Billy's cupcakes were one of the contenders at my 18-cupcake-store blind tasting party and it wasn't rated very highly on the scoring sheets. I decided to give it another try, this time at the Chelsea store itself. The interior is cute and reminds me of my grandmother's kitchen with the kitschy wallpaper. And it smelt just like that too.

Upon the staff's recommendation, we got the pumpkin cheesecake, which was really really good with the whipped cream. It was a little harder than I expected but the it tasted just as you think it would - pumpkin pie with cheesecake. We almost ordered another one, but decided to try to vanilla cupcake instead, upon the staff's recommendation.

Unfortunately, my verdict still stood by what we rated it at the party. The frosting was way too sugary, I could
almost taste the sugar grains in there. The cake itself was really dry and didn't have the moist fluffiness that you would expect in a good cupcake. I didn't even finish my half.

In short, the other cakes on the counter looks pretty good, but I wouldn't get cupcakes here at all.
snob now.

Pros: Pumpkin cheesecake

Cons: Cupcakes are actually not good at all

In a city where service is king,I find it hard to believe Billy's is still in business. Their average cupcakes are not worth being belittled and snapped at my their surly staff. (I'm English, polite is in my blood - I did nothing to antagonise these wankers, bar having the temerity to enter their store)

The plain jane vanilla and chocolate cupcakes were not very good. They fall into the same trap as most NYC bakeries. Overly sweet icing with stale cake. I sampled almost every flavor. They had the worst red velvet cupcake. The only flavor I liked was the bananna. The service was not very good. The staff is very rude and rushed me. It seemed weird since I was the only person in the store. I was surprised because I had a very big order.

I have been to Billy's several times and each time I walk away wondering why I came back. In a time when the cupcake is king of the hill Billy's is at the bottom of the heap. I love a good cupcake but at Billy's prefer the the banana cream pie of everything I have tried. The coconut cake would have been perfect except for the meringue topping is just wrong. I've had it twice and both times it did not sit well. Most of all each time I have been there the staff has been preoccupied. There always seem to be lots of young people behind the counter but every time I am there I feel like I am interrupting social time and putting them out of their way to assist.

Even though from the outside Billy's looks so inviting and the enticing aromas inside seem to beckon decadence... I say walk on by and go to one of the many other better bakeries in the city.

While their cakes are amazing, their service is another story. Every time I have ordered a cake from them, they have screwed something up. One time, they forgot to mention to me that they would be closed on the day that I was scheduled to pick up my cake(and they didn't bother to tell me this until it was too late to order a cake from a different bakery). Another time, they misplaced my cake and didn't even seem too concerned about it. This is New York City; service is everything. I think that I'll support a more organized and better managed bakery from now on. I recommend that you do the same.

I've only been to Billy's once, but they definitely had the best cupcakes I've tried in NYC (Magnolia, Buttercup,Crumbs, someplace in Penn Station...)
For me it's about the frosting: or the fact that this is the only cupcake place I've found that doesn't completely overwhelm the cupcake with the frosting.
The cake is yummy, the frosting is yummy, and they seem to be baking all day so you can get 'em fresh. My favorite was vanilla/vanilla.

I liked the cupcakes I got here, although if you want specialty cupcakes, crumbs is better.

Did a bakery tour a while back and thought I had gone back to Magnolias by accident. Cute shop. Same food. Very Average. I expected much more because of all the hype. If this is one of the best in NY I feel sorry for you. My food was ok nothing special.

The cupcakes here are worth the hype. I have been all over NYC and these are the best. Forget Magnolia and take a trip to this smaller and much nicer shop. I have also tried the cookies and various cakes and they are delicious. I ordered a birthday cake and it was a great dessert ending to the party. Enjoy the experience and visit Billy's.

The shop is cute but small. Although I went in about 30 minutes after they opened there was no red velvet cupcakes. When I asked if they were making any I was told "maybe later today." I tried a chocolate cupcake with vanilla icing and a vanilla with vanilla icing. I assumed because there were only a few chocolate cupcakes left that someone bought a lot before I came. After tasting the hard brick they were passsing off as a chocolate cupcake I think it's safe to assume these were at least 1-2 days old. YUCK!! I had to throw it out. The vanilla cupcake was tasty but nothing special. I won' t go out of my way to come back here.

I stood there a while before the staff waited on me. They knew I was there but just kept avoiding me. Finally, I asked for red velvet cupcakes - they said they were out (it was 10 minutes after they opened). I saw a tray of them but was told it was for a special order. I ended up getting vanilla and chocolate cupcakes - the icing was watery and did not hold up well. The icicing was not rich tasting. The cake fell apart easily. I would not go back to this shop.

From what I hear, the owner of the store worked at Magnolia's Bakery, and then stole the recipe to open his own version of Magnolia's bakery... The cupcakes tastes and looks exactly the same as Magnolias, they call it something else of course, but I always just order it by vanilla vanilla or chocolate vanilla like they do at Magnolias. Besides the cute interior designs of the bakery, i found nothing too special about this place. The icing on the cupcakes for me were a little bit too sweet, the cake is a little dry so order a cup of milk to go along with it...

I found ordering for corporate birthdays and events a really frustrating experience. Magnolia and Cupcake Cafe have well honed staff able to take your order efficiently and pleasantly. The manager of Billy's was pretty rude and arrogant when I tried to place an order. While I really enjoy the in-store Billy's experience and of course their sweets..there are other, much more efficient places to order top notch baked goods for delivery. I don't think I will order from there again the next time we have another office birthday party.

I think i first discovered this place back in 2004. Had i rated this place back then I would have gave them 5 stars, but will only give them 4 stars for now. At the time I LOVED the place....Great Cupcakes....Great Services.....I actually stopped going to Magnolias because I prefer going to Billy's Bakery. Since then the only things that I have tried are the cupcakes of all flavors, Red Velvet Cake, Peanut Butter Chocolate Pie, the refrigerator cake. All of which are really Good....The only thing with the Refrigerator Cake is that is taste best when eaten right away. I also tried their chocolate chip cookies....it was just so...so. The last time i was out their was around the summer...maybe September......around the few months surrounding that time...The cupcakes have not been quiet up to par......and the customer service a give or take. Some days really nice staff...and other days...there are some that could been friendlier. Don't get me wrong I will still continue to come to this place. I am still addicted to their Red Velvet Cake and Cupcakes. I also appreciate the cute job they did on my husbands B-Day cake. Overall, Come!! The treats are tasty here :)

Pros: Satisfies your sweet tooth, Bakegoods last and are still good after bringing them home

I took my friend to Billy's for her birthday. I was disappointed by the rude service and attitude their cashier girl gave us. I was told there was NO red velet cupcakes, while a whole tray of them were staring me in the face. Our cupcakes were not in a box but shoved in a paper bag, where the frosting was smeared all over. We asked her for napkins and she ignored our question, until she finished frosting her cupcakes. When she finally did acknowledge us, she wripped off some paper towels and and chucked them to us. When my pregnant friend politely asked if she could kindly use their bathroom, she was told to go to the corner restaurant instead. Cup cukes were Ok, not worth giving our patronage.

I was lamenting the changes at my favorite bakery when a friend suggested I try Billy?s! Glad I did! The decor is charming and the cookies are fabulous! If you are looking for fresh from the oven cookies chocked with flavor and mixings - this is the place!!!

I pre-ordered one for a party last weekend, and I was definitely the most popular guy that night. I called a few days in advance and paid over the phone, so all I had to do was go and pick it up Friday afternoon. When I arrived at the bakery, I just told the girl at the counter my name and she went to package my cake. A few minutes later, and I was out the door, dessert in hand. Later at the party, when I walked in carrying the bag with the Billy's logo on it, the host was grinning from ear to ear. A few other guests "ooohed" and "aaahed." The cake was literally gone after about 15 minutes. My piece was moist and sweet, but not cloyingly so. The cream cheese frosting melted in my mouth and didn't feel heavy in my stomach afterwards. I have friends who don't even like bananas and they loved this cake. Yep, this one's definitely a winner and is going down in my book as the best banana cake ever.

