Vets are not always animal lovers. You have to do a lot of horrible things in veterinary school - something I found out when I was considering doing this as a profession - and too often, by the time you graduate, you've seen too much to feel for the animals.

But there are exceptions - and Dr. Kaufman is one of them. I've taken my cats to his office many times, and they've always been treated with great care and love by him and the rest of his staff. They've been given great consideration as living beings who feel and think, not as inanimate objects or the property of their owners.

Dr. Kaufman is also one of the very few veterinary doctors in New York who does house calls. Though house calls are a bit more expensive than office visits, they are often a godsend to pet owners - a doctor's visit is always a stressful event both for the cat and the owner, and it can be made a lot less stressful if it's conducted in the cat's home, among familiar things and smells.

I've gone to a few other vets - some who were closer to my house and a little more convenient to get to, some that were a little cheaper. But Dr. Kaufman is my favorite vet - and I think my cats hate him the least of all the other vets too, which is saying a lot!

PROS: Great service, fair prices, house calls.
CONS: House calls are a bit expensive.
