I love this center! They have it all. I could spend the whole day here getting massage, acupuncture, etc...
I see Shannon for acupuncture and have been so impressed. She spends a lot of time with me getting to know me and my body's needs before she begins her work.
The space inside is comfortable and nice. I highly recommend this center!
Pros: They have it all here!
Cons: Have to drive to NW for appt.
I've been seeing two physicans at Kwan-Yin Healings Arts Center since April. They are my allies and I look forward to each appointment. They've been most helpful and supportive during my personal process of healing. I highly recommend this healing arts center for acupunture and mayan abdominal massages.
At Kwan-Yin I've gotten the most holistic health experience of my life. I feel that I have a team behind me, that collaborate and discuss my health in order to deliver the most optimum care possible. They consider all aspects of care by weighing all the physical, emotional and financial impacts it has on people--short and long term. I trust in my health care providers for the first time in a long time.
Jenny Netzer is the first acupuncturist I've seen. I am admittedly a skeptic by nature, but from the first session there were immediate results. One example being, I have very irregular periods which has always concerned me. Within one month of seeing Jenny she started my period for me! Magic. And then succeeded the next month as well. Jenny is an advocate for my health: a knowledgeable, concerned, and gifted healer. I only wish I'd met her sooner.
Go, and get pure, simple answers.
Pros: natural healers with tangible results
Cons: none to speak of
I've tried a couple of other naturopath doctors before I found Dr. Gurevich through my co-worker. Other naturopath doctors I've seen have prescribed a lot of supplements to purchase from their offices, which weren't that effective, but Dr. Gurevich's approach is different. She understood that I was on a budget so she prescribed only what's necessary, and also gave me a lot of advice on dietary and lifestyle changes. I'm starting to feel a lot better now.
I highly recommend Dr. Sarah Wylie's Mayan Abdominal Massage. Her approach is sacred, caring and competent, and the results are truly life-changing.
Pros: Example: best croissants in town
Cons: What are the drawbacks?
From the time you enter the door, everyone treats you with care and kindeness. The schedulers are very patient with all types of personality-types. They take time to answer your insurance and other questions in detail.
The office is clean and serene.
The acupuncturists (I've seen 3) are professional without being stand-offish. Daniel Raider has provided me with long term care that is sensitive to my needs as a whole person. I truly feel cared for and cared about. He includes me in decision making and in the process of my healing. Though I have not had acupuncture treatment before going to K'wan-Yin, I can not imagine ever going anywhere else.
Pros: Very kind and attentive service
Cons: None I can think of
Admittedly, this is my first experience with an accupuncturist and naturopath, but I've had amazing results with Mary Huang and Ilana Gurevich at Kwan-Yin Healing Arts Center. Mary and Dr. Gurevich work together to create a care plan and follow up to check the results and tweak it if necessary. I've received compassionate and integrated care, to the point where after tearing my ACL and spraining my MCL in a ski accident, Mary added time into her schedule to treat me immediately for the pain and swelling.
The clinic is warm, inviting, and clean, and the office staff are wonderful. Parking is easy and available despite the location, near busy NW 23rd. I live in NE and can get to the clinic and park within 10 to 15 minutes from my door.
If you're in the market for accupuncture or naturopathic care, you can feel comfortable going to Kwan-Yin and working with anyone at the clinic.
Pros: Responsive, caring, knowledgeable
Cons: may not be on your insurance plan
The Kwan-Yin Healing Arts Center atmosphere is very peaceful, calming, relaxing, and welcoming. Dr. Chen is absolutely amazing. She listens very carefully , and an excellent problem solver. Her personality is very calming, relaxing, caring, and loving. As you can already read they are highly recommended. I really enjoy Asian Health Care. There is no comparison to Western medicine. Healing starts within.
After 10+ years of debilitating pain from endometriosis, I finally decided to try acupuncture. I was tired of eating ibuprofen, going to the ER only to be given pain meds, uncaring docs, etc. I was referred to Lanai Mackey by a co-worker and I have now been pain-free for the past 8 months. It feels good to feel good! Before long most of my coworkers were going to see Lanai for acupuncture treatments for various health issues. She is the most caring, peaceful practitioner I have ever gone to. I always look forward to my appointments with her. Lanai is nothing short of a miracle worker and I am eternally grateful to her. I also had the pleasure of being treating by Dr. Chen and that was almost a spiritual experience. She is amazing! I highly recommend acupuncture to everyone I know!
