressing, but a little sweeter. It was great. The sushi was amazing. It was comparable to Kenichi or Musashino. The fish was high quality and seemed to melt in my mouth. I'm not that fond of salmon typically, but the salmon here was very fresh. Additionally, there were additional pieces of sashimi that were amazing. I would highly recommend this place.

We came in to Maiko on Tuesday evening excited considering we had never been there before. We were seated and then it was downhill from there. We ordered mushroom miso, vegetable tempura and two sushi rolls all at once. The miso tasted like soy sauce. The vegetable tempura was very disappointing. It took our waitress twenty five minutes to get us our rolls. My date actually considered grabbing the rolls off the bar, where we could see them stagnating for 15 minutes. In the meantime we looked at the art on the walls that represented 90?s deco and the cheesy carpet that resembled a Las Vegas casino that is about to be demolished. The atmosphere could not par up to how much they charged for food, especially because the food was also not that impressive. We checked out the rolls under the bad lighting and we were wondering WTF the chef knew about sushi. The website boasts this great looking presentation and it is non-existent. Moving on, the orange tuna roll did not have any hint of orange, was mostly rice and the fish was not fresh. The Maiko roll was all hype also. The best part was our waitress was gone the whole time. ?no exaggerating and my date asked her where she had been, and if she had been in the back smoking a joint the whole time. Instead of being comical about it to chill out the tension, she freaked out and had an enormous attitude. She asked if we wanted to talk to her manager, getting way louder than our decibels and we just said, ?no, we just wanted to let you know we were not pleased with the service.? Not even mentioning the ridiculously large bill for the quality and quantity of the food. She chickened out bringing us back our change and had some random guy from the back do it, while he told us to ask for him if we ever had any problems again there. It would have been a nice gesture if he had told us his name! Way overpriced, but I guess they have to pay the rent for that bangin? location.

I have to admit, I am no expert on sushi. But I eat lots of it and, before sushi, I would NEVER eat any fish. But Maiko is one of the only places that I like to go to eat sushi in Austin. I've been to here quite a few times over the last few months, and their menu seems to be getting better! The menu seemed a little small, and didn't have too much variety, but now it seems to be getting underway. I only wish they had more vegetarian options ? not many places in Austin offer a good selection of veggie rolls, so this is kind of disappointing. However, what they do offer is delicious ? the rolls are not too small and have the right balance of rice, fish, and flavor. I admit, I get the same stuff all the time, but every once in a while, I get adventurous and try some different rolls ? so far I've never been disappointed (anything I haven't like was due to my own personal tastes).

I also enjoy the appetizers, like the tempura. The Maiko Salad is one of my new favorites, as well ? it's tangy and sweet, with goat's cheese. Delicious! The hot rock is always fun, but more important, yummy. And instead of just ordering the miso soup, I like the wild mushroom miso soup. It's worth the extra $2. I've also tried their delicious desserts! (Yeah, I like to eat!) I was pleased with the truffles and with the sorbets. A friend and I shared both theses desserts and we both found them to be not too filling, and so were a nice end to the night.

The service could use some work, but in the last few times I've been there, I had a waitress that was both attentive and nice. She wasn't too much of a bother, but didn't ignore me. It is a bit pricey, but I understand it's a business ? profit is important. Nevertheless, I'm never bothered to drop a good amount here.

Pros: Tasty sushi, good menu selection, great atmosphere, sushi chefs are always fun to talk to

Cons: Service could be better, not enough vegetable rolls offered

I've never posted on here before but my experience at this place made me register for an account.

Just wanted to let you know we will not be returning to this restaurant. My girlfriend and I came in Sunday night and were looking forward to our meal as I've always wanted to try Maiko. I've eaten a lot of sushi over the years and Maiko is definitely the *lowest* quality sushi I've ever eaten. The last bite my girlfriend took tasted like it had been rolled in dirt (yes, really). The fish quality was horrible, some unfresh, and our sushi rolls were pretty much all RICE. Besides the 'bad fish' flavor the rolls didnt look neatly assembled either, they looked like they were thrown together and I was worried with each bite that the tiny pieces of sushi would fall apart. There was hardly anything in the sushi. Waitress was nice, service was good. But seriously, I can't say enough BAD things about their horrible food. I wouldn't go back if you paid me

The staff at Maiko are truly the best in Austin. An excellent experience started as we entered the door of the restaurant. We were warmly greeted by the hostess given the best seat in the house and began a wonderful evening enjoying our favorite sushi and sashimi. Our waiter was one of the best and very knowledgeable of the menu and he took the time to give us delicious details of every dish that we ordered.
To our delight as we began to order, the waiter brought to our attention that we were on time for the Maiko Sushi Happy Hour, on a Saturday Night WOW! It is difficult to choose a favorite, each and every dish was prepared to perfection. But, one you must taste is the Spider Roll. Very tasty with crispy softshell crab and a spicy aioli with avocado and cucumber. When we were preparing to leave the owner came to our table thanked us for coming to Maiko and asked how we enjoyed the meal. What a great experience!

I came here to look up the number to Maiko, and I am shocked to see ANY poor reviews. I feel like the below reviews are from a competitor or from someone who is just shameless about the things they say about someone's business. I couldn't disagree more with the negative reviews. I started going to Maiko when they opened their doors 2 years ago. We went for a friends birthday party. Now I dine their on average once a month - usually on the weekends for dinner with friends. First of all, the service is impeccable! The waiters are all very personable and helpful, but without being wordy. I hate going to a restaurant where the server is either too absent or too in your face. The service at Maiko is neither - it's always excellent - so much so that I always tip well over 20%. Secondly, the food is great! I've never had a bad meal at Maiko. My boyfriend does not like fish at all, and he LOVES their Chilean Sea Bass dish. It's definitely worth a try on your first visit. My personal favorite is Walu nigiri at any sushi restaurant, and Maiko's is always great. For rolls, I would recommend trying the dragon roll or the hook roll (which has walu or "escolar" in it.... yum). Maiko also carries a great selection of wines, and for really reasonable prices. On top of all of this, Maiko is just a really great, fun place with a great ambiance, perfect for the after work crowd. I promise you will have an excellent time, and you will fall in love with this cozy little joint just like I have! Plus, you'll find they have a great little party room in the back - great for birthdays... they even have a little karaoke set up for these kind of occasions. I hope you enjoy your meal and this restaurant as much as I have!!!!

It shocks to see so many bad reviews about maiko. I frequent this establishment and am always VERY satisfied, if not more. The music is always hip, the food is fresh and innovative, the drink are always great and the servers and bartenders are knowledgeable and more than ready to ensure that you have a wonderful experience. I have experienced long wait times for the food, but come on people, its all hand made. I will continue to frequent Maiko and support this great restaurant.

Bad service in a place that is not even half full. The sushi was terrible and when we complained the manager was rude. We told him that we expected fish. He said "well it's really a tar tar that is blended." On the menu it say "tuna roll" NOT tar tar!!! Rude rude rude manager!!! I will Never Ever Ever go back.

My folks are in town this week, I took them to Maiko sushi this evening and I will never go back. The tuna in my spicy tuna roll didn't look like any tuna I have ever seen before - and I've eaten a lot of spicy tuna rolls. The waitress was also very unpleasant and charged me more for my rolls than the menu listed price! When I pointed it out to her she just said "sorry" instead of correcting the mistake. I finally left anyway but I didn't leave a tip. This place is NOT worth your time or money!

My boyfriend and I use to go to Maiko for their Happy Hour several months ago... but stopped going those several months ago. We thought we would give them another chance... but found out nothing has improved!

The service use to be great... Now It Is Awful ~ Not Friendly or Attentive! The sushi use to be good and worth it, Now YUCK! Not always Fresh or Tasty.

They really should re-staff and get better fish!!

There are much better sushi places in Austin and who have great Happy Hours!

