Totally hidden in an unexpected location. The store is very simple and OLD. However, their doughnuts are great and they use only fresh and or organic ingredients.

It is slightly on the pricey side. Each doughnut is $2 and above. We got the Black Out and Strawberry Filling Doughnuts and they are very good and pretty big.

I am glad to be able to come to this historic doughnut place. Now they have become a foodie spot so there are visitors all the time. The creme brulee tiny doughnuts are great too!

Interesting combo but this is not something I would buy on a reg. basis just because of the price. It's not sooo spectacular that I would consistantly shell out this kind of money. Don't get me wrong, they are good and orig. Very dense.

Ignore the haters, they would hate the bread Jesus brought them from heaven. The staff is fun. The experience is fun. I am taking my 83 year old mother in a couple of weeks. Chicago girl - so I know it will be a big sell to NYC. I expect Doughnut Plant will help.

From what I've read here, it's sad to hear about the doughnuts and bad attitudes. When I went, his tres leches were superb, and I even got to spend some time chatting with Mark Israel who was nice and polite as can be. Wishing a good experience for those who visit!

Saw this guy on throwdown with Bobby Flay and was so turned off at his bad attitude. What a giant baby! Dude, get over yourself! The place is dirty and the doughnuts are a dissapointment.

The doughnuts are OK at best. This guy has a severe attitude problem and doesn't deserve loyal customers. His appearance on Bobby Flays Throwdown is a perfect example of how miserable he is.

The yeast-type doughnuts are alright... it is not difficult to find a cheaper one that's as good. The cake-type doughnuts are amazing, and worth a trip. Especially blackout if you are a chocolate lover. I wonder how they make Blackout so moist, rich, cookie-crumbly with some hint of liquid chocolate WITHOUT using eggs! If you wanna know about my experience, the approximate price and see some pictures, visit iconofreflection.blogspot.c0m/2009/05/nycs-doughnut-plant.html

Pros: transfat free, preservative free, no eggs/artificial flavour

Cons: pricey, staff attitude

Revision: Staff is still rude, more so now. I regret spending so much money on this place over the years and referring people to it. I'm finally tired of the check out girls' attitude. She over charged me (again) and almost didn't give me 10 dollars back as my change and when I told her she had made a mistake (I was nicer about it than on this post) she rolled her eyes and sighed. The doughnuts are just OK now, nothing special. I'm very disappointed in this place and they raised the price of the doughnuts. Totally not worth it for almost 3 bucks a pop. Oh, and there is no cash register so if you do make the mistake of going, make sure you have time to sit there and calculate the amounts yourself or the house will keep more of your hard earned cash. And careful not to ask for a box unless you want to get more attitude from the morons they have working at checkout.

Ok, now I read the other reivews before I wrote this. Now lets not even consider dunkin donuts as a comparible donut. DD's is nothing but caulk with a little sugar. Anyway, I'm from Southern California and we have huge yeast, soft, fresh, and glazed just right donuts. I just everyone's glaze donuts to judge weather or not they can make a donut. That be said. They have a good variety. I got the Glaze, Tres Leche, and Organic Orange. I could not eat the tres leche (cake donut), and it was soaked with leche...like a the cake.. (I just can't do milk). The orange was good, and so was the glaze. NO DD's, not even close, but they are not like California at all. They are fresh (lite, but heavy at the same time) has that homemade feeling, warm, you can get a variety... They are OK, i would not go back, but i would eat them again.

The last time I was in New York, a friend who is familiar with my love of doughnuts recommended I try out this place. Now I have eaten a few (thousand) doughnuts in my time, all over the country, but never have I found anything better than this place. The guy at the counter was exceptionally friendly and helpful with his suggestions, and everything I tried was REALLY good, so much so that I made a couple of return trips while I was in town. The coconut glazed with coconut cream was my absolute favorite! If you love doughnuts as much as I do, you owe it to yourself to make the trek to 379 Grand Street.

Haven't really tried the donuts. Probably won't. I think this guy was the worst I've ever seen on Bobby Flay's show. He had such a bad attitude. Doesn't he realize that Bobby wouldn't have picked him if he didn't think he was already the best? This is free press. Take advantage of it. OMG!!!! He blew it. His little sissy attitude lost him a lot of business, even if he doesn't want to admit it. Oh, and by the way....word of mouth advertisement goes a long way.

I just read the two most recent reviews here and am reminded of George Bernard Shaw's quote: "Do not do unto others as you would expect they should do unto you: Their tastes may not be the same." Where do I start? At a time in NYC's history when it's more and more difficult to find reality, original ideas and genuine people behind a business and not a corporation -- the Doughnut Plant is an oasis! The reviewer saw the owner in the bakery? I see him there, too. He WORKS there and usually he's exhausted, but never has he not been friendly. (I don't doubt he rolled his eyes at the reviewer's mother, but it's a long story: he had a really bad experience with that TV show.) Anyway, I love just about everything at the Doughnut Plant. And I like making the trek to the bakery instead of buying them at Joe's or Dean and Deluca because it seems they always experiment with new flavors. The guy beind the counter is always suggesting someting new for me to try "it's SOO good..." And the cake doughtnuts? And the jelly doughnuts? And the hot chocolate? Too bad those people had a bad experience. Let them go to those chain "donut" shops and be miserable there. And long live the Doughnut Plant.

