The food was ok somewhat however they have some of the worst server attitude in this whole town. This hair-dyed-wearing-glasses young lady was our server, she was extremely rude and mean. There was no manager on site and no host to greet

I was told it is NOT associated with the one in downtown. I went to downtown the food portion is small, not fresh and expensive.\r
The westheimer location: great food. My fave is the duck. It's crispy and yet so moist. The service is great

I have always had a very good experience at Yao's. I loved the decor, the hostess was polite. The waiters were prompt and very pleasant.
I enjoyed the food very much, the menu was not quite the usual Chinese, I found it to be of a higher

This restaurant was such a pleasant surprise! The food was the best I've had since moving from California 20 years ago. And definitely the best since moving to Houston 7 years ago.

There was nothing, absolutely NOTHING I had that I didn't like. Even my iced tea was excellent. I usually have to sweeten my tea, but the flavor was so good that it wasn't even necessary. If someone doesn't like this food, they've been going to cheap buffets too long and have never had good Chinese food.

The vegetables in my dish were so fresh and had excellent flavor. They weren't just "fillers" as they usually are. I think I may have actually tasted some of the kinds of vegetables in my dish for the first time. :) I also had the wonton soup before my meal and it was the best I've ever had.

The service was great, everyone was very friendly. Some may say that it's a little pricey for lunch, but it was no more pricey, and probably less so, than most restaurants. It is worth every penny. Actually, I'm very thankful that Yao has a restaurant that isn't as "high end" as most sports figures have. (Though I know there is another downtown that is more so. Hey, I'd save my pennies and go there sometime as well!) And on top of that, in West Houston. We too can enjoy excellent Chinese cuisine!

I can't say enough. The whole time I was enjoying my food, I was thinking that I HAD to remember to write a review online as soon as I got back to work. And it wasn't just me, I think it's pretty much all we talked about the entire meal...how good the food was.

We went a little early, at 11:00 and were able to beat the big lunch rush. I have a friend that said that it was a little slow when she went last, but that it was still completely worth it, and she realized it was the lunch rush.

Even if it's not often, go here, even for lunch. You may not be accustomed to treating yourself to more than the fast food and barbecue in this area, but please do. You won't regret it.

My compliments to the chef, and Yao Ming for bringing us this caliber of Chinese food. Thank you!!

We made a reservation for 9 people. When we got there, they put together 5 tables for a rectangular setting. We told them that we preferred to sit a round table, the hostess blamed us for not telling them when making the reservation and told us we needed to wait 30 minutes. How are the customers supposed to know what setting they have available?

When seated we waited for 10 minutes for a waiter to take our drink order. At the same time, we told him we were ready to order the main course, he shoot us off and said will come back later. After 15 minutes and 2 complaints , he finally showed up (the hostess actually was trying to stop me making my first complaint to the manager).

The waiter didn't show up again during our course of meal. We had to stop other wait staff for refill and other services.

And guess what? They automatically added the gratuity to our bill. It's a common restaurant policy but for them actually doing that after providing such poor service. One word...Shameless!

We were tired of the same old Chinese food in the Galleria area restaurants where we've gone for years and spent some time on line checking out reviews...found this listed overall as the best Chinese food in Texas.

One time there....and we believe it.

Best Chinese we've had since visiting our daughter in San Francisco for July 4th weekend (2009)

Yao's was average food-wise. Yes, it's owned by a sports celebrity. So? The interior decor is quite average. If I shut my eyes, then opened them, I wouldn't even know I was in a Chinese restaurant. The decor is nondescript. Not a scintilla of Orientalia to be seen. No free tea. No free fortune cookies even! The service was excellent, the menu large. The food was okay. It was quite crowded for lunch. There's nothing memorable about the place. Yes, decent eats for a good price. That's it.

Yao Restaurant & Bar (simply known as Yao's) is the restaurant owned by NBA superstar Yao Ming. The food was amazing and the server we had was super-friendly and helpful. The set-up of the restaurant was nice but not too fancy. A combination of traditional Chinese decor mixed with a basketball vibe with all the memorabilia on display.

YAO'S Is the best chinese food iv'e ever had, anywhere! The service is great and I would say it's speed is normal. But hey while you wait you can check out their world class bar. If mixed drinks are your thing try a GREEN MONKEY,but its a sneaky one. My favorite dish is the sezchaun pork with shrimp, it is the best iv'e ever had. The eggrolls are also one of a kind, they are packed with cabbage and chunks of chicken unlike most places that use shredded meat. The setting is so beautiful and unique, it would be perfect for any type of dinner. Overall I would have to give YAO'S 5 stars although, it would be nice to see YAO there...