I've been a regular at Billy's for a long time now. It's one of those old favorites that never lets me down. Things you already know you love at Billy's: Banana Cake, Red Velvet Cupcakes, Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie, Banana Cream Pie, Yellow Daisy Cupcakes with Vanilla Frosting, Cute Guys, No Bouncer, No Attitude, The Smell... Things you didn't know you love about Billy's: Butterscotch Gingerbread Cookies, THE COFFEE, Pecan Pie, Hello Dolly Bars

After hearing all the hype from my neighbors, I finally went to Billy's Bakery for the first time yesterday. For once an experience that lives up to legend!

First the smell. WOW! Enough said. Second the decor was so cute. It's small, but I think that just makes the place feel more homey and personal. The wallpaper, the formica tables, the pastel frosting and the doilies. It's so charming! Third, the customer service was great. It's seems from past posts that maybe the staff wasn't quite as friendly before, but the guy who helped me was very sweet. He patiently answered all of my one-million questions. Plus he was completely adorable. :) Finally, the german chocolate cupcake was so yummy I've been dreaming about it (and drooling) ever since. I love german chocolate, and this was probably the best I've ever had.

I really can't think of anything negative to say about this place. I loved it, and I can't wait to try more of their desserts in the future!

I ordered the Banana Cake upon the recommendation of the person working that night. It was such a moist & delicious cake. I was given a huge piece which went well with my glass of milk. My friends ordered the Red Velvet & some Chocolate cupcake. It wasn't all that, but the Banana Cake was definitely worth it for me!

Billy's is good overall. The smell of baking on the street...yummy! I live in the neighborhood and have sampled a bunch of their stuff (with my friend's help of course)--some things are better than others. Their carrot cake is literally to die for. Pumpkin squares, omigod. Cupcakes--everyone's a critic. Their recipes such as Red Velvet and Pineapple upside down does err on the side of being dense and a bit dry, like their cupcakes can be.
My biggest disappointment is around their service, which is a bit too brusque and delivered with a tad more attitude than is necessary--doesn't go with the cheery decor. They informed me of their 24 hour policy for orders, then when I did call to order a cake (luckily a few days in advance) they told me they couldn't accommodate me on the weekends!? I am now ordering a cake on Friday for a Saturday party because I promised the birthday girl....still can't understand why Billy's won't accommodate me. Frustrating and ruins the experience!

Someone brought them to an Oscar party, I'd never heard of them. What you dreamed cupcakes could taste like. One poster said they're dry, but they're actually just not the gummy Betty Crocker mess that some people are used to.

My friend took me to Billy's in Chealse over the weekend, and I really enjoyed the experience. I was so inspired by the decor I actually painted my room yellow and mint like the walls of the bakery. Similar in style to Magnolia, this is a better bet because you can avoid a line that wraps around the corner, take more than 12 cupcakes, and best of all..sit down! The bakers behind the counter were a bunch of cute guys, although from their conversations we could tell they weren't interested in the ladies swooning over them. We had a chocolate cupcake and a slice of German Cake, which was very good, especially when you wash it down with a cup of Billy's coffee. If you want good cupcakes that aren't over-hyped, go to Billy's instead!

