I don't know when Ann was last at Turtle Back Zoo, because my husband and I took a chance after reading her review, and found a wonderful zoo. We have frequented many zoos around the world, and this zoo is very special and enjoyable. We did not see any animals that were not in good shape. Each enclosure was well taken care of and the animals were given plenty of space and have a respectable distance from the visitors. The monkeys have enviable outdoor enclosures (more attractive and spacious than our local zoo) and they appeared very happy when we saw them. The gardens were extremely beautiful, and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute we were there. We will make the trip there again (2 hours for us) It was absolutely worth it.

The zoo is clean and the staff is friendly BUT many of the exhibits were just plain sad. The Red Panda was depressed and lonely; being by itself it needs another of its kind with him and having only a rope and a box to perch on, I wanted to cry for it. The Squirrel monkeys (3) fared worse off with an indoor exhibit that consisted of an empty concrete room with fading illustrated trees that were painted on the walls (no real nor plastic trees) and 3 ropes to perch on. One of the Squirrel monkeys had a bald tail--a sure sign of severe stress and a second monkey had bald patches on his tail. The petting zoo was also sad. The goats needed shearing and were overweight due to the many children feeding them continuously throughout the day, the horse had a weeping wound on its underbelly, the pig was way too overweight, the alpacas also needed shearing--these are cold climate animals and in the hot sun they were uncomfortable in their heavy coats. The penguin exhibit also needs to have a face lift. This zoo needs to be visited by the ASPCA in order to assess the conditions these animals are in. Otherwise, the grounds were lovely and I enjoyed the free-roaming Peacocks. Also, they allow outside food to be brought in which is a plus.

This is a solid zoo which will give you about 3 hours of good old fashioned animal gawking. They have some cool animals on display which I've never seen before and I've been to many zoos in my day. Prairie dogs, capybaras, and also this interesting reptile in their new Reptile World which looks like it can walk (on the rocks underwater) and swim. The signs are very informative and it was just an overall good time. Don't expect the Bronx Zoo but it is still a must see if you are in the area.

They have 500 animals or maybe more, wolves, penguins, reptiles, birds. Children love this place and love
pony rides, petting zoo and train ride. Zoo is located in South Montain reservation. It is easy to find. I love spending Sunday there and I am still not sure who loves more, my kids or me. Fall is a great time of a year to go there. It is truy a recreational place and very educational also. They have lots of special events. Admission price is not too bad and it is worth to pay it for so much fun.

Anybody in New Jersey has to go here atleast once. Especially if you have a little one. This zoo cannot compare to one in the big city but for a local New Jersey zoo it is okay.

Not a huge zoo like philadelphia or the bronx, but a great place to take the kids fo the day. Kept as clean as a zoo could be kept, the animals look like they are well-cared for.

This zoo is a perfect day trip for those with children. They have a cute little train ride along the reservior and also a newly installed farm area. The price is very affordable and the atmosphere is wonderful. They offer various classes for children and have daily hands-on demonstrations in the reptile room. The zoo is hilly so bring your walking shoes and pack a lunch if wish; there is huge picnic area.

Turtle Back Zoo is a great place to take the kids, and adults will have fun as well. Very easy to get to, located right off route 280 in Essex County. Huge free parking lot and the prices couldn't be cheaper. $7 for adults and $3 for children 2-12. Plus there's always a coupon in the Entertainment Book or Kids Stuff Book.

This is a small zoo but you can spend at least 2 hours there, walking around to see the animals and just enjoying the day. We saw penguins frolicking in their pond, llamas sleeping in the shade and then we went to the petting zoo. 25 cents will buy you a handful of pet food and you can feed the pigs, goats, sheeps and chickens.

At the end of our visit we took a 10 minute ride on the small train. The kids loved this, as did we. A great breeze and a ride in the shade after all the walking in the sun. Lots of fun for the whole family!