So last week My Boyfriend and a friend decided to check out YAO's. Well we loved it. We all agreed that it was the best Chinese American food in Houston. The pricing was real cheap. I was actually expecting to pay more. The decorations were lovely and spacious. I love sweet and sour chicken and they made real soft not hard like most places. ANyways check this place out.

I have always wanted to try this place and I went for a small company lunch. Everything was going good until we noticed about 30 minutes after our appetizers that our main dishes were not here yet. Ya well we didn't even see a waiter til another 30 minutes and that is when they informed us that they had lost our order and they are starting to prepare it now. When the food finally got there we were so disappointed that we had waited over an hour for our food and found out PF Changs is way better!!!! There was nothing special to the food and the service is horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We didn't get out of there with in 2 hours! How sad!

The food was surpisingly good and authentic. This place isn't gourmet at all, and it shows in the price. You are pretty much paying like couple bucks more - than those other lai-tan-shanghai-hunanhashdkjhsd restaurants - for the interior decor/name of the restuarant. It's worth it if you are looking to eat chinese in a pretty place. Happy hour at the bar is def a plus.

I love the salmon. I never has such good taste when it comes to the sauce for the pan seared salmon. First time there and definitely will be back. When I first walked into the door, I was greeted right away with warm welcome. The server seem to be very knowledgeable on all the menu items when asked. He recommended me to have the Pan Seared salmon. The fish is just right not overly done. The meat is moist and the hot chili sauce that come with is is sweet but not overpowering. It is just right. I will be back for more to try out different items.

I brought a group of my co-workers there for the first time for their happy Hour! They have great happy hour. Inaddidtion to that their bar served full menu just like a restaurant. Most Bar do not serve full menu but they do. We ordered the crab wontons and chicken lettuce warp. I have to tell you, the crab wonton is to die for! It is stuffed with generous portion of cream cheese. The best part is the bartender Jose. He was very personable and he took great care of us. I have to applaud him for accomodating our loud group.

DO NOT GO ON A SUNDAY! LISTEN TO ANTHONY BOURDAIN.
I went with a friend on a Sunday night, as was recommended by her father. Place was not crowded when we arrived, but the waiter we got was... tweaking? Kept looming over the table. Ordered tea service, dumplings, noodles for friend, and cashew chicken/shrimp for self. Wait wasn't too bad, but after one bite I realized, hey, this has neither shrimp nor nuts and is quite spicy. Said waiter dissapears for ten minutes, comes over and when I told him of the wrong order he replied, "Yeah, we were talking in the kitchen about it. Do you still want it?" NO. Proceeds to bag our leftovers with more... flair than necessary and is loud with bag. And as we finished our tea, I open the teapot and look in. A teeny tiny snail shell is staring right back at me. Yay organic?
I don't plan on visiting anytime soon. Can get perfectly good Chinese food a helluva lot closer to home.

We sat on the bar side and still had really great service, but the food was merely okay. We had pan-fried prok dumplings, which were okay - although the filling was great - and the house spicy beef, which was not spicy. A liberal helping of chilli paste took care of the lack of spice, but there wasn't anything I could do to rememdy the lack of flavor. The quality of the meat and vegetables was great - it's as if they did some market research and intentionally decided to make the food bland. Still, it was a fun place to hang out. I'll come back and order something different next time.

Great place to bring your business clients. All my guests enjoyed it. The service was amazing. We ordered the banquet menu with most food off the menu. I loved the lobster seafood salad. This salad will "Wow" you! They have a whole lobster on top of mixed fresh fruit. The dressing is sweet and light. I do not know what dressing is that! They should put it in the menu instead of having it ordered in advance. Heads up to Yao's team, they made our experience a memorable. The manager is very hospitable. They took the liberty to introduce Yao's uncle to our table. Thumbs UP! Will definitely go back for more!

Great place. I should have stop by long ago. Last night is my first time to the restaurant. Myself and my family enjoyed it. When it comes to chinese food, we always eat in Chinatown. We never actually tried some other place. It's American Chinese alright, but the service is great. My favourite is the Pork belly and tofu. It does not sound good but it taste great. I was impressed by the service. I have the peking duck and it was awesome. My wife tried the infused tea. She loves the jasmine ball flowers and bought some home. Overall, I will definitely be back. The price is affordable.

I can't tell you how much fun I had with some of my girlfriends at Yaos for afternoon tea. They have all these flavors and mind you these were fresh teal leaves not the stuff they have in a bag. We tried three of there most popular tea's they come in these cute clear warmers. I wanted to buy one and take them home...lol. So me and my girlfriends had a variety of Tea's and appetizers, the ginormous chicken egg rolls with the peanut sauce was delicious and so was the chicken wings which they cutely named phoenix wings. We also placed a order for the peking duck it came out fresh and crispy, the chef carved the duck right in front of us...this duck fed all six of us. I must say I was pretty stuffed by the end, but the waiter reccomended the green tea pudding since we loved the infused tea so much. I never tried a pudding made from tea and I thought it would come out weird, but to my suprise the pudding was one of the best chinese desearts I ever at in a chinese restaurant, I liked it so much that I ordered one to go for my mom...

