I recently moved to LA and found Dr. Masterson through my insurance company. My experience with her has been wonderful. I am completely shocked to hear about all of the negative reviews.

I will admit that I waited almost an hour the first time, but I did not mind because she spent almost an hour with me going over my history since I was a new patient. She was even nice enough to offer me any other type of referrals that I may need for dentists, primary care, etc. I found her to be VERY thorough in going over my history. I have had surgery on my ovary and have had fibroid tumors in the past. She even asked me if I was planning on having any more children because if I was perhaps I should look into freezing my eggs. My doctor back east never suggested that option. After my pap exam, she asked that I get an ultrasound just to determine the size of my fibroids. A few days later I got a call from her staff regarding my pap results and was told that I had an infection. They called in the prescription and all went well. Back to the fibroids and ultrasound- the staff called me when they got the results from my ultrasound and asked that I come in to see Dr. Masterson. I asked if I had to come in person and was told yes because she would like to discuss the results in person. Yes, they had to reschedule that appointment, but they did it a few days in advance and it was for the following day. When I arrived to go over my results I was waited on immediately. Dr. Masterson was absolutely courteous and friendly. She explained to me that my fibroid was very large and discussed surgery to remove it. She explained the different procedures/techniques to remove it and the risks associated with each. We discussed the different hospitals and which one would be best to handle this type of procedure. She also told me that she would wait a few minutes before she left the room so I could process the information and to make sure I didn't leave with unanswered questions. I asked her if she would talk to my sister who is a surgeon not an OBGYN regarding the results (most doctors hate talking to family members that are doctors) Dr. Masterson said she would talk to her without any hesitation! She also told me to feel free to call as many times as I needed during my decisionmaking process.

Upon leaving, I immediately called me former OBGYN and faxed the results that Dr. Masterson had given me. My old docter called to confirm everything that Dr. Masterson said, BUT what shocks me is that my old doctor said that my tumor had been almost the size of a baseball for a few years and since I wasn't having any pain she didn't think it was necessary to do anything . She agreed it will eventually will need to be removed one day (this is news to me she told me people live with them). Come to find out if it grows any bigger I will need a C-section type procedure to remove it!! Obviously I want to avoid a C-section at all costs due to the down time and other associated risks. I recommend Dr. Masterson because she is thorough and she is proactive with advanced surgery techniques. My surgery is schedueled and am confident that she is the right doctor for the job.

The staff is very rude. They cancelled my appointment 2 times after I had waited 3 weeks. I am going to find a different doctor!!

I have expectations for anyone I pay to provide a service for me. They are not high or irrational, they are fair. She does not meet these expectations which is made obvious in previous reviews.

I DON'T expect a dr to coddle me like a toddler that skinned their knee or be my best friend.
I DO expect a dr to treat me with respect and dignity. I don't need a dr to hold my hand and kiss my boo boo's, but I expect them to do their job and address my questions and concerns in a positive manner. I may not be an MD, but I have an associates degree in the medical field from right after high school and now a PH.D. in engineering so I don't like to be talked to like I'm stupid.

I DON'T expect them to see me immediately upon my arrival and spend an hour with me.
I DO expect to be seen in a reasonable amount of time and for them not to rush through my appt like I'm not a person just a $ sign. Waiting nearly 2 hours then to be left with questions because they are too busy to see me for my entire appt is unacceptable. Time to fix your scheduling or take on less patients. I understand that babies come when they want and OB's are often called away to the hospital, but a phone call to let me know you'll be at the hospital and I need to reschedule is a reasonable expectation.

I DON'T expect the staff to be perfect and happy all the time.
I DO expect the staff to have manners and do their job, whether that means calling you with test results, fixing billing mistakes, or notifying you of delays.

I DON'T expect the dr to agree with my on everything.
I DO expect them to respect my position an things and not try to change my mind to suit them or push their beliefs on me. they have no right to treat me like a bad parent because I'm against circumcision or prefer home birth with a midwife after a bad hospital experience with unnecessary "interventions".

After seeing her on tv I am not suprised with any of this. I'm glad some people had good experiences with her, but I'd say steer clear if you want to be treated like a person and not an inconvenience. Remember you are PAYING this person for your health care, they should be taking care of and apologizing to YOU! I can't believe some of these women apologized to her! Getting phone calls in the middle of the night or on the weekend comes with the territory of being a dr. If you don't like that, you're in the wrong field and should find a different job.

