I purchased a freezer several months ago. It failed. Waited all day for a repairman, never came, though after phone calls that left me feeling concerned/frustrated with owners attitude there where no guarantees of when or if a repairman would show up. NO statement about if they could even come the next day. Eventually owner called and was willing to come himself that evening. By then I had called another appliance repair service who was not only willing to come that evening. The appliance repairman told me they had welded a mismatching older coil onto the freezer. He showed me the welds and the Freon leaking form these welds. Although it could be repaired it would be $300-400. We bought a new one for $75 LESS than we paid for the POORLY, IMPROPERLY repaired USED freezer!!! I felt the owner was nonprofessional when it came to handling the repairman situation. There were some other issues that were of concern to me but I will write those of to honest human error. I truly hate to complain, I far prefer to write positive reviews. I think this is the second negative reviews I have given in 10 years. I felt I just needed to speak up in this situation and tried hard to identify facts and feelings separately so each of you can make your own decision.

Landlord here, 51 older units, so that many stoves and refrigerators, as well as 5-8 washers and dryers at given times to keep operational. Steve and Gary have, over the last couple decades, been generous with maintenance and trouble shooting tips. They are my default go-to guys when I have a problem. I've bought used appliances from them as well as lots of parts. When something needs fixing, they are the men.

My experience is mostly face-to-face and me doing DIY with their advice and parts, but for that they are simply the best I've found. Highest recommendation used as I do.

I worked for JL's Appliance (Gary & Steve Lawerance) as there outside Service Tech from Aug. 08 to Oct. 09. This is the most ripe off Appliance company I've ever seen. I have been in the Appliance Service Industry for 35 yrs. These boys claim to be Christians, horse pucky. All they care about is MONEY. I've heard them talk about customers, not to there faces of course, things I would be ashamed to repeat. Anyway, they charge $69.00 for a Service Call, which is I think the highest rate in Salem, Or. of Appliance Repair work. A higher rate is OK if you give Quality Service, but the Service Person they hired after me hasn't held down a job in 15 yrs.. So how can they expect people to pay a quality rate for sub standard work. Their inside Refrigeration Tech., the guy that does most of the compressor work, isn't even certified to do refrigeration, just a guy they hired off the streets. Their compressor change outs in the shop cost them at most $50.00, (aftermarket parts), then they charge $450.00 for the job, so you tell me who's ripping off who? They claim to use quality OEM parts, well they do in some cases, but they buy alot of aftermarket parts at alot cheaper prices and charge OEM prices for them. Christians, I think not. These aftermarket parts are low standard, when I was there, I refused to use them, maybe that's why they let me go, I wouldn't play there game. Then they denided my unemployment. In todays economy, with hardly any jobs to be had, I'm without any income, I have a wife & 3 kids, what am I suppose to do. I made this company thousands of dollars and this is how they repay me. I wish everyone in there area could read this before they deside who they want in there homes to do there repairs

I have been going to JL's Appliance Store in West Salem for about 10 yrs. for all my appliances. The service is great and everyone is so kind and very knowledgeable on helping solve problems. The owners have been there over 25 years with excellent service - I really couldn't ask for any better service. I am very happy with JL'S Appliance and would suggest everyone go see for their selves.

I have a gas dryer that has stopped heating (and therefore also stopped drying) I am a renter, so I called my property manager who called JL's Appliance and set up a service visit. Nine days and three service calls later, they have still not repaired my dryer. I have spent over a week working my schedule around their time-frame and watching my clean laundry dwindle away to nothing. I attempted to call them during business hours this afternoon when I found my dryer was STILL not functioning but the phone just rang and rang, no answer, no voicemail, nothing. I now have to go ANOTHER weekend without a dryer while I wait for Monday morning so I can call for my fourth service appointment. Unfortunately for me I have to use the company my property manager is contracted with or I would definitely call someone else. These people are completely incompetent.

I frequently use Google to find resources for fixing, repairing and pricing things and it generally points me in the right direction. Unfortunately, I can not say it did this time. JLs appliance may provide excellent service when they actually do something, but all they did for our family was show up, move our refrigerator forward a few feet, call a warranty number and charge us $60. When asked why we were being charged $60, the service tech, Brian, indicated he performed a diagnostic on a part even he admitted was concealed within the unit. The "warranty service" he called in will have to conduct a diagnostic as well, as Brian apparently accomplished nothing.

We called JLs requesting an explanation and managed to speak with the owner of the company--which under normal circumstances would be an excellent indication of quality. Unfortunately, the owner was not much more help than Brian; in fact, he transferred us to Brian directly and Brian basically taunted us over the phone by saying if we did not wish to be charged we should not have called.

We eventually just asked Brian what service he provided and he said he called the warranty number and that if we didn't expect to be charged, we should have called ourselves. It used to be you could call a repair firm, request repair service and the individual who visited your home would be knowledgable, polite and generally a person of integrity; perhaps we caught JLs Appliance service over the wrong couple of weeks, but we observed none of these traits when dealing with them.

We strongly suggest investigating any other options before considering JLs Appliance service. Even on the worst of days and under the worst of circumstances, customers should be treated with respect and provided a reasonable explanation of the reason they are being billed. We received neither of these courtesies and were forced to begin the entire process over again, but $60 short.

This small little store on edgewater is easy to miss, they have new to you washers, dryers and fridges. They also make house calls to repair your appliances. I have an ancient washer and dryer, and both times Brian has come out to fix it. He will tell you ahead of time if it is time to retire the old washer or fix it, both times, they came the same day and my bill was under 100 dollars!!!

PROS: Same day, honest service
CONS:
