I chose to see Dr. Richter because I am new to the area and he was the closest, available counselor/therapist near my home. The only good thing I can say about him is his office was able to get me in right away. Unfortunately, though, my experience with Dr. Richter--I quit seeing him after only one session--was a bad one. I left feeling worse than I did when I originally came in. I came to receive help with something that was not easy for me to discuss, and Dr. Richter seemed to talk down to me during the entire session. I have no idea if this is his typical demeanor, or if he was put off by me being a young woman (he is an older man), but I felt he was rather demeaning. He made completely false statements that had nothing to do with what I was telling him. I am now seeing a quality therapist, who I drive an hour out of the way to see. I've seen her many times and feel heard, understood, and helped. It was through speaking with her that I realized how much projection Dr. Ricther was doing during my first session. If you do not know what projection is, it is when a mental health professional puts his or her own beliefs/feelings on a client and projects that these beliefs/feelings originated from the client, when they did not. Please contact me if you have specific questions - I have no problem stating what these projections were.

My wife and I wend to see Dr. Richter over a span of a few years. I also went to see him alone. As said in the other reviews, he tells it like it is, but in a professional and caring manner. He was a great help to my wife and I. I had numerous issues, which I worked on due to his help and wisdom (and am still working on). A truly caring and wise, and HELPFUL man. Would strongly recommend.

I found Dr. Richter to be very helpful. He motivates you, chooses his words with kindness and frankness and is compassionate. He also tells you like it is with wisdom and expertise that is appropriate and needed. He forces you to confront unresolved issues without being too aggressive and is ever the professional. You leave his office with a goal to reach before your next meeting and with a renewed sense of peace.

PROS: insightful, compassionate, frank, kind

Found Dr. Richter to be very challenging. You're there for help and answers. If you're looking for someone to validate your preconcieved ideas, this may not be the place for you.
He confronts and challenges you with what you need to hear. It's not always pleasent to see another side of yourself or your spouse, but it is necessary and in order.
He kept me on track. I found him to be quite helpful. He doesn't mince words and ideas. He's quite perceptive and it would be in your best interset to hear him out....after all, that's why you're there.

PROS: very challenging, very perceptive, not there to play games.
CONS:

I was referred to Dr Richter by my regular doctor and was completely disappointed. I went twice and paid $100 for each session and he was absolutely no help what so ever. He did not listen to me and talked to me like I was an idiot. He made suggestions that had absolutely nothing to do with my problem. He was completely deeming! I would not recommend