My girlfriends and I like to sit at the bar at Maiko on Friday nights. We go around 8:00 and order drinks and sushi. They have this yummy martini that is made up of champagne and has strawberries floating in it and a sugar coated rim. I'm not sure what it is called but it's my favorite! The sushi is always good. I get the Maiko roll and the spider roll. They usually have a dj who spins and the crowd is young and fun. It's a good place to start your night.

One would assume that a new sushi restaurant in the upcoming trendier section of downtown Austin would be a sure-thing. If so, one would be assuming very wrong. Their sushi rolls are horrible -- the rice is always either way under or overcooked, and the seaweed is always chewy and of strange texture. At least the fish is of decent-enough quality, although nothing to write home about. The edamame is the best thing they offer on the food menu. If you're looking for a fancy fusion drink and some edamame, then this is your place. Otherwise, move two blocks east and one block south to Kenichi.

My boyfriend and I were certainly wooed by the amazing decor of this restaurant. Our server was very sweet and helpful in recommending a sake. HOWEVER, we came for sushi, and we were very disappointed. The fish just didn't taste fresh and the sushi rolls tasted like they were made by a novice. In Austin, I've eaten wonderful sushi at Kenichi, Kyoto, and Uchi. Maiko's needs to step it up quite a bit to even compare to these other establishments. Take your business elsewhere.

I don't know what this most recent post is talking about. Maiko is fantastic. In terms of its sushi, it's always fresh and delicious. I love sitting at the sushi bar and talking with all of the sushi chefs! They always will cook you something special if you ask them, and are extremely knowledgeable and polite. The service is great and fast and there are always special things going on like djs and live bands and it is always a blast to be in there! The drinks are great! I really dont understand what that last person is talking about. I tell everyone about Maiko, and so far no one has ever complained. Quite the opposite! Everyone I know that I've sent in has raved about how great it is!

Worst sushi I have ever had. Do not go here. It's so not worth it. Entirely too expensive for what they serve. My sushi was warm and our drinks were so light on the alcohol that we had to order another shot to add to them. This place is a rip off.

I'm so disappointed to see the bad reviews and that management has not responded. We have ALWAYS enjoyed Maiko. They traditionally have a great Happy Hour. And, come on, with sushi, you always have to wait no matter where you go. Maiko has always been very good quality and a good price, and I have typically thought the service good. I'm going again today, so I'll let you know how it turns out!

Cons: Parking fills quickly on street

Is this place really the best of CitySearch 2006??!?!

Probably one of the worst, fancy sushi places I have ever been. Seating was prompt but the rest was sloooow. Appetizers, excuse me, they don't have official "appetizers", came out slow. Had the crabcakes which were pretty good. Seemed out of place at a sushi place. Fried calamari was dang bland. The sauce that came with it had little impact. The appetizers were slow, the actual sushi came out even slower. We waited a good 20 minutes after our "appetizers" and about 30 minutes after we place the orders originally. All for 2 rolls! Horrible turn around time. The place wasn't even that busy. The actual sushi was again, bland. Sushi is generally somewhat bland to begin with but this was nothing to write to Grandma about. Overall, I will never come back. I was expecting something more than I could get down the street. This place poses as a high end joint but I see right through the trendy decor.

Pros: Nice place to be seen if you don't care about good food or have never had it.

Cons: Takes 20 minutes to make 2 rolls?

Went to Maiko for lunch; showed up right at noon and the restaurant was far from full. We sat down and ordered off the lunch menu -- very standard nigiri combo w/ soup & salad -- all three of us ordered the same thing. 20 minutes later, the soup came out. 15 minutes later, the salad was delivered. At 12:45 I asked the server if he knew when our sushi would be out, and his response was that it would be ready when the sushi chefs got it ready -- wow! How helpful! Finally our food arrived nearly an hour after we sat down and was mediocre at best. Unfortunately, this experience seemed to be more the norm than the exception! The waiter finally did apologize for the wait -- when he dropped the check and probably realized his tip was in jeapordy.

The food here is overpriced for what you are getting. I mean, don't get me wrong, I do not mind paying an arm and a leg for quality food but the sushi here is not fresh and the dishes are not impressive. I would highly recommend going somewhere else to get good sushi.