Billy's is acutally a pretty decent spot. While they have there ups and downs, as with any business in it's first few years, they are on the right track. The service can be inconsistent, but it basically comes down to the high turnover rate in the foodservice industry and is not unique to Billy's; just read reviews from similar places, and you'll find the same thing. Here are a few points of clarification on incorrect statements in previous reviews. The Chocolate Cherry Cake does actually have cherries IN the batter, not just on top. As a former employee, I have baked it enough times to know. The cakes have not gone from 3 to 2 layers. Some cakes are 3 and some are 2, and they have been that way from day one. The cupcakes are exactly the same recipe as a number of other popular bakeries, so how they compare basically comes down to a matter of freshness, and I must say that they have made a number a changes in the past year or so to help with that issue. Going along with that is the matter of limiting numbers of cupcakes and slices. With a place this small, you can't have both. If you want to be able to get as much as you want, you have to consider that that is going to apply to everyone else as well, and the bakery will either run out (which is likely to be a point of complaint as well), or they will have to bake larger quantities during slower times (weekdays) to sell during busier times (weekends), and the products just won't be fresh (again, a point of complaint). Without going to such unfavorable territory as using preservatives and large amounts of Criso, that is about all a little bakery can do. Just stop in or give em a call a day or two ahead, and it will be no problem ( I know for a fact that most employees HATE having to tell customers they can't have however many of something they want). Billy's uses good quality ingredients, has talented bakers and some pretty great tasting stuff. Running a bakery in NYC is not as easy as it may seem.

This place is amazing! Honestly it is such a cute little place to go with a wide variety on the menu. Billy's Bakery is truly better than Magnolia's, the employees are nice and the location is crucial. All you need to know about this place is: WOW!

My colleagues and I have been big fans of Billy's and would often buy our desserts or afternoon treats from them. We nearly always buy birthday cakes from Billy's as well. Well we had a horrible experience there today. One of my colleagues went to Billy's to specifically buy some afternoon treats. She wanted to buy 4 slices of the red velvet cake. The rude girl behind the counter told her that it was their company policy that each customer is not allowed to buy more than 3 slices of the same cake. If they wanted more than 3 they would have to buy the whole cake. This is the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard. 4 people in my office wanted the same cake so therefore we have to buy an entire cake??? What if all 4 of us walked in there to order individual slices of the same cake - would they realize we were all together and make us buy the entire cake? Their cake is good but they are not the only bakers in the city. As a company we give a huge amount of business to Billy's but after this experience we will never go there again and we urge others to not go as well. Their attitude is that they do not need our business so why should we give it to them?

Here's the thing: I'm a former employee of this bakery and I will tell you that patience and good manners begin to fade after about 5 hours of lines snaking out the door and the occasional customer who seems to have waited all day just to ruin yours. If the service is less than stellar (if by stellar you mean a starbucks-fake demeanor) please remember that your waiter/waitress is a person too. Your server will remember you (and might throw in an extra cupcake or two) if you choose not to behave like a 3 year old. Words to live by: Banana Cake, Icebox Cake, Red Velvet Cake, and blueberry muffins.

The cupcakes seem OK - I am no expert - and the decor is great, but why did I get such poor service with a real dose of attitude? There was line going out to the door and I was waiting at the front for a while, but the guy who was supposed to be serving was chatting to his friend, and then in his good time asked the guy behind me what he would like! The guy behind me was as mystified as I was! I politely said I was next. He was then sullen and frosty. Do Billy's read these reviews? Are they going to do anything about the poor service? Their business was built on word of mouth...maybe they should take heed!

Billy's Bakery is sure to convert all of the Magnolia devotees into some additional varieties of belly bursting cupcakes. The desserts here are decent sized and the portions of frosting is a guarantee for diabetes.

I had to order a birthday cake from out of state for a meeting at my company's NY office, and staff in that office recommended Magnolia's first. However, after reading reviews on Citysearch, I asked for a back-up, and I was referred to Billy's. The first few reviews scared me off, but instead of spending an entire day researching bakeries in a city 500 miles away, I decided to disregard those reviews as ravings of people who are just difficult to please. I am happy to report that the cake was spectacular. I ordered the chocolate cake with chocolate frosting two days in advance, and the telephone service was fine. The cake itself was beautifully decorated and delicious. The cake portion was rich and almost fudgey, and the frosting was a delicious creamy buttercream. I got many compliments on that cake (always funny, since they know I didn't make it). The girl who picked it up for me also picked up some cupcakes for her office, and she reported no problems with the service, only delicious cupcakes. What's with the cupcake fascination in NYC anyway? :)

I am a bonafide cupcake freak, mostly because I have a sweet tooth and cupcakes are not easy to screw up, so I can usually find a decent, if not a great, one most anywhere I go. As a self-proclaimed expert, I do my share of sampling here in NYC and whenever I travel. Billy's Bakery has, hands-down, no contest, the nastiest cupcakes I have ever had. I could not even take more than two bites, which is really abnormal for me. The consistency of the cake seemed like that of particle board and dry wall mixed together with no adhesive...it was so crumbly. Taste was zilch. Nothing. If anything, it was like eating dry wall laced with lard. The frosting was really, really disgusting. It was a big pastel-colored dollop of margarine. It felt like eating pure fat. Not even good fat. Like eating margarine or crisco straight out of the container.