Fan of Yao Restaurant. Great service and food. Most Chinese Clients I brought in are impressed with the service and food. The servers are polite. I Couln't help notice the reviews as most bad reviews are Chinese. If you do not like American Chinese food, then stick to China town! Why complain? I ordered a peking duck and they did carved inside the kitchen. It was fine for me coz it tastes just as good. The manager was very attentive and hospitable. I will definetly go back!

Yao's is one of the best chinese restaurants in town. The food is always fresh and they use the best ingredients. The General Tso's chicken is to die for, a light batter and sweet and tangy sauce is to die for. I have reccomended this restaurants to my coworkers and we frequent the restaurant for lunch many times. A few pointers to avoid the lunch time crowd go a little earlier at 11:30 or a little later around 1:30 to be promptly seated.

This is my 1st-time writing a review for a restaurant. We had a bad experience of dining at this restaurant. We called in advance to reserve a table and a peking duck, and was told no need to reserve the duck. We came on time and waited for ~10min (only 30% seated at 7PM Sunday night). The peking duck was served quickly, but pre-carved and cold. Even the biscuit to roll the meat was cold. We were hungry as just came back from beach so we did not care too much, thought maybe this was Yaorestaurant's style. But later we saw the neighboring table have the duck carved right on the table and it was obviously hot. We were really upset by the different treating. The waiter did not give us an reasonable explanation, but blaming to us. So did the restaurant manager (he did give us $20 off the total bill). BTW, the food tasted really salty, we couldn't finish. Rice served was not good quality rice. The infused tea (I saw one review really complimented it) tasted like normal hot tea served in other Chinese restaurants typically cost $1.95, but costed $6.95, and they gave us two pots. When asking why gave us two, the waiter replied "I thought you wanted two".
Personally I am a fan of Yao. But we were really disappointed by this restaurant under his name (Yao's parents own it). I think this restaurant has been mis-managed by a bunch of people. At least the service is inconsistant. The decoration and the atmosphere is good rought. But we will not come back to try a 2nd time. PS: for a much better peking duck, try Peking Cuisine just couple miles away. Better value too.

This is a place that's exactly the same as PF Chang's. It's good for it's decor, peaceful atmosphere, and clean environment, but the food is far from authentic. I'd say for general restaurant-goers, this is a nice place to eat Chinese. For people who know what real Chinese food is, it's quite disappointing. This is good AMERICANIZED chinese food, but don't expect it to be anything else.

This is the first time that I have written a review for CitySearch. I have visited Yao's six times now. I find the food to be made to order fresh, delicious, with refreshing takes on the traditional offerings of a Chinese Food Restuarant. One of my favorite things is the infused tea service. The first time I visited, I ordered just regular hot tea---oolong. It was served with a tiny napkins under the cup the a small slice of very fresh lemon. I would have gone back daily and just for the tea. But the next time I went, there was no tiny napkin and no lemon slice. Consistency, in even the smallest of details, is very important. I told myself, having found a great appetizer, the shredded chicken and cucumber, that I was looking forward to this appetizer with the finely shredded scallions on the plate. The next time I went, to my surprise and disappointment, the scallions were no longer finely shredded. The food is still great, with impeccable service all but one of the six times we went. The once was when our waiter took our order and we watched as we looked out the window to see him driving off. He must have had an emergency. He never returned. Finally, the hostess noticed we were looking kind of dumbfounded and she asked if she could help. Our meal and an extra appetizer arrived swiftly after that. Recomendation: Highly recommened. My husband and I go once a week. I am surprised by the other reviews, as we find the prices very inexpensive for the quality of food, amount of food, ambience, and service. We have also used the take out. Kudos to the hostess (s)---always right on!

We went to Yao's specifically to try the Peking Duck and to celebrate our wedding anniversary . We had heard great reviews about the duck on the radio. The duck was cold and had already been pre-carved in the kitchen. For the price I wanted it carved in front of me! I honestly think they shorted us on the portion we were served. The dining area was crowded, too many tables we could hear the conversations of the tables around us. It has hard to walk through the dining room, I think they tried to fit in as many tables as they could in there. Not a romantic place, better for family and kids as it is loud (due to the crowded dining room). The decor was average. PF CHANGS is definitely a better restaurant for food and atmosphere.

The ladies room was horrible. Paper and overflowing trash cans everywhere. Some people say you should visit the restroom to see how the food and service will be prior to dining. I should have done that, I would have walked right out.

Sports bar was average.

