I don't know where to start from...First of all, I went to eat to Carmens twice and I'm never going back because of the pricy food and the little amount of food they serve for what they charge. They charged me $14 for the skirt steak that looked like a kids menu. You could hardly find the piece of meat in the plate. The size of the sides they serve look the same as lunch (I don't see what is the point of charging dinner price then).
It is sad that I have to write this because there aren't much cuban restaurants in the area. I hope the owners do something about the food quality, prices and portions, especially nowadays that we are all looking for good deals and good places to spend our money at.

I was born and raised in Cuba, have eaten at many Miami Cuban restaurants and even know how to cook typical Cuban dishes.
The Arroz con Pollo was a total disaster. Based on looks and flavor, it was obvious to me that the rice was cooked separately and later on joined by a few pieces of dry chicken breasts with no flavor. The portion was very small, but that did not matter, since it was not worth eating.
My wife had the fried chicken which was a little better but not up to par and her white rice and black beans were acceptable.
The bread was not even close to Cuban bread -- I would have preferred just plain regular bread rolls.
The fried ripe plantains looked great, but I think the oil had been used one too many times because the flavor was strange.
I tried topping the meal off with a good Cuban espresso, but that was disappointing also.
Instead of the $8.95 advertised for each lunch, they tried to charge me $13.95 a piece which they quickly corrected when I complained about it. Apparently, the dinner "button" was pressed instead of the lunch button.
I deeply regret that I answered "just fine" when asked how the meal was. I should have been honest about it. Perhaps that would help them improve on future meals.

Pros: Good location, nice ambience

Cons: Highly priced bad Cuban food

I am cuban and this is the closest to authentic cuban you will find in raleigh! Quite pricey, not like miami, where you will find authentic for half the cost great quality. I have had the ropa vieja and moro. my friend had the arroz con pollo (and he said it was awesome,i believe him even though he is a gringo-cubans know that gringos do not know a thing about sabor(flavor)-looks like my arroz con pollo-and that is the best!

Not what I expected after all the glowing reviews. Food was bland and tasteless (Masitas del Cuerpo)- I went at noon and watched the female wait staff stand at the counter in a group yapping away, ignoring diners. One diner actually had get up and walk across the room to request Ketchup. I waved my arm and caught the eye of the hostess who ignored me requiring me to also walk over and request fresh garlic and tobasco sauce for my bland tasteles pork dish. This place is strictly for gringos and is anything but authentic. The food has no latin flavor no latin spices. I have eaten a burger from MacDonalds with more flavor! But the gringos seemed to love it. They can say they have eaten Cuban.. I was there at noon and there were 6 diners with 5 more coming in and 4 leaving as I tried to make sense of my totally bland and tasteless meal. A waste of 20 dollars with arrogant minimally respectful waitresses. I am told they open up and become a nightclub on weekends- I think that is what keeps the the place open because Carmens is no place for real authentic Cuban food. Just terrible!

Pros: Nice Location

Cons: Terrible Food and Terrible Service

Food is adequate. Very basic when it comes to Cuban food in comparison to Cuban food in Miami, FL. Maybe because it is Americanized for the area? Service is good, have had some longer waits during the lunch rush.

Carmen's Cuban food is delicious. The atmosphere is fun and the music is great. Our server was very attentive as well. They have a full bar so it's a great place to have dinner and then hang out with friend's.

Carmen's have wonderful food that reminded me of my trip to Puerto Rico! The plantains were delicious and the meat melted in my mouth. It is great to have such wonderful ethnic food so close to home!

Who woulda thought real Cuban food right here in the traingle? I would say this is on par with some of the best Cuban restaurants in Miami and highly recommend it to anyone to enjoys Cuban food. Even if you've never had it, should try it! Last time we visited I had the shrimp in garlic sauce - was delicious! Sauce so flavorful and rice and beans made just like I like them. Fried yuca was also quite tasty - my favorite side dish. Now, once you're done, you have to try the homemade flan - its just heavenly.

hey, one word...yummy...i am a regular at lunch with my coworkers and try to make it out there as often as possible for dinner with my husband. worth the drive! bc i cannot get enuf of this place. everything we've tried has been outstanding, from their staple dishes like the shredded beef, chicken and rice, to other varieties, like the seafood dishes. i love shrimp, so i alwys try a shrimp dish in a different sauce...all the sauces have so much flavor and if you like spicy, the havernero sauce is sooo good...i can easily eat that with rice alone. i don't usually clean my plates, but can't help it here. i might be stuffed, but will eat up every bite...it's that good! and get carlos to make you one of his mojitos...another yummy!