Only a few meetings with Mary Huang for accupuncture and Ilana Guervich for naturopathic medicine brought greater relief for chronic illnesses than several years of traditional Western treatment had. They both treat me with respect and listen well to the answers I give to their thoughtful questions. Having the two in the same office really allows for a sharing of complementary treatments which have given me a peaceful mind and a much less painful body. There is no need to make a trip to the pharmacy since the dispensary is right there, and confidence that the formulas are the correct ones. The general aura is peaceful, and I have had only positive experiences with the office staff. I truly look forward to my visits at Kwan-Yin!
Wonderful!!! The atmosphere is warm, calming and inviting. The staff is friendly and Muir is an amazing healer.
The providers at Kwan Yin "complement" not only Western medicine, but also each other. I've been to 5 chiropractors over the course of my life, three of whom I considered to be excellent practitioners. Dr. Rabai stands out as the best fit for me. She is by far the most holistic and precise. She was very thorough in asking me questions about my symptoms (digestive and back pain) and constantly checking in and adjusting. At the end of my visit, she also suggested that I might benefit from an acupuncture treatment. I am so glad she did. Dr. Chen was equally warm and thorough. I could actually feel the flow of energy being restored where there were blockages and pain.
Both of them were clearly healing not just the symptoms but me as a whole person. I felt substantial relief by the end of both appointments. By the following afternoon my body felt more alive, energetic and balanced than before I had gotten sick two weeks prior. I will definitely return! I feel lucky to have found a place where my insurance covers (in my experience) top-notch practitioners of multiple modalities under one roof.
Dr. Sara Wylie was very caring and gentle with my 2 1/2 year old daughter. She listened intently to all my questions and concerns and manged to address them all! I feel very comfortable recommending her to anyone with children.
I started seeing Dr. Sarah e Wylie about a year ago. After two years of frustration with typical western medicine I met Dr. Wylie at a lecture about abdominal cyst and a technique called Mayan abdominal massage. My interest was piqued so I made an appointment. (I had been having problems with missed periods or very long periods lasting more than two months). Every session we have had, Dr. Wylie has been attentive to me. Listening and making me feel as if it wasn't all in my head. With her treatments which include the Mayan abdominal massage, I have seen improvements in my cycles, I feel more energetic, and my overall health has greatly improved. Dr. Wylie also is responsive out of the office as well. She answers my emails filled with questions in her days off as well as checking on me to see how I am doing with new treatments. Dr. Wylie also stays ontop of the current medical research and shares her findings that she feels are important to my case. Unlike other doctors I have been to in the past, she has been warm, compassionate, a great listener, honest, and explains lab tests results and other findings in easy to understand terms. I highly recommend Dr. Wylie.
Pros: short wait time, attentive, listens, compassionate, considerate, responsive, problem solver
Dr. Sarah e Wylie treated me with a Mayan abdominal massage after the birth of my son and it was a wonderful and nurturing experience. I was having problems with rectal and bladder prolapse and the massage made a dramatic improvement. Dr. Wylie is intuative and kind in her manner and creates an atmosphere of trust and openess. She is a true healer.
I recently had two abdominal surgeries -- the 1st to remove my right ovary and the 2nd to remove scar tissue that formed after the first surgery. Within weeks of the 2nd surgery, I could feel new scar tissue forming. I also noticed that I was feeling a growing sadness, fatigue, and mild depression.
Two friends suggested abdominal massage to help eliminate scar tissue. I've since had three sessions of Maya Abdominal Massage with naturopath Sarah Wylie and this process is amazing on many levels. After the 2nd massage, I could tell that my incision was healing normally and wouldn't be forming the scar tissue like it had after the 1st surgery.
In my 3rd massage, much to my surprise, I felt deep grief when Sarah was working the area where my ovary had been removed. Then, suddenly, the grief was gone. The next day I felt lighter, happier, and more energized than I had since the surgeries. It seemed that something was released during that massage.
Maya Abdominal Massage is quite profound. Not only is it giving me the outcome I wanted (eliminating scar tissue), but it's also offering unexpected emotional and energetic healing. I suspect I'm addressing whatever imbalance caused the growth of the abnormal cyst that led to the removal of my right ovary and thus restoring greater health and balance to my pelvic area, which I believe is critical for women, since this is where the source of our feminine power resides.