LOL, I am a Male and looking for this doctor's "fan base". I have quickly seen that she has very few that actually like her. I can say that she has no fans in the Male world. So many males hated being circumcised and this doctor blames all of the loose sexual STD's and HIV on the Male's foreskin. She is a cut-O-Holilic and if you want to know the truth and facts about the Male Penis AND the importance and facts about "why" Males have 4skins-google NOCIRC among a wealth of other sites. You won't get teh truth form this doctor. NOCIRC are a group that really knows the Males' side of the want and NEED for keeping a very important piece of nerve filled skin. She sees MAles and vermon. The last Doctor Show has gotten the Foreskin Restoration groups up in arms. She paints only the picture that will help her win a "yell out". and if she does that lying on TV, then I can only imagine what she "spins" in her office to patients. Males want their 4skin-don't think for a moment we don't. And those that were mutilated at birth-well they really have nothing to compare to-they aren't even restored and I have truly "healed" emotionally and physically from having my foreskin flap re-growsn thru non-surgical methods based on Tissue Expansion. I restored and now see why SHE is such a danger to the young New Born Males in that she "abuses her celebrity" to further her own "personal" opinions. We Males are not the cause and carriers of HIV and other STD's-loose sexual practices and unclean genetalia are-on both Males AND females.

here's a very GREAT doctor that really tells it like it is, Dr Dean Edell. I'd love to have him on the Doctors Show, but then all 4 doctors would have to learn some manners first so we could hear some truth about CIRCUMCISM!

The doctor and the staff are total prima donnas. My appointments always start 20-45 minutes late. I'm not looking for a friend in my doctor, but, dang, she is cold. My appointments are frequently canceled last minute and without explanation. (I guess the doctor has a TV appearance or interview for TMZ.) The staff is totally unfriendly. Believe it or not, my insurance company has been more helpful in sorting out my OB/GYN billing issues than this doctor's office. Getting a prescription filled requires multiple phone calls. There is no ultrasound on-site so every year I have to traipse to a radiology center for the other half of my exam. I gave this office several chances. I'm outta there!

If this doctor was born in 72, how does she have 17 years in?
She fights "Infanticide" in 3rd world countries yet performs abortion in the US. Same thing!
She told Marlo Thomas she grew up watching "That Girl" which went of the air when she was an infant and cable didn't come out until the mid 80's.
As with many young doctors today, she is a book-trained robot that preaches what the "establishment" does.
Caring about people and seeing them as more than their condition is not proftable and why we're in the shape we are as a country.

Is anyone as annoyed by Dr. Masterson on the Doctors tv show as I am? Why is she allowed so much talk time on the show?? She comes across as very arrogant and full of herself. I've read lots of reviews of her from former patients with an overwhelming number of disappointments from her. The other three doctors on the show seem very knowledgeable, and more importantly, friendly and down to earth. She's the opposite of them and yet she seems to be dominating the show for months now. Why does Travis allow this?? Someone shed some light on this........

Dr. Masterson delivered both of my children. At first, I wasn't used to her demeanor as she is very focused on your health and not that much on being personable. Part of me wished she was more personable, but then I had to ask myself why I needed her to be that way. As I searched myself, I realized that the most important thing she could do for me is to take care of me and my unborn babies. She is the BEST OB/GYN that I know when it comes to her medical knowledge and care. At the end of the day, she is my physician, not my mother or my friend. And it's my mother and friends that I need the love and care from, not my doctor. Therefore, I recommend her. My children are healthy and beautiful and she guarded my health every step of the way. Good luck to all of you!

When a woman goes to the ob/gyn, whether for a routine checkup or because she is receiving prenatal care, she wants someone warm, caring, understanding, willing to answer questions. She needs to be made comfortable in the doctor's office. I got exactly the opposite treatment visiting Dr. Masterson's office. Her staff was rude and unfriendly, and she herself was just more of the same. I never went back again. If you have any other choice, find a friendly doctor who is knowledgeable and who will make you feel comfortable. Good luck to you, my lovelies...and please remember, you deserve the best - so don't settle for anything less!

lisa masterson, md has created a capable team and lovely environment. i had a nice experience with dr. masterson's office staff & doctor. this was my first annual with her office and i found the surroundings warm. her receptionists/office staff were inviting and helpful. i didn't see dr. masterson, but another female doctor who works under her. i don't remember her name, unfortunately, but she was perfectly attentive and helpful. i don't need a best friend when i visit a doctor (it actually kinda creeps me out when a doctor is overly gregarious). i do expect a nice and competent doctor in a warm environment. so far, lisa masterson's office exceeds my requirements.

I don't know this doctor, but from reading the reviews, she sounds great. I tend to trust the reviews that give me a well rounded explanation of their personal experience. If they can't give me a well rounded explanation for positive or negative, then I can't go by that. So far, the reviews that I trust are that she's a good doctor.

I bet a lot of the negative reviews about Dr. M are the same person using different accounts. Preggers is an idiot, if she wasn't she'd know that not all black women have attitudes. Racism will not go away because of people like her.

I can't believe all the negative comments on here. I went to her for the first time and I didn't have to wait, her staff made me feel incredibly comfortable and at ease (and I hate doctors, doctors offices, visits, everything). She was very helpful, pleasant and addressed all of my concerns. I was nervous after reading all of the negativity on here but now realize it might just be because she also happens to be on television. Just goes to show you, you shouldn't believe everything you read.