I was not impressed with Yao's, I will not be going back and will tell my friends and family not to bother going.

Good spot, obviously you go there for the name of the restaurant, but the food was surprisingly good. Good service and good lunch menu. I had the curry chicken which usually a h*t or miss dish, this was totally a h*t there, their hot and sour soup is good, their spring roll is good as well..

I've been to Yao's a few times now and have always enjoyed the experience. Houston has so many great and authentic places it really is tough to compare. But the food is consistent and very good. It is more expensive than other Chinese food places but the atmosphere and location is top notch. The bar area is great for watching games. It really is a great addition to the west side of town.

I dont know where the Citysearch Editor who wrote the review got the idea that Yaos is a sport-themed restaurant. This is a CHINESE FOOD RESTRAUNT, pure and simple, but it is one of the best Ive ever visited.

The place is wonderfully decorated and accented ( I love the cracked glass motifok maybe thats the sports theme?) The tea service is romantic, the food is ample and delicious, and the service is wonderful.

Ive paid more for Chinese food, but never had the quality and service of Yaos. Ive had so much Chinese in the past, I had been burned out lately, but this place reinvigorated my love for American Chinese food.

Overall great dining experience. The food is wonderful and the portions are large and th price is good. They have a great herbal tea menu that is very different and enjoyale. You can't go wrong dining here, you always get large portios of white meat chicken or jumbo shrmp and the beef is great too. The peking duck is definently worth a try.

The ambiance is great for big or small parties, and the connecting bar is a classy addition. Even the bathrooms are state-of-the-art. I was relieved that this restaurant does NOT have a cheesy and overplayed sports theme. A great spot for inexpensive lunch specials is an added bonus.

Service is impeccable compared with most fine dining restaurant! My favourite is the peking duck and orange beef. First time there and will be back for more! I strongly agree with sscoleman about people complaining as to what food supposed to be authenthic! I brought some chinese friends with me, they are happy as well. The food may be american chinese but with a kick to it! I recommmed everyone to give it a try. We went there for a business dinner and it was fabulous. Love the price and the quality of food! The quality is a lot better than most chinese restaurant in chinatown! In chinatown, the you never expect a good service but here....the best. Gotta try it.

I found it ...finally! Best service I ever had. The price is reasonable. The food is excellent. I do not understand why some chinese claim that it is not authentic enough. Well, what is authentic in this generation. ...considering mixed demographic, food fusion, and different culture marrying into other cultures? ...why complain? They should be experimenting different taste rather than eating the same food all the time. American chinese food..is good as authentic chinese food. I love the food here. The best part is their banquet menu. I was invited to Chinese banquet dinner. I was amazed they offer a lot of food off the menu! I wish they did put it on the menu. All the guests in my party enjoys it as well. Should give it at least a try. Gotta tp try the peking duck!

Before going, you must realize that much of the menu consists of items that are common to Americans, however they are served either in an authentic style or something totally different. I found Mama Yao's Wonton Soup to be pretty good (however it comes very VERY hot) and the General Tso's Chicken comes in great big strips that are incredible. The Chow Mein is also very good. At least worth the try for sure.

Overall, a very average, if not below average, experience. The service was inconsistent and the food was bland (the Vietnamese spring rolls were especially disappointing, the fried rice had large chunks of chicken and lacked much flavor, and Shar Char beef, which was recommended, tasted much like a Chinese buffet item). The highlight was the rose tea. The decor to the restaurant was tasteful with an open floorplan. Do not plan to return.

The first review was pretty accurate when I first visited the restaurant soon after it opened. I've since been back 4 or 5 times and I must say that they have worked all kinks out of the system, from the kitchen to the service. The food is quite good (Peking duck highly recommended), and the ambiance excellent. If youre looking to make you taste buds smile and enjoy a great atmosphere, this is your place, but if you're looking for a bargain mean, try a Hungry Man in the frozen food department of your local grocery.

Pros: parking, duck

I was not impressed. Few of the dishes are authentic. Food was oily, not very fresh and not up to par for the price charged. I've had better Peking duck elsewhere. Was nice to have the duck carved at the table though. If you want chinese food, save your money and go elsewhere for better quality, lower priced food. For american tastes: not recommended. For those who like authentic chinese food: definitely not recommended.

The wait wasn't long for a table, but it took 15-20 mins to get a glass of water and in a restaurant that seats over 440 people, there were only two highchairs. When I asked a manager why? He replied "because we don't encourage customers to bring small children." Judging by I had my 9 month old son with me I was not only mad, but very upset as to never being discriminated against as a parent. We then had to have our food packed in to go boxes so that I could eat it at home where ofcourse we have a highchair. The food is relatively par for the course, not worth $25-$30 a person. Chinatown is about 2 miles away and you'll get faster service, cheaper prices and better food.
