In 2010, my 19-yr-old son was referred to orthopedic surgeon Roy Pottenger in the same clinic, for assessment of pain caused by a minor non-union fracture on the joint of his big toe. Pottenger turned the case over to his "foot expert" Amy Duckworth. She stated that non-surgical options were "extremely limited" and that fusion of the joint was the definitive procedure, but would cause "early arthritis" in the metatarsal joint. Instead, she proposed and performed an "experimental" joint replacement. She cut a shocking full cm of bone off the end of the phalanx and placed a "roll" of mammalian graft tissue in the joint space--an OFF LABEL, contraindicated usage of the product (intended for tendon repair, with warnings against using it to replace normal body structures) for which she neither described the specific risks nor fully disclosed. This foreign tissue caused swelling and inflammation reactions that never resolved--reactions that have been documented in 198 Adverse Event Reports on file with the FDA. For the severe pain that followed, she then prescribed 1300 narcotic pills in the first 90 days post surgery--pain which also never resolved after following her advice to "give it a full year." He has since had three fusion attempts by orthopedic surgeons at Stanford and UC Davis, all of which required grafts of bone harvested from the iliac crest to fill the space. No one we have consulted has ever seen anything like the procedure Duckworth performed. He has been in severe pain and pain management for the entire three years, graduating from Norco and Tramacol to Methadone and Percocet. Being Duckworth's guinea pig has nearly destroyed my son's life.

Update: As of November, 2013, Duckworth no longer practices at Summit Orthopedics and has left no forwarding information.
