I am ruined for all other steaks after eating here my whole life. They are the best! And by the way, not that it matters, but the one in Casmalia is actually the original Hitching Post, the one in Buellton is the Hitching Post II.
Recommend for sure, and if you can afford it, the lobster is amazing!!! But steak for sure, and the world famous fries are delicious. Reservations for sure! Still expect a wait, but well worth it.

This is at the top of my favorite places to eat. Only for the fact it is about a 4 hour drive for us. When visiting family in Santa Maria we usually go here. Nothing fancy, I call it a hole in the wall. But there is a reason this place packs them in, great food. They start you off with a relish tray to munch on, then either fruit coctail or shrimp coctail, then salad they have a wonderful house dressing. Then dinner of your choice, and for the finale ice cream of your choice. It is hard to find I say it is in the middle of no where. Make sure you mapquest. Enjoy

Pros: Two thumbs up!

Cons: It's in the middle of nowhere

.

There are two restaurants called the Hitching Post. They are owned by brothers. The one in Casmalia is officially "Hitching Post II." The one in Buellton--which was featured in the movie Sideways--is Hitching Post one. Rumor is the brothers barely talk anymore...

Well, the Hitching Post II in Casmalia is BETTER than the one in Buellton. (BTW the one is Buellton isn't so bad either.)
But come here for STEAK...only steak! It is awesome. They do steak the authentic Santa Maria Style way. They even have the grill enclosed in glass so you can watch!
The food is marvelous! And they put on all the fixin's with your meal. Soup, salad, potato. They even put little shrimp in the salad.
You will NEED a reservation. This place is always packed. A full dinner will run you about $30 before drinks. Great steak!
Plus, don't drink the water. The locals claim the water has toxic stuff in it from being near Vandenberg AFB. Maybe...
Hard place to find....way back up on a winding road.
But totally fun...worth the trip...Yum!

The Hitching Post is our absolute favorite place to go out to eat. This is the home of the best steak I have ever had in my life. It is so juicy and tender and absolutely just melts in your mouth. Their french fries are awesome too - very crispy on the outside and soft and airy on the inside. For about $18, you get a Top Sirloin Steak, veggie tray, garlic bread, fries or baked potatoes, salad (which is awesome) and ice cream for dessert. I would caution that if you decide to dine here, especially on the weekends, that you would be well-served to get a reservation. This place is extremely busy and you will have quite a wait without a reservation. Also, it is very noisy inside, so if you are looking for a quiet, intimate dinner then this is probably not the best choice.