As for Sarah, her energy is that of a priestess. She approaches her work with a sacred reverence and her wise and experienced touch is deeply nourishing and profoundly healing. This is work she was born to do and I strongly believe that all women would benefit greatly from receiving Maya Abdominal Massage from Sarah. And if you're pregnant, if you've ever experienced any pelvic trauma, or if you currently have gynecological problems, I would heartily encourage you to give Maya Abdominal Massage a try.
I have been a patient at Kwan Yin Healing Arts Center since it's inception. Over the years I have come to see it grow from an individual practice to an entire integrative health center. David Berkshire is a unique individual in his abilities to nurture healing through compassion and attention to the root of the illness at hand. Likewise, he has brought together a truly amazing group of practitioners who share these attributes and intention. The diversity of modalities and specialties that each practitioner posses provide me with the best possible care. If you are new to "complementary (or alternative)" care I recommend you to give Kwan Yin a try. So long as you a specific at stating you needs and desired outcomes, you are likely to find an excellent practitioner that is able to address your specific condition. In addition, the office staff have always been helpful in scheduling and billing insurance. I have never witnessed or encountered a problem that was not met with respect and sincerity by the office staff or practitioners. Also, I have never waited more than 10 minutes. The tea in the waiting area is a nice touch. I have been recommending my friends for years and everyone who has come in has been very happy. The only potential problem is that some practitioners are often booked more than a week out, or can only take new patients on a limited basis...so you have to plan ahead!
Pros: Very family friendly, Genuine Care, Diversity of specialties/modalities, Practitioners work together to create wellness plan
Cons: Don't miss your appointment-or you may have to wait a week to get in.
I've been a patient here for over a year and have had nothing but one excellent experience after another. Dr. Chen is simply amazing. Her gentle nature is very calming and her skills with a needle are at the highest level. I always feel rejuvenated after her treatments and I no longer suffer from the allergies or migraine headaches that plagued me for years. The other great thing about Kwan-Yin is their helpful and knowledgable front desk staff. They take care of any insurance issues I have swiftly, and have made my healthcare experience much less of a headache than other clinics I've been to. The folks at Kwan-Yin are top-notch, and I highly recommend them!
I love Kwan-Yin Healing Arts Center! I have been seeing two practitioners there starting over 6 years ago and in that time, my health has improved dramatically. They have succeeded in addressing every health issue I have had in a way that is natural and comfortable. Western medicine failed me and when I turned to Kwan-Yin I found the solution. I was skeptical at first, but now I am a firm believer in acupuncture and naturopathic medicine and a devoted client at Kwan-Yin.
Pros: Service, Quality of Care, Tranquil Atmosphere
Let me preface this review by saying that I have a sister who is a GREAT massage therapist. Unfortunately we live in different cities so I am forced to seek out other therapists to get my fix. Needless to say, I am extremely picky and have ridiculously high standards when seeing other massage therapists, and I am a massage hopper as a result.
Amanda lived up to my standards in every way: professional, punctual, and knowledgeable. The best part--she possesses the perfect mix of skill and intuition. I felt comfortable asking her questions, requesting various techniques, and I left feeling great. I can't wait to book my next appointment!
Pros: On time, pleasant staff, awesome massage
Cons: Out of my way
My husband had gone here a couple times. The last time he went there he waited in the waiting room for more than an hour before they realized he was even there for his appointment! There was no receptionist and nobody checked to see if he came in! I showed up to pick him up and drive home but he was still waiting to be seen! Then his massage therapist came but she was rude and my husband said the treatment never helped. There are hundreds of other clinics around NW that are better organized and more friendly.
I see two practitioners at Kwan Yin Healing Arts center and have found it to be a healing and valuable experience every time.
They have lots of positive reviews so I thought I'd check it out. Big mistake. I think the reviews are posted by their employees. I had a guy named Keith try to give me treatment, but he was pretty awkward and my arm feels worse (2 weeks later). The staff was also kind of rude, so it was just a bad all around experience.