I found Dr. Lisa Masterson after another LA area Ob/Gyn had me in tears at my first pregnancy appointment (he yelled at me for bringing a short list of interview questions from a magazine - I was so nervous and had no idea what to ask on my own). I left shaking and decided I wanted a kind and compassionate doctor. I started working through a list and stopped when I found Dr. Masterson. She was everything I needed. She was kind, compassionate, bright, dedicated, thorough, conservative, and always addressed any concerns. I also loved her dedication to helping mother's deliver healthy babies in developing countries. She was with me every step of the way with both pregnancies.

Her office staff always made me feel special and are kind. Give them respect, and you will get it back.

Fast forward, and I have two healthy girls nearly 10 and 7 years old.

I believe that everyone needs to find their right fit for a doctor, I am grateful to have found mine. Give her a chance, and you may feel the same.

I am currently new to this site and attempting to navigate through the pages to find things, but the whole reason I am even making an account is to respond to someone I can't seem to remember or find on here. But firstly, let me say that the only reason I am even reading anyone's posts on this site is because I have been up all night trying to gain reassurance, as my first ever gynocologic appointment is today in about five hours or so. And to my dismay, I have not found much comfort. Anyway, so I in my search, I thought about Ms. Masterson because I remembered her on the Doctors, a show which I really like. I wondered if there was a way to talk to her online or reach her (stupid, I know...but I am really terrified). Then I stumbled upon this site and it appears that she is not all she seems. This is not my point, however. My point was to be that I see everyone throwing out the race card like it's goin' outta style. I just want, for the accused's sake, to announce that I do not think the majority (read carefully, the MAJORITY) of people posting negative reviews are merely being racist. No. I think these people genuinely had bad experiences with her as a doctor. And it is unfair of this person to I am trying to find to post what they did, saying that they were certain this was all out of racist intent. Nor is it fair to justify calling oneself superior to someone of other descent (read carefully again, ANY other descent, not just white Americans) when one doesn't appreciate said descent making him or her feel inferior likewise. No one is superior to anyone except perhaps in knowledge. I think we all have something great to offer this country and this world. And I hope, for our country's sake, that our president will do great things. I don't care if he's black, white, or purple with pink freakin' polka dots. As long as he's doing what's right for our people (read carefully again, OUR people). We may be different in certain ways, but we are all people seeking compassion and progress, and all that is good. When segregation was ended in the sixties (I think), it should have been left there. Don't bring it back by feeding into delusions. By doing so, we set OURSELVES up for it. When we say little things like, "My people" (referring to our own race) we segregate ourselves. I know this probably won't make much sense to a lot of people, or maybe even to the person I intended to reach, but I am quite tired and nervous about tomorrow. I hope I bring enlightenment....it is never my intention to offend. I just want people to respect other people's opinions. And another thing I would like to address is the commenting on other people's sympathy desires. It may be true that this particular doctor is not keen to be sympathetic, and you may not care whether she is or not. But some people (like myself) have extremely hard times going to the family doctor, let alone a gynocologist. We like sympathetic doctors and are allowed to feel this way. We should find doctors that suit us, but we are allowed to feel this way, just as you are allowed to prefer a distant, stone-faced doctor. This is all I have to say.....please don't be rude in return...thanks. : )

I have two kids and Dr. Masterson delivered both. I'm her patient for almost 9yrs. She is THE BEST DOCTOR IN LA.
I had high risk pregnancies and she was there for me and she took care of me and because of her today I have two beautiful children. I love Dr. Lisa because she really cares for her patients.

I have been a patient of Dr. Masterson, and yes I agree she is overall a bad doctor. However this site should not be used as an outlet to express ignorance and racism.

I agree that she is rude and also that I had to wait over an hour both times I went to her. I overlooked my first experince and tried again. But the 2nd time my appt was at 1pm and the nurse told me she was lunch till 1:30, and no-one apologized for the wait or anything. But worse than ANY of the many little bad business stuff. I had a check up and then 2 days later discovered a sore on me so I called her office to come back in and have it examined. I described it to the nurse and asked if it could be warts or something. I was in a monogamous relationship and couldn't believe I had an std, but something was wrong. The nurse once again told me I did not need to come in so I listened. I still had itching for a while and finally a year later, I went to a new GREAT OBGYN (christine Adleberg at Cedars) and she informed me that it was herpes. So I had it for a year and didn't know and can't help but wonder if I didn't contract it at her office and that's why they smoothed it over and didn't want me to come in. I was in a 5 year monogamous relationship and my boyfriend tested negative. DO NOT GO TO HER!

Some of you here just need someone to hold your hands not a Doctor. Doctor are not here to hold your hands or be your best friends or laugh with you, They're here to make sure you're healthy and making sure that you treated for your diseases not to BE YOUR FRIENDS or listen to your complaints if you need someone to hold your hands get a shrink. If she screws up report her to the Medical Board. Stop Bitching and crying about not having a doctor to babysit you and listen to all of your problems.