This is a great place to go for dinner. Its a little out of the way, but that usually means that you don't have to wait for a table. The food is excellent and huge portions for the price (and entree comes with plenty of extras). The service has always been outstanding and the waitstaff is professional (and patient as some of us butcher the names of the dishes). On weekends part of the place is opened up as a dance club, which is also great. Come for dinner - stay for the dancing.

This was our first time at Carmen's and it was pretty good. My wife and I both ordered fish entrees and I thought my swordfish was fair, at best, although I guess I always end up being a little turned off by fish in non-seafood restaurants anyway. The rest of the dish (sauce, rice, plantains, beans, etc) were very enjoyable. The appetizer sampler was great, and the plantains and yuca were fantastic. I think we would go back but I would stick with steak and pork entrees, and avoid the fish. The wait staff was friendly and the prices were decent. One thing that struck us as weird was the table arrangement - there's no divider when you walk in so there are a couple of tables by the door that are probably always vacant. And the 2-seat tables are all kind of in a row so its just sorta weird, but not uncomfortable. All in all, an enjoyable experience.

we are from miami and have moved around quite a bit. when we landed here in north carolina, we didn't expect to find an authentic cuban restaurant. then we discovered carmen's...the home-made authentic dishes are absolutely wonderful and reminds us of home. now when we go back to visit miami, we dont' have to get our fix of cuban food...we can get here everyday if we wanted to! our kids love to come here too - they like to try something different everytime and have not complained...which is unsual!

My husband and I can't wait for date night at Carmen's...this is by far our favorite restaurant for all the right reasons!!! I don't know what my favorite dish is b/c it's all so amazing!! If you're going for pork, you've got to try the tender and juicy Lechon Asado...for chicken, try the Pollo Empanizado (hubby's favorite)...for fish, try the Tilapia Frita!! WOW! We usually order extra to take home to the kids...they LOVE it too and they can be picky eaters! This place is large enough for family gatherings and my husband and I plan on having our 10th Anniversary celebration here. The staff is super friendly too...very attentive! We've even seen the cook come out on several occasions to speak with the customers...he's stopped by our table before too to make sure everything tasted great...now THAT'S SUPERIOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!! WE LOVE THIS PLACE!!!

We went to Carmen's for the first time this past weekend. We were greeted at the door by the manager who got us seated quickly. The waitress was extremely nice and helpful. I'm a vegetarian which is limiting at a Cuban restaurant but I went there knowing that and I love plantains and yucca enough that it didn't matter - the dessert made it totally worth it! We got the Mariquitas (plantain chips) for an appetizer, they were really good. My husband ordered a spicy pork steak with a side of beans and plantains and he (who is very picky!) loved it! I got the Tostones (twice fried plantains), Platanos Maduros (fried sweet plantains), and boiled yuca - all were great but I especially loved the Platanos Maduros! It had a nice but relaxed atmosphere and a very authentic feel. The service and quality of the food was outstanding. We got the Tres Leches cake which just melts in your mouth! There's a lounge next door which is apparently part of it but we didn't make it there this time. We will definitely return soon!

Been to Carmens quite a few times and have not been disappointed once. Although the lechon asado is just heavenly...meat so tender and full of flavor, I like trying the different dishes and all the flavorful sauces....if you like spicy, then try the havernero sauce. Too bad I don't live closer or I just might be there everyday! But luckily I work in the triangle and get to lunch there quite often. It is simly just really good food.

I am 100% Cuban & grew up in Miami and was thrilled to find Cuban food in the Raleigh area!

Don't pay too much attention to the few critics who are also from Miami or Cuban decent. If this restaurant were in South Florida it would be considered very good, but not categorized as exceptional fine dining. (They may have been expecting Las Culebrinas.)

However, I give it 5 stars because the food is very good, the atmosphere is inviting and the service is top notch. The Lechon, Yuca frita, plantain chips etc. are MUCH better than MY mom?s (just hope she doesn?t read this).

If you want to have a very nice lunch or a quality dining experience then you must head to Carmen?s.

I've tried it all - all the restaurants in the triangle that serve Cuban food and I keep coming back to Carmens. Couple of other places have closed, couple more have opened and been to them all. I should know better...once you find a good thing, should just stick with it. Frequented Carmens dozens of times and can't go wrong, from their staple dishes like the roasted pork (so tender it melts in your mouth) to exotic seafood entrees like the grouper or seafood havenero. As long as they're still around, we'll keep coming back! Wait staff are very friendly and attentive too.

Cuban food is our favorite cuisine and we were thrilled to find Carmens. We drive from Greensboro often to treat ourselves to this delightful experience. Too many delectable dishes to list...they serve all the main staple Cuban dishes we crave. At our last visit, we also tried the tilapia with a homemade mango sauce...it was out of this world. We love having a place to go to and try different dishes and know it will be good. We have been beyond satisfied. We met the owner/chef and learned that he was born and raised in Cuba and that's always good to know..confirms the authenticity of the food!