Cons: I always eat too much!

Ok so the doughtnuts were good, but neither I nor anyone else that I was with will ever go back. If it wasn't for Bobby Flay's Throwdown I never would have known that this place even existed - and I'm pretty sure a lot of his business comes from his television appearances...but the guy doesn't appreciate it a bit. The owner was actually there when we were and my mom said to him "Hey, I saw you on Throwdown and I just had to come in and try." The owner's response - "Oh good" (might I please add that this was said sarcastically and with an extreme eye roll). It was so bad we actually almost said something to him about his nasty attitude and almost didn't buy a donut...but then we figured we had already walked to the middle of nowhere and we weren't going there for no reason.

So basically...if you think that someone who owns a service business should actually care about their customers, don't step in the door. Go to your local Dunkin Donuts - they'll actually have a smile on their face.

Every now and then I am lucky enough to witness something so perfect it cannot possibly be improved. Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, the view of the land from the top of Siena's Torre del Mangia, the view of the sky from the crater of Mount Bromo in Java, and now...a fresh strawberry yeast doughnut from the little shop at 379 Grand. I will never visit NYC again without making a trip to the Doughnut Plant, I am so completely in awe.

I went on a Sunday afternoon, it was pretty crowded at the time. It's a tiny place that fits probably 10 people max. Their donuts are on display and they had a pretty good variety - blueberry jelly doughnuts, cinnamon rolls, hazelnut, lemon, tres leches, chocolate, etc. They're 2 bucks a pop but most of them are much larger than your average Dunkin' Donuts-sized doughnuts. There's two types - cakey and doughy. They're both really good - my fave was the jelly. Very fresh, very delicous, fast service. Coffee was mediocre and not very hot (self-serve station, also only milk and no cream).

The experience was dreadful and terribly dissapointing. My boyfriend and I made a trip there to try out the famous donuts. He had the blackout donut which had an oily aftertaste. It's almost as if it had been fried in old oil that was used for churros because it tasted more like churros than chocolate. Not only that, it wasn't even moist but rather crumbly! I ordered the coconut glaze with coconut cream - it wasn't anything special and it gave off a bad aftertaste too. We were so disgusted we threw the whole thing out. I don't know what the hype is about... maybe people don't know what good donuts taste like. Now I have a greater appreciation for krispy kreme (and even dunkin donuts).

Doughnuts are gooey, greasy messes. Flavors are creative but the dough is poorly made and the doughnuts suffer for it. If I want to clog my arteries, I want to do it with food that tastes good. The Tres Leches doughnut is edible, however, if you can get it warm.

The best doughnut I've ever had. Light, delicious, not greasy, and I didn't get that sugar high you get with Krispy Kreme or Dunkin Donuts. Worth every cent. 1.75 is not too much at all for this donut -- unless you normally eat 5 or 6, but I don't see how you could, these are like a fabulous dessert.

Their donuts are huge and not too heavy, the glaze is always delicious! If you've been raised on Krispy Kreme then you probably won't like this, but it's well worth the money. Also try their churros, they're great and cheaper than the donuts.

The dougnuts here are ridiculously good. Unlike anything else and the guy who was working there was really nice too. I like that it's small and unpretentious and thought the coffee was good. The dougnuts are around $2.00 a piece, but probably twice as big as a regular doughnut and 100 times better. Try the tres leches. It's more like a whole dessert than a doughnut. The guy was really happy to help us find just the right doughnut for our overwhelmedness...reminiscent of coffee shop empolyees in Amsterdam.

The Doughnut Plant makes top notch homemade doughnuts of unbelievable quality. The doughnuts are tasty and the toppings are for lack of a better word gourmet. Just mindbendingly great, quite frequently they change seasonally as newer fresher fruits become available. I drop by every two to three weeks to see what is new and to pick up a bag. Come early in the day as they sell through and the pickings get scanty as the day wears on.

I decided to try out this place after hearing about it in many magazines. I arrived late on a snuday night so there were only 5 donuts left. All they had available was orange donuts?? I never had an orange donut before so I gave it a shot. I was pleasently surprised at the taste. The orange wasn't overwelming but the frosting and the consistency was perfect. Give it a shot :-)

I tried this place out today and it was wonderful! I had a chocolate doughnut and a key lime doughnut. Both were excellent. I'm still thinking about how tangy that key lime one was. Very inventive! Here's my question. Where did all the doughnut holes go? They didn't have any for sale. What do they do with them? Hmmmm. I also wish they had better seating and a better coffee service. They keep the milk so cold that by the time I pour it in my coffee, my coffee's too cold. Just being picky. Really excellent place.

Pros: good parking, easy to get to, not crowded

Cons: not enough room, need more selection

I have been meaning to get down to this infamous place for a while...but I rarely go that far down Grand St. Thank god I got to try it this weekend. They crank out some good size, extra sweet, and extremely flavorful doughnuts. I am not even a huge doughnut fan, however if you have a chance to grab one of these, don't pass it up. They were so light that I was not loaded down after eaten one.