Lisa Masterson delivered my baby a few years ago because my normal OB was on vacation. I was a bit worried when she came in with her long weave and a pound of make up on. I immediately thought, "OK now I have the young black doctor with the Gucci bag and the attitude." By the way I am black as well. She did not speak (typical black chick with an attitude) She did not smile (typical black chick with an attitude) I was shocked that she was a doctor. I had to look at her smock to make sure. My whole family was in the room so I just knew my mom was going to end up yelling at her.

To my surprise, she delivered my baby perfectly. She did not yell or say anything disrespectful, however she was not exactly friendly either. I tore really bad and she patched me up for an hour without saying a word. (Imagine that) I knew she was strange but as long as she did a safe delivery, who cares. I think she just isnt a people person and I would NEVER have chosen her to be my OB for the entire pregnancy. My real OB is black and amazing. Most black physicians that I know are amazing. They are not that into themselves. They truly love their craft and their patients. She is definitely an exception to the rule.

Though I did not experience it myself. I could totally see her yelling at you for calling on the weekends. She strikes me as the type of doctor you might see at the club. None the less, she seems to be an excellent physician. She is very experienced and has probably saved many lives. Sometimes God sends people here for a purpose that might not include being loved by all.

For those of you who say that it is impossible for Dr. Masterson to have done these crazy things. Please stop! I was with her for 2 hours and I already experienced her sweetness! lol You know that woman is a little off.

I became a patient about four years ago. I literally chose her from my provider's directory because I preferred a female doctor. Upon my first visit, it became clear that she was very established in not only the filed of medicine, but also as a celebrity doctor of sorts. I liked that she was charitable, educated and not white even though I am. I thought she seemed like a very special doctor. My first few visits were fine and mostly unmemorable.

Subsequent visits revealed more. My first instance of trouble stemmed from billing. I visited for my routine, annual exam and had nothing extraordinary done, however I received a bill for over $200. I spent months doing conference calls with my insurance company and her inept staff, only to learn that they had used the wrong billing code which cost me quite a lot considering my routine visits were to be fully covered.

Despite this, I continued to see her, but only for annual visits during which I was very clear about proper billing procedures. Prior to this, her demeanor had been sufficient, although not warm or caring. I reasoned that she must be very qualified and at least I had a sound medical expert for a doctor. The next annual check came sooner than it apparently should have, for she spent the first several minutes of my appointment arguing with a staff member over why I should not be allowed an appointment that day. All of this took place in front of me as I was reclined on the examination table without clothing...
She then proceeded to further lose her temper in front of me and gave me a very hasty, stern exam. She was short and clearly aggravated that I was there, sparing me no feelings of awkwardness for a mistake that was not mine, but her staff's. I was so upset that I vowed never to return again. The billing mistake was one thing, but mistreating me while I was in a vulnerable position was unbelievable to me. I could not comprehend her lack of a bedside manner, to say the least.

Soon after, I was preparing to move and it was time for my annual again. It had been a year since she treated me so rudely and I made the poor decision to return rather than spend time looking for another, very temporary doctor. By now, she had reached her full celebrity status (I guess) and had a male doctor filling in for her so she could pursue her television project. I thought this might be a good thing and, of course, that turned out to be wrong. Throughout the exam, he seemed very nervous and unprepared. He repeatedly asked me the same questions and clearly absorbed none of my responses. Worst of all, he left the room twice with me on the examination table and left the door ajar. This was not an accident because he never fully shut the door, but rather left it cracked open. I was in shock! I pointedly mentioned that he needed to close the door when he returned and when he left the room again, he left it ajar as he had done before. The female nurse assisting him provided zero help with keeping the door closed.

My overall summation of this practice and Dr. Masterson can be presented by looking at intentions. As you wait in the looby, the walls are full of clippings and quotations from various media outlets, notices of red-carpet fundraisers she sponsors and various propaganda asserting Dr. Masterson as a celebrity doctor of sorts. Based on my experiences with her and the staff, it is highly evident she is more interested in fame than medicine. In every area where a doctor should resonate, she lacks fundamentally and blatantly. My last visit was my LAST and I will wholeheartedly prevent any other woman from obtaining medical care there.

Very rude and cold. I went once and will never go back. I happen to live on Ocean Ave in Santa Monica, and I also happen to be black. Dr. Masterson was my worst experience with a Dr. ever! She should stick to her little TV gigs instead of dealing with actual patients. Her office however is very lovely and inviting. She however is NOT!