I was born and raised on Cuban food in Miami and this is nothing like Cuban food. The rice taste like it came out of a box and the pork taste like it was grilled and they just through garlic on it. The bread wasn't even Cuban bread. I was extremely dissappointed in the food. I ordered to go and took it home with me. If I would have ate in I promise you I would have asked see the chef this food was so bad. I would have left the food on the table after one bite. This was simply horrible!!!!!

The food was descent, but hopefully you have time to wait for service. It took us 1 hour to have our food served for a party of 5. The wait staff did not even check on us during the whole wait time, we had to inquire about our food several times.

The wait staff complained that they were packed at the moment. Then I would say to hire more staff to accommodate. It was the only place I have eaten at that I waited 1 hour for take away.

I have been to this place a few times, and everytime, it has been a pleasure.
One of the rare places, where i could eat latin dishes in the triangle.
Overall, their customer service is excellent. Didn't take long to order and to get the food served. Everyone was very nice and helpful.
I tried some of the house specialties, and i was very impressed. Excellent quality.

Another good thing, they also have some salsa music on tuesday nights. I love to salsa dance. I went there with some of my co-workers, and we have been back many times already.
Overall, i would recommend it to anyone, who wants to eat latin food. And for anyone wanting to learn to salsa dance or just dance some good salsa.

I have been visiting Carmen's Cuban since moving here several years ago from New York City. Being a dining out 'connosieur' I was delighted to see something different in this area. Carmen's Cuban Cafe is a true hidden gem. Unfortunately, many have not found it yet. It's decor is true to the Cuban/Carribean culture & very tastefully done. You will find a variety of items to choose from with their extensive menu & meet friendly folks.

If you're up for some nightlife with great latin music ...visit Carmen's on a Friday or Saturday night. I would normally fly to Miami or New York City to meet my needs of Latin Food or Latin Music..but I found Carmen's in my 'backyard'. What a true treat!!! I do keep in mind that I'm not in New York City or Miami. Where supplies to pull off such a fine place to dine in Raleigh/Morrisville/Triangle are not in abundance.. I think they do a GREAT job, in keeping me connected to my roots of Puerto Rico.

My family is from Cuba so I've had Cuban food all my life, especially growing up in Miami. When we moved to the area, we weren't expecting to find any Cuban restaurants here, much less a good one. Some friends recommended Carmen's so we tried it out. Turns out we were so pleasantly surprised at how great the food was. I had the ropa vieja and my husband had the chicken fricase and both were equally delicious. The house chicken soup was so flavorful and tasty. And if you like coconut and you like flan, you will love the coconut flan. Everyone was friendly and we chatted with a lot of people, it felt like home. We will be returning there often.

And if you like coconut and you like flan, you will love the coconut flan. Everyone was friendly and we chatted with a lot of people, it felt like home. We will be returning there often.

Pros: Fantastic food, nice restaurant

Cons: ?

My family is originally from Cuba and I grew up in Miami Florida and recently moved to North Carolina to start my career. Carmen's is a great Cuban restaurant, and the food is excellent and reminds me of home each time I go. The Service is prompt and they give great recommendations on the wine so that it compliments the food that you are eating. Carmen's also does a great job in capturing the soul and spice of Cuban food! I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to experience fine Cuban food.

I just move in town and was recomended this restaurant. I really appreciate been able to find a latinoamerican/cuban cuisines in RTP. I have been in Carmen's Cuba Cafe serveral times already and found the food consistent and good but it isn't something exciting or wonderful. I recomended to anyone looking to eat Latinoamerican food but I wouldn't have great expectations.

Cons: Not great

we have visited carmen's on several occasions and each time our experience has been excellent from the variety of delicious authentic cuban entrees to the service we've received. the roasted pork -a staple cuban dish - is heavenly - so tender it melts in your mouth and the flavors are incredible. the palomilla steak is prepared just how we like it, they also have some wonderful seafood options...the tilapia is perfect and has become a favorite. we were there recently with a large party of friends and family celebrating an anniversary and everyone had such a wonderful time and enjoyed the food...we were proud to be the ones that recommended this place. how wonderful that more culture is finally coming to the RTP area.

I work in the RTP area and have taken many clients to Carmen's for business lunches/dinners. Some of our clients make regular visits to RTP and always requests to have lunch at Carmen's or go there themselves for dinner. Once, a group of them chose to take a later flight out of Raleigh so that they could dine at Carmens! We also have had food catered from there for several of our functions at work and each time has been a great experience. We usually get a variety of different dishes and they are all gone by end of lunch! Everyone raves about the food! So we are happy to have found a delicious restaurant that is different than the usual fast food experiences in the triangle and it also has a very nice, chic ambience too...great place to hang out and have couple of their mojitos (the best I've had yet)!

