Some of the best street performers in NY are here on the weekends. We have been watching "Tic' N' Tac" perform here for years! They, and others, have acrobatics and humor for all! The Kids Love this park, and it's one of our favorites as well, a must see on any weekend-Holiday! (Performers are not always around weekdays.)

This is as close as New York City gets to an organic public gathering space. Adjacent to NYU's facilities, Washington Square Park attracts more than undergraduates and tourists to its rickety benches and competitive chess matches. During summers past, I've enjoyed catching Gorilla Rep's annual production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and the various acrobatic acts that take place in and around the fountain. (Take note: This may be Gorilla Rep's last year!) The street vendor booksellers who set up tables within a stone's throw often have great buys on classics and pulp.

PROS: Pretty, Playground, Entertaining

Washington Sq. Park used to be an insane park! There were a mix of mad artists, homeless ravers, and drug addicts. Despite the occassional muggings, the park provided an interesting ecclectic mix of NY and there was ALWAYS something to see. Nowadays, it's more NYU - which is to say, there are a lot more police and a curfew. There are no rasta poets slammin' or insane writers scribblin' away on a napkin.

this Park is very famous as it is located near NY University and in the famous East Village. However, there is not much to do except people-watch. And, as it is located near a drug-infested area, the people are not the greatest to watch.

Washington Square Park is simply a classic of the old and new Greenwich Village. It has much more character and charm than the larger parks in the city, and is within walking distance anywhere in the village. It's the perfect meeting place to start a day in the village.

The fountain is especially wonderful in the summer, a perfect cool down during heat waves. There's always places in this park to be in the center of performers and noise, or to find a quiet spot of one's own.

Conveniently located off 5th Avenue, this park is a great place for New School University and NYU students to hang out between classes. There is plenty of seating in the park, some dog parks, some playgrounds, chess tables, and of course the Washington Arch. Only complaint is it can get a bit crowded and there seems to be more concrete than green.