I also rarely write reviews, but I had to chime in because my experience with Dr. Masterson was the worst I've ever had with a doctor. I saw her only once about eight years ago while in college after first moving to LA. I had read an interview with her in a woman's magazine she came across as really kind and talked a lot about how much she enjoyed helping young women like myself who were just learning about good reproductive and sexual health. I was still really shy about having gyno exams as I was barely out of my teens and thought she would be a great choice for me. Her office was beautiful, looked more like a spa than a doctors office. However, I remember her staff seeming very cold and having to wait awhile before I was seen. When I finally saw her, she was the exact opposite of what I expected. She was rude, seemed in a hurry and immediately demanded to know what I was using for birth control. When I told her I wasn't currently in a relationship and therefore didn't need birth control on this visit, she gave me a disgusted look and started grilling me about life and why I wasn't sexually active at the moment. I remember her even telling me that bars were great places to go out and meet men. She made me feel so bad that I remember crying while she was examining me. She also emphatically insisted that I needed to be on birth control pills immediately as I have a hormonal imbalance called PCOS. I told her that I had been on them for awhile and that I'd had really bad side affects. My periods had been fairly regular in the last few years and my previous doctor had told me that as long as they were regular, I didn't need to be on the pill. Her cold response was that I needed to be back on the pill and that I would get cancer if I didn't. She then tried to get me to take a blood test, but I put my foot down there. I told her I didn't feel up to it that day and would call to schedule that on another day. She seemed really ticked off and left. I cried all the way home and felt miserable for the rest of the day. I eventually found a great OB/GYN who I love and have been going to ever since. She did not force me to go back on the pill for my imbalance and helped me find one I could deal with once I was back in a relationship again and need them. In recent years, I had to go off them again because I began to develop irregular breast lumps that my oncologist believes may have been stimulated by the pill and has forbidden me to ever be on them again. If I had followed Dr. Masterson's advice who knows what would have happened. She was completely unsympathetic, unprofessional, rude and gave me horrible medical advice. I also have a friend who discovered she was pregnant, didn't have a regular gyno and got Dr. Masterson's name from her insurance. Before her first scheduled appointment, my friend woke up in the middle of the night cramping and bleeding. She went to the emergency room and gave Dr. Masterson's name as her doctor. The nurse came back in the room and told her that she had called Dr. Masterson and that she was really rude, acted annoyed that she had been woken up and that she didn't know who my friend was. She told the hospital that my friend wasn't her patient yet and she wasn't interested in coming down and helping her out. My friend ended up having an early miscarriage, made all the worse by Dr. Masterson's attitude. She eventually called up her insurance and recommended that they remove her as one of their referred doctors. This woman should not be practicing medicine. STAY FAR AWAY FROM HER!

I do not like her or her staff and will never go back. The office is very chic and it has beautiful views of the Ocean which make it very relaxing. On the other hand, the staff are very cold. Dr. Masterson's behavior is downright arrogant. She is very shrewd and unsympathetic.
Going to the OB/GYN is an awkward, uncomfortable experience for any woman. To be treated unfairly and unprofessionally is not just an insult but also an emotionally abusive moment to be faced with.

Hello. I only saw this doctor on the Doctors and other tv shows, and I can not stand her. She reminds me of someone who works for a pharmaceutical company because it seems shes always promoting meds and unnecessary procedures. For example, she was promoting c-sections like it was an out patient procedure. From reading these reviews I now know why she promotes c-sections they're faster then vaginal births...total as*****. On the show she is condescending to her guest which I find unbelievable. The show is better off without that quack.

Dr. Masterson has been my Ob/Gyn for almost 10 years and delivered both of my children. I can't say enough good things about her. She is bright, thoughtful and caring, everything you would want in a physician. She remembers my children's names and asks about them. She seems very up to date on medical information relating to her field as she treats in different stages of my life. As a working professional and now a single mom, I have found that she has always been understanding and supportive in all we've discussed. I was almost 40 when my first child was born and almost 42 when my second child was born. She helped me with all the special concerns relating to being an older mom. Labor for both of my children was induced and required monitoring throughout. It ended up that my second child had the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck twice, which put stress on his little heart throughout labor and delivery. It was a complicated situation that could have turned out badly. Dr. Masterson was extraordinarily calm, supportive and managed the birth perfectly. Her timing in delivery as she unwrapped the cord showed me how experienced she is. I still am amazed today when I think about it and see how wonderful my son is, thanks to Dr. Masterson's attention, skill and concern.

Again as someone previously put I am not used to putting my opinion out there per say on the intranet But in defense to this wonderful MD, I would like to say that Dr. Lisa was fantastic, knowledgeable, friendly, and an obvious expert in her field. I am a peds hem/onc RN and am accustomed to poor bed side manners in physicians alongside those who seem to have wonderful bedside manners and a horrible knowledge base which goes along with scary MD decisions that can place a patient at risk. Although, I did not see a terrible bedside manner as a problem with Dr. Lisa Masterson. She is a terrific doctor with a wonderful knowledge base and excellent surgery skills and she saved my baby. I recommend her to anyone who wants a skilled and excellent physician. If you want a patronizer for the drama most women come up with during the 10 mo journey into motherhood then go to someone else. But if you want security and peace of mind for you and the outcome of your journey she is amazing. My only complaint would be of her staff who I really did not care for and found incompetent. However, for the expertise and physician excellence I found in Dr. Lisa's performance I would wait again 1-2hrs for 15min of her time. She was excellent and you should only hope to have as a physician someone who could stand shoulder to shoulder with this woman. She saves lives and maybe she didn't smile long enough for you while doing so but she is an amazing doctor and skills are what matters not personal opinions on whether or not she said hi on your first visit. This woman is busy because she is good! Good luck to all of you.