Pros: Great food, reasonable prices, accommodates large groups

Cons: parking spaces get filled up quickly

All I can figure is that any positive review about this place was written by their staff. The food is anything but Cuban food. Spices are all wrong, flavor is awful, the alleged "Cuban bread" was anything but, even the white rice was bad. Folks, I was born and raised in Miami to a Cuban mom and grandma who knew how to cook Cuban food and this place just doesn't do it. Anyone who likes it, simply doesn't know the real thing.
Then the service..wow! Right when I thought that the food was bad enough, the service proved to be equally as bad. The only thing left was the bill which was way high. While I do believe in paying a fair price for a good meal, this was neither.
To say that we were hugely disappointed would be to put it mildly.

Pros: Easy access to the interstate in order to leave this place ASAP

Cons: Too many to list here

All I can say is three things: 1st, if this is authentic cuban food, well, I'm very sorry for cuban people; 2nd, if you pay something expensive but with a high quality, it doesn't matter if the portion is not large, but if you're paying, for a regular portion of food with a very poor quality, no matter what the price is, you will feel you're wasting your money; and 3rd, people saying this restaurant is great, I guess they are people who had never been to a latinamerican country and had never try "the real deal". Very dissapointing experience.

Wow - a true authentic Cuban restaurant in the Triangle! My family and I love Cuban food, so we were thrilled to find out about Carmens. Their variety of Cuban dishes is quite impressive and the best tasting we've had in a long time. Some of our favorites are the Palomilla Steak, Ropa Vieja, shrimp in havenero sauce (spicy). And the Tilapia is out of this world. The owners (father and son team) are always so friendly and accomodating and we appreciate their hospitality. What a great place to dine!

Cons: pricing

I wasn't anticipating a Cuban sandwich as good as those in Miami, Tampa or Cuba, but the dry, tasteless Cubano that is served at Carmen's Cuban Cafe & Lounge was truly disappointing. The one piece of ham and some shredded pork scraps were completely overwhelmed by the pressed bread. This was a dry, tasteless sandwich. Although their menu contains a variety of exciting entrees, if a Cuban restaurant can't make a good Cuban sandwich one can not trust the rest of their offerings.

I made reservations for a party of 6 then changed it to 10 and finally to 12 plus an infant and the staff obliged warmly each time. The ambience is simple but nice, with a yellow and red paint scheme and framed pre-revolution era Cuban tourism posters on the walls. The food is the real draw here. Between the 12 of us, we tried pork, steak and shrimp each served with plantains or yuka, yellow rice and black or red beans. Each dish drew raves, the highest compliment coming from a friend of Cuban descent who remarked "this is the best Cuban food I've had outside of Little Havana." It was also nice to see the owner who checked in with us. A refreshing change of pace from the usual ethnic cuisine.

As south Florida natives, my family and I love Cuban food. Carmen's authentic Cuban cuisine is wonderful and brings fond memories of my grandmother's favorite dishes such as roasted pork, black beans, plantains, flan, etc. Whether dining with co-workers or with family, the setting is warm and the staff is very welcoming. It is not uncommon for the owners to visit your table to make sure everything is just right. The setting is great for both large and small parties. I highly recommend Carmen's for fantastic food, ambiance and staff!

My husband and I LOVE this restaurant! :) We meet here for lunch whenever we can; it's super convenient for me working in RTP and him in Cary. Everything we've ordered has been so fresh and tasty; its just as delicious as the Cuban food we had in Miami! The staff is always so friendly and you really get a lot of food for your money. It's a pleasing, relaxing atmosphere; the decor is quite nice and so cozy. We have lots of fun dancing in the new Club side too!

What an awesome experience at this Cuban restaurant! My husband and I have been there many times because the food is delicious, service is pleasant, the cost is reasonable, and the atmosphere is romantic & cozy. My favorite dish is the breaded chicken. What a delight! The nightclub is much fun as well. This is definitely the place to go to for a feverish salsa dancing.

Living most of my life in Miami, I am familiar with cuban cuisine. I have looked for good cuban cuisine in the area, which is hard to find.

Granted, with the comparison to cuban restaurants in Miami, Carmen's food is mediocre. After bringing groups of people to Carmen's to taste the flavor of cuban food, most walk away satisfied with plans to return.

Note: Some dishes are better than others.

Food is not authentic Cuban cuisine. Very much overpriced. The Cuban sandwich I had was not served on Cuban bread and had a ton of pork in it...not the real deal.