What a wonderful place Maiko is now. Courteous service from the hostess to the busser. What a difference a new manager makes. Everything was spectacular from the new kitchen menu ,familiar sushi menu, all the way down to the attentive server who refolded my napkin for me when I left momentarily to say hi to some friends at the bar. I will certainly be going to Maiko more often. Kudos to the new and improved Maiko.

A couple posts below is mine and I am mad at myself that I even bothered again. I refused to eat there again, however, I took a friend from Chicago there just for a drink the other night..even that was a disaster. We went in and there was one bar table available - but needed to be bussed. After sitting for 10 minutes with no service and a dirty table, we bussed it ourselves. We took all of the plates, napkins, glasses, etc. to the bartender and she just took everything from us. She didn't apologize nor did she try and send a busser/server over to help us. Then she actually handed us a towel and made us wipe it down. After 5 more minutes of no server, I went to the manager and told him what happened. His response in a rude tone was "sorry YOU sat at a dirty table" and then he walked away. I will never ever return. I'm actually mad at myself that I returned after the two previous terrible experiences. I won't give them one more dollar out of my pocket.

A few weeks ago I made an unfortunate trip to this place with a group of friends. The few pieces of sushi I got to taste that my friends gave me were OK. But I left the restraunt hungry because the server never brought me my order after both myself and my friends repeatedly questioned her where it was. She did finally bring it after I had crossed my order off the bill, the bill was paid, and half my friends were out the door on to the next place. I complained to the manager who told me to email him my address and he would send me gift certificates to mak up for it. Well, it's been 2 weeks since I emailed him and I haven't received anything so 1) I was never served 2) I was lied to. This place STINKS WORST DINING EXPERIENCE EVER!!

Good for lunch, not so for dinner. Once the music crowd and scene kick in-get out. With their eye to Tokyo this could work in a tru urban environ. Austin isn't there yet.

For $15.50, the sushi and sashimi special came with only 3 pieces of smaller than average salmon rolls, 3 spicy tuna rolls, and 6 thin slices of sashimi. The meal was not very appetizing as the color of the salmon indicated it's not fresh, as confirmed by its taste. Plus it took them an unusual 30 minutes to deliver this during lunch time when there were only 4 other tables seated with people. Plus the green teas cost $2 extra each when it is always a standard drink included in all japanese restaurants!! Imagine if you go to a normal restaurant and they charge you $2 for the default glass of water. If you're looking for some cute girls to check out, this is the place. If you're looking for good sushi, good sashimi, and good service, go elsewhere. This is pretty obvious after the fact, (not to be r@cist or anything but sushi quality demands rigorous traditional sushi preparation training) but there's not a single japanese sushi chef to be seen in the sushi bar; only a mexican sushi chef. Hey, I came from new york city hoping for some decent japanese sushi. Maiko offers severely overrated sushi at exceptionally low standards at new york city prices. The only consolation is that at least they got the green tea right.

I've eaten at at least 8 sushi places in town, and i'd rate this one a 7 on the sushi scale. There are better and there are worse. The happy hour does not have a good selection. I wouldnt recommend it. The dinner menu has more to choose from, but the service has been exceedingly slow everytime i have been. Inside tip - if you call and they will tell you they don't take reservations, but call back and talk to someone else. Sometimes some of the employees will especially if it's a special occasion. If you like a fun atmosphere and aren't in a rush, it's a good spot.

My wife and I just enjoyed a beautiful meal last night at Maiko. They presented fresh fish with prompt and attentive service, including a wonderful wine selection. My wife enjoyed a special from the kitchen that was outstanding (Seared Tuna with Au Pauve Sauce), and the manager told inofrmed us that they have a new chef. Very Tasty. I would suggest this restaurant to anyone who wants a great meal of sushi and/or specialty dishes. Also check out the wine list, it is worth a peek. Mike is a wonderful waiter.