Race has nothing to do with people's opinions. We should stop playing the race card. President Obama does not sanction that behavior, anyway (this is to the person who mentioned our President).
I am African American and had a horrible experience with Dr. Masterson. It was my first and would be my last visit to Dr. Masterson's office. She was condescending and unprofessional. She would not even say hello to a first time patient. After waiting nearly an hour in the beautiful (and mostly white colored) waiting area, the nurse came in to talk to me. I insisted on speaking to the doctor. So, I was banished to a room for being a bad girl and requesting to speak to the doctor.
After about 15 minutes, Dr. Masterson came in. I felt as if I was in the principal's office. Her body language was so obviously disrespectful. She wanted to know why I'd asked to see her! She answered my questions and it was clear that she was impatient and irritated.
I'm a trial attorney and not often intimidated or annoyed by a person's attitude. This time, however, I felt these emotions. So, I've found another OB/GYN, who's also African American... And I love her!

Seems to me the doctor is a no -bull straight shooter, like one of the posters -you are outside the country you have a problem and you call her , commonsense says that if you are that worried you should go to the ER,what is she supposed to do , grow wings and fly out to solve your problem maybe she doesn't go for a whole lot of hand holding, it seems that the people that love her like her straightforward approach and the ones that don't are looking for someone to cater to their 'drama'

I'm certain that 99% of these reviews are from persons of non-African descent and ancestry whom are simply and clearly manifesting, projecting, and espousing their race- hatred for Lisa through these anonymous posts.

Face it, your blood boils at the thought of a black person who has become socially, professionally, and economically superior to you and who is performing work that you cannot (because of low test scores, lack of intelligence, poor life decision making).

These snarky, pithy, sardonic comments to me mask your true nature and intent, and that is to sully the reputation of this bright African-American doctor.

This behavior is symptomatic of what we call 'new-style racism', a racism that is characteristically institutional as it is cloaked with other rationale and reasoning, but to the trained eye & mind is nothing more that clandestine race-hatred.

NBC would not cast her and utilize her expert opinion on 'The Dr.'s' if she was not fully and completely qualified and her background & qualifications fully vetted.

Don't be hateful people. It really does nothing for you or your cause, is in poor taste, and makes you ugly ; -).

Accept that fact that people of African descent are your equals (and in many cases, your superiors!), are doctors, lawyers, and engineers, and yes, even the leader of the most powerful country in the world!! (yes, YOUR LEADER ).

One of the rudest people I have ever met in my life. She has no business practicing medicine. She is only in it for the money and the fame. I STRONGLY suggest you do not trust her with your health or the health of your unborn baby.

Dr. Masterson has been my ob for eight years. I have had a wonderful experience with her. Last year with my second baby, my water broke at 26 weeks and I was in the hospital for 11 weeks. She and Linda (receptionist) were wonderful to me. She visited me regularly and always stayed to make sure I was coping okay. She took the time to explain everything and made sure I understood what was going on. She even brought me presents to keep me from going stir crazy from bed rest. My baby is now four months old and she is perfect! I credit Dr. Masterson as one of the people who was central to helping me get through a very difficult and scary time in my life.

I was looking up Dr. Masterson's office number and was amazed that her review rating was so low. I never generally post reviews, but after reading some of the negative reviews, I had to share my positive experience with her. I have been going to see Dr. Masterson for about 4 years now and I have no complaints. When I first went to see her, I got the impression of someone very smart and sure of her practice. She didn't act like my best friend, but she was friendly and informative and ever since I have never looked back. I have had bad experience with Ob's in the past and am very picky. After my initial visit, I felt like I could trust her and thankfully that has been true. As for my medical history, she zoomed in on that immediately and always made sure things were good each visit. Sure, sometimes I had to wait to be seen... but really, what doctor's office is any different? She is the only doctor in her practice, so again, if she had to reschedule due to a delivery - then that's what you have to expect. Also, I did make the mistake of calling her during the night after my first delivery and she was rather "short" with me on the phone; but, afterwards I realized that it was the wrong thing for me to have done. I was a little green to emergencies and very hormonal/nervous and didn't even think to call the hospital first. I apologized at my following visit. Other than that "wake-up call" on my part, Dr. Masterson has always been very professional and kind towards me.As for being self-absorbed, Dr. Masterson is a giving person. I know of one charity event she hosts every spring to help remote countries provide better healthcare to pregnant women. I think people are expecting too much of her and may be self-absorbed themselves to demand such personal attention from their doctor. Granted, mistakes do happen and I can totally understand if someone had a horrific delivery - how scary and terrible that must be! - but, for me I had a positive experience and I wanted to share it. Dr. Masterson seems genuine and I would highly recommend her. My first baby was delivered naturally and my second by c-section. I also had Placenta Previa with my second baby and she made sure I was on Bed Rest early on and visited me at the hospital about twice a week! She was always reachable by the hospital staff and the staff didn't seem to hate her at all. Having been at the hospital for so long, it is hard for me to imagine that any staff would hate a doctor who successfully delivers babies - at the same time, staff do have their favorites, too. In these instances, I really think these are women who have an axe to grind for some slight they received and/or are disgruntled that Dr. Masterson is now on a successful TV program. As a woman, I am very happy for her. I mean, they could have only chosen male doctors for the show and I am happy to have a female speaking for us. All in all, what counts here is that for me, she successfully delivered my two boys and for that I'll always be grateful. I have heard so many horror stories about labor and delivery, and I am so relieved that neither of mine are one of them! My boys and I appreciate you Dr. Masterson. Thank you.