My boyfriend wanted to buy cupcakes for me from Billy's Bakery on our way home as a part of my birthday gift. I felt bad remembering that as I ran to the toilet several minutes after trying to finish one. I really did try to like these, but they're hopeless. So of the 4 cupcakes we bought, three-and-one-quarter of them went into the garbage (the other three-quarters in the can). Also, I don't understand snotty bakery staff. Dudes, you're slinging baked goods. Nothing to be ashamed of, of course, but nothing to get all high and mighty about either. Act like the customer matters, even just a little, and you might get a buck or two in your tip cup.

After reading so many good posts about this place I decided to go order a cake from Billy's. I got there and decided to try a few different cake flavors with my friend before making a decision on which to order. I bought 3 pcs of cake for my friend and I and to our dissappointment all 3 of the cakes were overly sweet and 15% too dry. Not being able to eat anymore cake I asked the short hair lady behind the counter for suggestions on which cake would be less sweet, but instead of helping me I think she took my question as an insult and gave me a nasty look then with rude body language walked away. Instead of trying to introduce me to other cakes she left me standing there. My friend and I were shocked by her behavior so we walked out shortly after.

The only think I could think to myself when I left Billy's was "I can't believe I just gave these people my money"

Never again will I go to this place. There are too many bakery's that actually have good cakes/cupcakes in the city WITH a helpful/pleasant attitude to go with it.

I keep wanting to give Billy's another chance. After all, I live in the neighborhood, a quick 2 min walk, and it sure is a cute place, but I have finally promised myself never to go back. The cupcakes and cookies and their various cakes and pies are all fine and have satisfied my sweet tooth in the past, but I continue to have bad experiences there with rude staff. I kept thinking my experiences were isolated incidents, but it's simply become routine to be treated shabbily there by clerks behind the counter. Just one recent example: It's not worth it to buy a $25 key lime pie from Billy's, only to have the counterperson cop an attitude because you politely ask if he can give you one of the ones in the refrigerator rather than the display case, because you are going to be travelling for one hour with the thing in July heat. Bottom line is customer service is nonexistent at this overly-hyped establishment. AND... two other options in the immediate neighborhood wins HANDS DOWN for truly awesome sweets and treats, so it's a no-brainer. Try the exceptional Three Tarts at 9th and 20th, or La Bergamote across the street from 3 Tarts. Bye bye Billy.

The place is adorable and the peanut butter pie is great, but the cupcakes are disappointing. I tried them twice to be sure of it.

The cupcake icing is wonderful, but the actual cake is very dry. Magnolia or Buttercup are much better.

If you're already in Chelsea, you might stop by, but its not worth the trip.

The red velvet cupcake here is subpar. The frosting is way too buttery and doesnt resemble the traditional cheesecake frosting that is an integral part of a great red velvet cake. The other treats are fine and the bakery itself is adorbale if you can get a seat at one of the two tables.

average cupcakes. there are much better to be had in manhattan alone. overall taste is good but flavors are unremarkable, possibly even absent. cake texture is somehow moist but inappropriately crumbly/chalk like -- it falls apart like a good biscuit should when you bite into it. frosting is not much different from that you can buy out of a can. biggest con: the service -- or lack of. they frost c-cakes right there in front of you. when asked for one w/o sprinkles was told they COULD NOT DO IT. whatever.

