I had my birthday party here last year and it definitely did the trick. I was looking for something a little more dressy than an Irish pub/sports bar, but nothing too pretentious or clubby, and this was a great in between. We got there around 10/10:30 which was early enough to score some couches (crucial for bags and coats) and we danced the night away in the dark bar. Overall I was very pleased and would definitely revisit.

Great bar, awesome tunes and a fun crowd filling the dance floor.

Barman mixes one of the best Apple Martinis in the blink of an eye

id been here once and the muzik was soo good i had a bday party here a few days later. loved it compared to other places that tried to charge me an arm & a leg!! i needed seating for 15 but only got enough chairs for about 6 ppl but we were dancing/at the bar all night so it didnt really matter

i met mad cute boys that night nd the bartenders/bouncer were really cool & nice each time i went. theres an AWESOME pizza place across the street (yummy drunken eats) and near a few other (less fun) clubs. its not in a great barhopping location but i didnt really wanna go anywhere else coz i was having so much fun

Fun, lively and loud...drinks are fairly cheap, bartenders are quick and friendly (especially Jonah!) and the music is great. will be back soon.

I have been to No Malice a few times and it has always been a great place to hang out. On the weekends they have awesome d.j.s and music to dance to, and there is a great energy in the place.

All the staff have always been very friendly, even though it gets really busy. Sometimes i've had to wait to get in, but its always worth it and i've never had to wait too long.

I live in the east village, and i've stopped in a couple times on the weeknights and its been a really relaxed neighborhood feel.
good drinks, good music, good service just about all i need in a place.

A friend of mine was having a birthday thing there. Unfortunately there was a line, but fortunately a couple of his other friends had already arrived and let me jump into line with them. I understand it's a pain to be a bouncer in the city. I've been here 10 years and for the most part I just take it in stride. The whole time the bouncers were hassling the people waiting, organizing us oddly into two parallel lines and telling us not to face each other so it was weird even talking when we were waiting. Not to mention that they didn't even put the people into the two lines in order and thus made some people wait longer than people who got there after them.

When I went to go in with the two people I was waiting with the bouncer pushed me back into the person behind me pretty hard and said "stand back big man." So I just asked if they had any idea how much longer I'd have to wait. Then the other bouncer gets in my face and tells me I can come in when he decides and lets people waiting behind me in. I never did anything aggressive at all. I just left. And that's what I advise of others if they get here and see a line. Move on. The place might be ok, but the bouncers are horrible.

And if you're thinking of having a birthday party here don't. You might be forcing some of your friends to deal with them and it's not even something I'd want for people I don't like.

Terrible place! The bartender charged me 18 bucks for two amstel lights (he said they only had 2 beers and no draught). Then I ordered another 2 amstel lights from another bartender and he charged me 12 dollars. When i closed my tab and left no tip for such ridiculousness, i was asked "did you have a problem with the service." when i told the other bartender what had happened, he just shrugged his shoulders and basically couldn't care less. I won't ever go back.

So I recently moved to NYC and I'd been missing my old watering holes in San Francisco. Nothing around here seemed to make me feel at home. A good friend of mine asked me to come along on a Friday nite to what she called the biggest, baddest hole in the wall bar of all time, the No Malice Palace. While I'm not one to take another's opinion at face value, I was intrigued by the name. As soon as we walked in, I was completely taken by the atmosphere. The dim, red lights. The cozy living room feel. It was awesome!! Not to mention the great music. I'm not sure of the DJ's name (maybe I'll muster up the courage to approach him at some point) but he's as cute as he is talented! Hiphop, funk, reggae and even the occasional freestyle joint fill the air as the bartenders make you feel like you've been visiting them for years. Thank you No Malice! You'll be seeing me again and again!

I just can't get enough of the NO Malice Palace. Every weekend I mean to go somewhere else but always find myself back here. Its my cheers of the East Village as far as the comfortable, welcoming, layed back, unpretentious vibe goes, but with super hot bartenders, and kickin hip hop. Drinks are good and strong, a real ba*g (wow! very strict rules about language on this web site) for your buck. Service is fast and friendly, (not to mention the staff seems to be having as much fun as the crowd, and did I mention they're real easy on the eyes). You're sure to have a great time here, and if you don't, just stay home the next time!

last week i had one of the most enjoyable experiences, in my NY city bar career. I tend to go out to spots on a regular basis and at the no malice palace i found great blend of hip hop, and reggae, a bit of other stuff. It was pretty busy and when i looked at the bar i was a bit nervous. thinking it would take a long time to get a drink, but i was in and out in know time. i stayed practically the whole night. leaving cause my peeps were ready to go, im assuming exhaution from the dancing. Recommendations on this spot were true, and i had a great time. They'll definetely see me again.

The No Malice Palace has always been one of my favorite local spots in the East Village. Its comfortable, well-designed and staffed with friendly (and s*xy) bartenders. During the week it's the perfect spot to chill with friends either at the bar or on one of the sofas (one comes complete with a crackling, fake fire). There's also an outdoor patio for smokers who don't want to block the sidewalk.

They have DJs on Friday and Saturday nights playing old school hip hop and that's when the place gets totally jammed. It's a friendly, good-looking crowd and the sound system is way above-average. What more can you ask for?