Dr. Masterson was the OB for my first pregnancy. Since I had a horrible experience, I switched to another OB for my second pregnancy. During a routine blood test, my second doctor discovered that I never contracted chicken pox as a child. She was surprised that Dr. M did not pick this up during my first pregnancy (yes, I also had a first trimester blood test performed at her office). Since it is very dangerous to get chicken pox as an adult - never mind while pregnant! - I now have to avoid situations where I may contract the disease - no small task given that I have a toddler at home. Had Dr. M been more careful, I would have gotten my immunization shots right after my first delivery (which I am going to do as soon as I deliver #2). Now I have to spend the rest of my pregnancy feeling as if something is hanging over my head rather than completely enjoying this wonderful experience again

I used to see Dr. Masterson but she's an awful doctor. On 2 occasions I drove from my office (1-hour drive) to see her, only to be told by her staff that she'd left to deliver babies. "Didn't anybody call you?" they'd ask? No, they did. I got tired of waiting 90 minutes the times I did get to see her so I finally made an appt. for the first thing in the day. She didn't even arrive till 75 minutes after my appt./her first appt. of the day. No excuses from her staff. There were 7 other women waiting with me at that time. Finally after 90 minutes I saw her. Ridiculous. She also had a terrible bedside manner, even when she told me I appeared to have cervical cancer. At least she referred me to a good oncologist. Good riddance to Dr. Masterson. So glad I'll never see her again.

I should have known that there would be a problem after having to wait an hour after the time of our appointment at her office. I just had a bad feeling about her.

She has an awful bedside manner, is abrupt and condescending, and always seems pressed for time.

During the delivery of my second daughter, she pulled too hard and tore a nerve in my child's left arm. She had a deep black and blue bruise and was unable to move the arm. There was a serious possibility that the nerve was permanently torn and that she would never have the use of her arm, elbow and hand. The lack of movement persisted for months. Needless to say, we were totally freaked out, stressed and couldn't sleep.

No call backs from the office. No note or contact indicating any concern or remorse. Nothing from this so-called doctor.

Thank Almighty God she healed over a period of six months. Our daughter now has about 95% functionality, and we hope that she will eventually have total use of her arm.

Please, for heaven's sake, do not entrust your wife or child to the care of this evil person. She is a lousy, malevolent doctor, and should not be practicing at all.
Run, run as fast as you can. She is dangerous.

I have been a patiend of Dr. Lisa Masterson since the mid 1990's and I greatly appreciate the wonderful service that she has provided me. She is very knowledgeable, considerate, and continues to show nothing but care towards my health needs. Hadn't it been for Dr. Masterson's proper diagnosis and treatment towards my health problems, I would be in bad condition today. I believe that she genuinely cares about the health of women and unborn babies. I am very happy to be a patient of Dr. Masterson and I highly recommend her to any women that is seeking great medical care. Keep up the great work Dr. Masterson; I think you're fantastic!

I too never write reviews but felt VERY COMPELLED to write this review...I have a few notes to warn people about.

1) in regards to PR, I was friends with someone on her pr team (don't want to be too specific since I don't want to get them in trouble) but they said they were at The Ivy for lunch and she got a call about one of her clients going into labor and when my friend said "shouldn't you go now" she told her that she could finish her meal that she would probably take a little while before she would actually give birth! Just so you know where she stands with patiens

2) Although I am a young mom (was in late twenties when I gave birth to twins) I had trouble getting pregnant due to cysts, but finally did get (naturally) pregnant and wound up with twins...before I reached my 3rd month (the "safety zone") I had blood and called from out of the country on a weekend. When I asked if I should be concerned she rudely said "If you are that worried, go to the emergency room, I can't see you when you are out of the country so there isn't anything I can do" No reassurance, no caring attitude, more of a "you bothered me on the weekend" attitude...BUT this was not the worst...the rest of my pregnancy she was wonderful and I forgot about the whole bleeding incident (which ended up being nothing to worry about and I did go to the emergency room who reassured me it was nothing)..I figured that she had a point...what could she do, maybe I caught her at a bad time.