I have been working with David Berkshire on and off for about 6 years. He is nothing short of amazing. He is truly the kindest soul you'll ever meet, and truly is meant to be a healer. It is such a pleasure to be able to go into his warm, cozy environment, and talk to someone who REALLY listens, and focuses on you as an individual. There have been times when acupuncture hasn't been the answer for my needs at the time, and he is always the first to refer to a different type of provider who might be able to help. But overall he alone has helped me with a variety of needs...chronic and acute pain, emotional trauma, and even fertility issues. He is such an incredible person and professional, and I would highly recommend him to everyone . In addition, his staff is wonderful...kind and compassionate, and willing to work with your schedule. They have even helped keep an eye on my 3 year old when I have had to bring him along! David and his whole staff will do everything they can to be accomodating, so they can provide the healing that people need. They are wonderful!!
Pros: Comforting environment, Fabulous staff
I took our preemie daughter to see David Berkshire to get help treating her acid reflux. David came HIGHLY recommended from a friend. Within the first few minutes of our initial visit David explained why she had reflux and exactly what his touch (craniosacral therapy) would do to help correct the problem. Sure enough, my daughter began making progress within that visit and improved each day thereafter. We only had to see David 3 times. What I appreciated most is that he didn't want to keep us coming and coming. He told me she was doing well and wanted to give her body a chance to heal itself. It just needed some skilled guidance, which David provided. I'm so happy that we were able to avoid the pharmaceutical vaccum that our pediatrician recommended. She would have been on Prilosec for months to treat her reflux. I'm glad we were able to find a way to let her heal herself. She's doing so well and thriving, we couldn't be happier.
I was referred to Daniel Raider at Kwan-Yin Healing Arts Center when my previous acupuncturist left town. I would highly recommend acupuncture and Daniel to anyone. I had been treated 8 year for chronic pain and was receiving morphine the last year with no relief, when I finally turned to acupuncture where I have finally started getting some relief.
I also have fibromyalgia, mygraines, depression, cataracs, and back pain which have been treated or I am being treated currently. Daniel always takes time to listen to you before each treatment. He's interested in your ailments as well as what's going on personally. He is a very compassionate man. Daniel has an appropriate sense of humor. He was very quick to know when he could kid with me to cheer me up.
My previous acupunturist was treating me for weight gain from my medications - he put me on an elimination diet where I lost 60 pounds in 4 months, and suggested herbs that lowered my cholesterol. I am still working on that with Daniel as well as working on total body wellness.
Kwan-Yin has a friendly, helpful staff too. They are so good to me even when I am not having a good day.
Pros: Frindly/helpful staff Daniel, professional, compassionate, knowledgable
After years of trying many different treatments, both mainstream and alternative, I have found at Kwan-Yin a comprehensive treatment that is shaped by my individual system. I am finally experiencing a move toward health, and not just a suppression of symptoms. The Five-Elements acupuncture is gentler and helps with my whole energy profile of symptoms--physical, emotional, spiritual. All the people I've encountered there have been warm and clearly passionate about their healing of whole people.
Pros: Quality of care
My experience at Kwan Yin Healing Arts Center has greatly improved my emotional and physical well being in a very short time - just over 3 months. I was referred to Daniel Raider by a friend and consider his approach to treating emotional, spiritual and physical conditions to be outstanding and very different from other acupuncturists I've seen in the past. I was also pleased that the center accepted my insurance plans. During the first session, he took a full inventory of my body systems and zeroed in on the problem areas and areas for treatment. He also considers treatment on a continuum, with consistent therapeutic treatments weekly to start off and gradually tapers off as the ailments recorrect themselves. Although I haven't used other practitioners in the center, my interaction with them has been nothing short of wonderful: the whole team is very nurturing , patient and professional. .
Pros: Close in location, evening hours
Cons: Parking can be challenging in the NW 23rd area, try walking , or bus or bike
I was referred to Daniel Raider by another accupuncturist that was moving out of the area to continue my
treatment for back pain. He has been working on my problem for a couple of months with very good results. What I like is that Daniel explains what he is doing, by telling me what area is affected by the treatment.
I have tried other methods for pain relief and accupunture works the best. I feel that Kwan-Yin Healing Arts Center is a very good place to go for your health needs.
Pros: They have there own parking area
Cons: the parking is limited
I have been a client of Kwan Yin Healing Arts since January 2008. I originally went in because I had back problems (of which I have had frequently in the past couple years, including my back going out twice) and found out they accepted my insurance. I was immediately comfortable when walking in there, as they have a very relaxing environment that is not at all intrusive. Dr. Lisa Patenode was very welcoming and personable. Immediately I felt better and after a few sessions, I became pain-free! However, just as a touch up, I still go in once a month and even when I think nothing is wrong, I still walk out feeling better every time!
