A previous review dubbed this cool old movie house "World Class". While it surely isn't that, it is a quality place to take in a movie, and absolutely beats the local mega-plex.

Chairs are still poor (they're not "stadium" per the previous review, they're uncomfortable old ones with poor back support), though, the sound system lacks, and the neighborhood doesn't give one many reasons to come early or stay late. The Thai restaurant across the street is OK, though.

For something more approximating "World Class" in a retro theater, try the outstanding Uptown Theater, Washington, D.C., which is far superior in most every respect to the Senator, and has varied and quality pre/post movie options in fun Cleveland/Woodley Park. It is right on Metro's red line.

The theater features stadium seating with reclining seats. The screen is huge and they use the extra large film which makes the movies cleaner and more crisp picture. It's an old style theater unlike the multiplexes of today. And since it's centered in Baltimore they try to feature movies that have Baltimore in them in some fashion. Outside the sidewalk is decorated with the titles of movies with Baltimore connections that were shown in the theater.

PROS: Old Style Movie Theater with large film
CONS: Higher priced than normal movies and harder to park

The Senator theater was restored ten or 20 years ago to its former glory and is a fun place to see movies. The owner often will talk about the movie before it starts and they show old cartoons and newsreals before the main feature. John Waters' movies always premiere here, I think. The popcorn is good. Just don't sit behind someone with big hair.

Such a charming place with an air of yesteryear, you simply must go see a show here. The architecture and atmosphere simply put that of other theaters to shame! Reasonably priced and conveinantly located, I highly reccomend! The experience is great!

This is truly a Baltimore landmark...it's one of the few great big theaters still in use. it's definitely the place to go see a great movie...and the the place all Bltimore related films premiere. It's been improved over the years and offers the quality Dolby sound system the newer ones, but his has the architectural charm the others are lacking...

This is the best unique theatre in the area! Defiantely worth the price of a ticket to see a movie there. Especially worth it for large debut movies like Star Wars!

The Senator Theater is a must see for anyone wanting to claim residency in Baltimore. It has the air of a live stage theater, with ornate scrollwork and lush seating. The lobby and snack bar and even the restrooms all contribute to the overall air, giving excitement to the usually pedestrian activity of movie-going. The Senator only has one screen and runs both first-runs and classics, especially those by native sons like John Waters. Parking is kind of a hassle (your best bet is usually to park at the Staples down the street), but it's worth it!

The Senator is one of the few old style one-screen movie theaters still operating in Baltimore. It reigns as the place where movies stage openings in the city. Outside there are sidewalk tiles with designs from each movie that opened there (lots of John Waters stuff). Inside, you'll find occasional art exhibits, a huge orangey-red theater, and a resident dog who loves to play catch in front of the concession stand. A great place to see a movie!