Now they just installed a flat-screen TV over the bar which is a no no in my book but they keep it off most of the time and it's the only thing I can think of that I don't love about No Malice. When you go, ask for Phil - the owner. He's a friendly fella with ice-blue eyes and a booming laugh. All in all - one of the best East Village bars. Period. Another bonus: the taco place next door is awesome.

After seeing all the good reviews on citysearch, I went there on a Saturday night with some friends. We got there around 2am, were expecting the place to be packed. However, it was probably 80% full and no one was dancing. The crowd was rather on the sketchy side. The music was good though and drinks were cheap.

I've ended up at this place accidentally three times so far for parties. After the first, I wouldn't have gone again if I realized it was the same place. It seems constantly crowded and way too dark. Drinks are overpriced for their size, pour, and quality. I don't know what everyone here found so alluring about the atmosphere - the place is pitch black aside from some lounge seats, and any time the DJ found something danceable that didn't sound like it came off of "Club Hits 2000", it was too crowded to actually dance.

After the third time I showed up here, I memorized the address so I wouldn't make the same mistake again.

Pros: I have to say, despite its other drawbacks, the service was friendly and fast

Cons: Just about everything else.

The music, mood and drinks are right. Bartenders are great with ocassional buybacks and there are comfy lounges to sink into.

I can only say great things about No Malice Palace. I have had 3 parties there in the last year and every time I'm more and more impressed. The dancing is great with a live DJ all the time. There is an outdoor seating area where you can cool off and carry a conversation on with friends. The bar staff are pleasant to work with and they always are good looking.

I recently read an article about it in New York Magazine (nymag DOT com/bestofny/fun/2007/28817/) and couldn't agree more with what they say. HIGHLY Recommend!!!!

LOVED this place. The staff was wonderful - no pretension at all - same with the crowd. Was a little b & t at the beginning of the night, but by midnight, they were gone. The music was EXCELLENT - Evan is an awesome dj...
I know the general review is that it's not a great dancing spot - I disagree. Plenty of room to wiggle your donkey(they wont let me curse)...

You know what? I've only been to this place 2 times, and both times were a bucketful of fun. I like this bar. I've lived in Alphabet City for 3 years but only discovered the aptly named No Malice Palace recently, and in addition to having a great name, the staff is nice, the people look good, and the atmosphere is a refreshing balance of hip and friendly. Pay the Palace a visit, I say.

Went here on Saturday night. Not very impressed. It was sooo dark and loud and way too crowded, you need supersonic earplugs and night vision goggles just to get by. Was glad to leave. The only decent thing was the drink prices. $10 for two beers and a cranberry & soda.

You would never know that behind a green light on a side street in the East Village lay this gem. The bar has a huge back space and backyard. The DJs are always playing new and old school favorites and the bartenders are friendly and attentive. It can be slow on weeknights and hit or miss on weekends, but it has great space to lounge if that is your goal. The drink prices are comparable to Manhattan.

Before it filled up on Saturday night, this place looked promising -- comfortable setting, nice lighting, lots of room, but then it filled up with obnoxious drunk 22 year olds in lip gloss and halter tops. Horrible DJ, ridiculously overpriced drinks -- $4 PBR?! -- and horrible atmosphere. If you're looking for a laid back bar to drink with your friends, go elsewhere, but if you're looking for a meat market, you'll love it.

This loungy intimate space heats up every weekend night with a live DJ, stiff drinks and beautiful faces. I's a good idea to meet up with friends on the early side before the place gets too crowded. I often come on weekday nights when there is not so many people. Plus, the bartenders are hot! Try Sunday, Monday or Thursday nights, you'll know what I mean... Overall it's a great place to have different kinds of experiences depending on when you stop in.

no name on the joint. Look for the green light. This place was packed by 1am like most other posters said, but you can find places to chill with a lot of space. Most people just hang out towards the front, move to the back where the couches are to chill.
Drinks made well, music was alright, thought it was a tape for a while.

perfect hangout. the bartenders remember your name, buy you drinks, and chat away. plus, everyone is pretty easy on the eyes. come before 11 on thurs-sat: otherwise, it's packed with people from uptown looking to slum. they're annoying; the bar isn't.

I don't remember the atmosphere cuz it was to darn crowded to see anything. I think there was a party going on. And they let practically anyone in.

No Malice Palace is a great time! Very cool staff and the crowd is very friendly every time I have even been there. The drinks can get pricey, but they tend to be stiff. Get there after 11:00 when the crowd picks up, and your eyes will have a lot to enjoy. Lots of beautiful young ladies for the guys, and attractive hipsters for the girls. Just wish the music varied a little more. They play tons of hip hop, then a little trip hop (which is awesome, but not played frequent enough). Bring your friends, but tell them to keep it hush hush...dont wanna ruin a good thing.

I read all of the reviews here and went there for someone's birthday with great anticipation. Unfortunately, I did not have a good time at all. The atmosphere to me, seemed pretty blah. It was one of those places that makes you feel tired. The music was up and down, sometimes the hip hop selections were just not that good (also contribuiting to that sleepy feel)...oh well, the service was good, never waited for a drink.