I LOVE THESE CUPCAKES! I will make the trip at 11pm all the way from the UES down the Chelsea so I can satisfy my craving. Cute environment, nice staff who always has a smile on their face, the smell of this place is AMAZING. My recommendation would be more tables so I can eat there for once but the space is tight so they work with what they have. Way better than some of the other "well known" places in the city.

My husband and I had our wedding catered by Billy's. They made a tower of 120 cupcakes and a two-layer cake for us. We ordered half chocolate half vanilla cupcakes and had white butter cream icing on each. It was delicious!! Although I wish they had a delivery service (we needed to pick up the cupcake tower, cupcakes, and return the tower after the wedding), their customer service was excellent and more than made up for that. When we ran into a snag with the restaurant, Billy's was more than accommodating. I suggest this bakery for parties and cupcake craving satisfaction!!

I've been going to Bill'ys with my wife and daughter since day one. We have always been more than satisfied with the lovely atmosphere, darling service and the delectable desserts! I couldn't wish for a better spot in our neighborhood. I reccomend the classic chocolate cake with vanilla buttercream. Also favorites of my family are german chocolate cake, all cookies and the delicious babana cream pie...to die for! This is dessert here people not rocket science.

I went back again just to be sure, and although this is a cute place, the cupcakes and cakes are extremely dry and tasteless under the icing. The icing is delicious, but someone should be informed that you need to have good, moist, delicious cake underneath it. Be sure to grab a utensil on your way out, as eating such dry cake is virtually impossible without one. Big dissapointment and really amazed at the press this bakery receives. Magnolia is MUCH better than this copycat bakery.

I went in for a red velvet cupcake as well as a vanilla cupcake and needless to say, they were both bland. The red velvet cupcake was indeed moist however flavorless as was the icing. The vanilla cupcake was dry with a heap of buttercream icing which happened to be the best part of cupcake. I think that for as bland as they both were, they were highly over priced. Should I decide to go back, I will try something else in order to see if this bakery is really worth visiting a third time.
The staff was more than friendly and the store was clean.

but the cakes I ate looked better than they tasted. The red velvet cake was pretty good and moist - burgundy red and sweet white icing. I was disappointed with the cherry chocolate cake, which is a misnomer, as the only cherry was on top of the cake. Additionally, the cake filling itself was very bland - just your typical corner bakery chocolate cake. The pineapple upside down cake was an utter disappointment, being that it was merely white cake with a few pineapples stuck to the top and glazed with a pineapple flavored jelly. Friendly staff and great decor.

This is a very good bakery to visit if you have a hunkering for a cupcake or other baked goods. They don' t keep you waiting forever. The cakes and pies are delicious but my favorite is the cupcakes. Especially the chocolate ones! The cakes in the display case always look so yummy that it's hard to choose one.

Went by today for the first time since reading about it in IN Style Magazine. The Red Velvet Cupcakes were so moist and delicious. Though it was a bit busy, the service was friendly and attentive. I give it to them for making the amount of product they do in that small space, only in New York! p.s. Try the peanut butter pie....enough said!

Beware the new cupcake rules in Manhattan. I stopped by Billy's Bakery to pick up 18 cupcakes for a company birthday party. While they had plenty of cupcakes in the display case and plenty drying on the rack, they insisted I could only buy 12 (although the woman before me bought 15), because they just got a large order in. I'm well aware of their 24 hr rule to order a cake, but the cupcake rule is new, not posted, and aribitrary. How silly to loose a steady customer (and one who used to sing their praises) because of 3 cupcakes. Sorry, Billy.

When Billy's first opened it was great! Light cupcakes, perfect frosting and great service was the highlight of this bakery. The last three times I went, the cupcakes were dry and the frosting was hard. Cakes use to be THREE layes and they would give large slices for $4. Now it is TWO layers and the slices are half the size for the same $4. Last year I ordered a cake for my mother's birthday and when I opened the cake box at home, there were spots on the side of the cake where you could see the cake ... no frosting! I had to go back to Billy's and ask for frosting in a cup to put it on myself. WHAT HAPPENED? I hate when a place is great at first to get you hooked and then turns to trash!