Since then (after finding out there was acupuncture there as well) I have become a client of Daniel Raider as well, and have had incredible results in just a few short months! I had never had acupuncture before and was terrified the first time, but Daniel was very comforting and I was surprised by how painless it all was. He even made me feel safe when I had an awkward moment of uncontrollable tears.
Since then, I no longer have anxiety, I quit smoking (without any cravings!), my migraines have gone, and am overall a calmer and happier person. I highly recommend coming here!
All I know is this is the first time in many many years I don't have to take advil as breakfast, just to get through the day.
Pros: A welcoming staff, and they really do cater to everything you need on a very personal level
I am a person that grew up with a firm confidence and belief in Western medicine but I recently went through a health crisis that Western medicine struggled to figure out how to help me. At a suggestion of a close friend I call Kwan-Yin. Despite their very busy schedule they were able to get me in for a first visit within a week and showed tremendous compassion and assistance. I have been seeing Daniel Raider the entire time and I cannot express how comforting, helpful and confidence inspiring. He has truly been a god-send. I cannot recomend them highly enough.
Pros: incredible staff and practitioners
I've been a patient of David Berkshire for seven years and can't say enough wonderful things about him. I have a complicated medical history and his treatments, kind nature and empathy have helped me tremendously, both in ways I had hoped for, and in unexpected ways as well. I am needle sensitive, and an unlikely candidate for acupuncture, but David always takes my low tolerance for pain into consideration. I've also really enjoyed other practioners David has asked to join his practice. Dr. Lisa Patenode has given my challenging back specialized care that I haven't received from other chiropractors, and it has made a big difference in my day to day level of comfort. Jen Driscoll is a great massage therapist. I've encouraged many of my friends to try Kwan-Yin and they likewise have loved their care there and become regular patients as well.
Pros: An office full of great practioners and staff
I went in expecting (and a little bit hoping for) a roller coaster of change in my physical and emotional health. There was some of that, but what has been really amazing is the subtle shifts I've made in the way I experience my life. I feel more sure and have so much less anxiety in a huge number of areas in my life. It isn't like any of my anxieties are magically gone after three months, rather the volume dial on the emotional noise has been turned down. I see Daniel Raider for Five Element Acupuncture and plan to keep seeing him into the future for ongoing support. I beleive that his success in my case is a combination of his presence and the strength of the acupuncture he is practicing. He is one of the most honestly caring healthcare provider's I've seen. (and let me tell you... I've seen quite a few over the years) I also hear he also deals a lot with pain management. The space is beautiful and the staff lovely. I would recommend Daniel to anyone seeking sustainable change in their lives who is willing to take the time and has the self awareness to get it.
I moved to Portland in 2007. I have been seeing several of the Kwan Yin practitioners since that time. I came with migraines that had me in the hospital, skin problems that were chronic, extreme low energy and depression. I cannot express the difference in my life at this time. I began seeing David Berkshire, and he helped me cure my migraines-it's been a solid year since I've had one, and I was having them monthly! He then referred me to Mary Huang, who I continue to see, and her knowledge of Chinese herbs has given me a vitality I didn't know was possible. Dr. Ilana Gurevich ran several lab tests and found food allergies that were contributing to my dis-ease. Her diet recommendations have changed my daily life! Recently I have started seeing Erin Kenning for NAET; acupuncture treatments that cure food and environmental allergies, seriously! Amazing work! I truly cannot express in words the healing that I have received from this clinic. They work together as an integrated health team, and that's your best bet for achieving total health.
I have been an acupuncture client of David Berkshire for over the past three years, and he has contributed more to my general health and well being than any medical practitioner I have ever seen. Also, I just completed a SOMA series with Jen Driscoll and she is totally awesome, and a huge asset to the group at Kwan-Yin Healing Arts Center. Now I just hope I can still get an appointment as their client base grows and grows! I look forward to every visit.
Cons: Parking sometimes an issue
I have been a client of David Berkshire for several years. My best description for the Kwan-Yin Healing Arts Center is peaceful. The environment is quiet, comfortable and positive, The staff is always welcoming, supportive & helpful. I know that each visit will place me on the path to a more balanced life. As I have referred friends & family, they also have shared my thoughts. A better world awaits you.
Cons: Ambience, service, results