Maiko used to have the best sushi happy hour in town. A few months ago, I abandoned Kyoto in favor of Maiko's better food, nicer atmosphere, and excellent and extensive food and drink specials until 7pm 7 days a week. I'd dine there about once a week, especially on Sundays when they had $1 large hot sakes. We'll, several weeks ago they did away with all their happy hour drink specials. When I told the manager I loved the food but was disappointed with this change, his only reply was a very rude and dismissive "Well, I'm sorry you're disappointed." Then we returned last night and found that they had severely cut back their happy hour sushi selection (e.g., no more spider rolls or rock n rolls) and their reinstituted "drink specials" just weren't that special. The very nice server said he'd received many complaints. Judging from the much-smaller crowd I observed, I think they may be headed for trouble.

Recommendations:
1) bring back your old offerings.
2) find a manager who can at least act like he gives a rodent's patuti about his customers.

I went there on a Sunday night with several girlfriends. The restaurant was not even half full, but it took over an hour to get our sushi. When it came, one of the rolls had not been made, and then, it was made incorrectly. Also, with the exception of the spicy tuna, the rolls tasted BAD and the fish seemed old. When we spoke to the manager, he was incredibly rude and condescending. He didn't charge us for the roll that wasn't made correctly, but showed no concern or remorse for the excessive time we waited or the poor quality of the food.

I had been there a couple times before, and it was ok. However, we were treated so poorly, and the sushi was so bad, that all 5 of us declined the $30 gift card he offered, as none of us intend to ever go back.

The sushi is very fresh. The rolls are unique. And the pieces are large. Even the hot entress are tasty. Wash it all down with one of their specialty martinis. For the best value, go for their half price happy hour in the bar/lounge. The service could be more attentive. But overall a great addition to the sushi options downtown.

Allthough they have a reasonable happy hour, I would say that the horrendous service pretty much seals this resteraunt's fate. Our drinks took WAY too long (the place wasn't very busy) and then our waiter proceeded to spill my martini all over the table and my pants and didn't even apologize or come over with a rag or a napkin to clean it up. Then we had to wait forever to get him to come take our order. Once our sushi arrived we had no plates or soy sauce and just sat there staring at our food until one of us went to the sushi chefs and asked for some service. The waiter also was generally uninterested in helping us make selections and answering our questions about the menu. The food was average to above average, but the abominable service is the reason that I will never come back.

Please "Do NOt" Pay any attention to the negative reviews as some people will never be pleased. As a true foodie and a sushi chef let me tell you that Chef Taka is doing a wonderful job. He works with flavors mixes with different textures. Excellent decor with a artsy touch of Austin - Locals artist display their talents around the restaurant. Everytime I go I've yet to order something that didn't make me want to close my eyes and smile. It's a great date spot or place to astound out-of-town visitors. The staff is efficient and extremely knowledgable. Don't forget to try their Daily happy hour from 4:30-7:00. Enjoy !

Went here New Years Eve and although the atmosphere is really nice and the drinks were great, my entree was very disappointing. I ordered the soba noodles with scallops in a "beurre blanc" sauce -- $18. It arrived without a hint of garnish, 3 small pan seared scallops, and utterly flavorless noodles underneath. For $18 I expected more. The rest of my group ordered sushi and they were satisfied but I am not sure any of us were impressed enough to go back.

All the reviews i saw for this restaurant were excellent, so I decided to take my husband there for his bithday. But the sushi was not that fresh, the soy sauce was the saltiest I have ever had, and the service - terrible. We were made to wait way too long to order and the waiter was not to be seen if we needed anything. I dont know if it was just a bad day, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone for dinner. The decor and music were great, and I think if we had better service, we would have actually enjoyed it inspite of the not so fresh sushi.

I've been to this restaurant many times & I've got to say that their happy hour rocks. You get the most for your money here. Everyone rants & raves about Koto's happy hour but i've been there several times & I've got to say that it is decent but pales to Maiko due to ambience & atmosphere. Maiko has great prices during happy hour & our waiter or waitress has always been by to check on us unlike at Kotos where you order once & hardly see them again until after happy hour is over. The place is nice & new & clean & trendy. It's a great place to hang out at or even grab a late night bite after the clubs close since it closes @ 3 am on the weekends. I definitely recommend it. Parking can be tough so you may have to valet.