2) she said to call any time with concerns. She was very caring in her office and was so sweet to me (now looking back maybe it was becasue I was pregnant with twins...her favorite...more money and almost guaranteed c-section) It wasn't until 3am on a Saturday that I had to call her because I felt water flowing slowly as I was on the toilet and it didn't seem normal. I called her (feeling this is most likely an emergency situation) and said that I think my water just broke...he coldly said, put a pad on and go back to bed, if it is soaked when you wake up then you can go in to get checked out (I was a little more than 1 month early at this point)..I said "I think it is more water than normal...I really think my water broke.." She said "GO BACK TO BED AND PUT ON A PAD AND IF IT IS SOAKED WHEN YOU WAKE UP CALL BACK" she scolded me like a child...literally talked down to me as if I was a child...

It ended up my water did break and I did go into surgery...while in there she never spoke to me once while I was going through my c-section...never made eye contact or anything...then when the whole thing was over I never saw her...she didn't come into the recovery room once to see how I was doing...the ONLY positive thing about the experience (besides my beautiful twins!) is that I had minimal scarring...that is about all....she is a great doctor..she does a good job but when giving birth you should have someone that cares about you and your children...she has NO bedside manner whatsoever...she is not a nice woman...and I have heard this from other people as well...and not just on here. As long as you don't call her on the weekends or when she has something else to do, she will be nice to you...but don't expect a great experience. PLEASE..>TRUST ME...if you are looking to have a baby or are not too far along in your pregnancy...GO ELSEWHERE!! She may be a good doctor but her priorities are NOT in the right place when it comes to her patients.

I am very surprised to hear any negative postings for Dr. Masterson. I recenlty left a Dr. who was absolutely the worst I have ever had. I found Dr. Masterson and her staff to be very warm and friendly. Unlike many other offices that are white and cold, Dr. Masterson office was beautiful and warm. I was asked by her nurse in the exam room if I was cold and when I responded yes, they turned on a space heater for me. I felt very comfortable asking questions. I was impressed with some of the newer technology they offered to detect abnormal breast cells. I left the office feeling very well taken care of and respected for being a women. I would reccomend Dr. Masterson to anyone.

Like many of the people here, I have never written any online reviews. But my experience with Dr. Masterson has been so appalling, I feel like I have no choice. I, too, waited an hour for my first appointment with Dr Masterson, which she rushed through.

I recently went to the ER b/c of some pain, and found out I have a complex ovarian cyst. The ER told me to see my GYN immediately. When I called to make an appointment, her nurse said she doesn't work on Wednesdays and they couldn't help me. The nurse actually told me I should find another doctor if I think this is an emergency.

I suppose Dr. Masterson told them to fit me in, because they called me back and said she should see me ASAP. She coldly told me it could be cancer. She spent not even 5 minutes with me and leaves. Nothing else. I deserved more information than she told me.

I have been awaiting test results from her, that were supposed to arrive yesterday, and nobody from her office called me. I called to ask about them, and one of the nurses told me that if tests are normal, the staff simply files them away and doesn't call. NOT what Dr Masterson told me. Needless to say, I never got a call back from the staff. So I'm waiting over the weekend for a test that supposedly is supposed to tell me if I may have cancer. She never called to ask me how I'm doing - just tells me I might have cancer and washes her hands with it.

I called on a Saturday because I thought I might be having a medical emergency (but wasn't sure, since I'm not a doctor), and she yelled at me. Didn't even remember who I was (she told me about the cancer 2 days ago), asked if I was pregnant (I'm NOT) and yelled at me for calling. Said if I was really worried, I'd just have to get squeezed in on Monday so she could look at my charts.

She's a professional, and weekends are an expected part of that job for any professional, let alone a doctor. I have never encountered a professional so cold and unprofessional. I didn't know she'd been on Oprah and Dr. Phil or I NEVER would have gone to see her. This just makes it worse. Please don't waste your time seeing her. Her staff is rude, and she is worse. Run, run, run away.

I had a wonderful experience in Dr. Masterson's office. She has a great bedside manner, and never made me feel embarrassed about any of my questions. She spent a lot of time with me, and I never felt rushed. I have her to thank for my new baby!

I have been a patient of Dr. Masterson for many years. I have never had to wait and I can usually get in and out in under an hour. The office is beautiful and serene and in a fantastic location. She is honest and will tell the patient the truth rather than any coddling. I respect her for this. I needed to lose 5 pounds and she got on me about it. She is absolutely correct. My health will be affected by a few pounds here and there.

I know some people would not be pleased with this but not everyone likes to hear the truth. She is very sweet and takes time to answer all my questions.

I am very pleased with her as my physician.

I started seeing Dr. M as my gyno right after I moved to LA in 1997. I have always had a good experience and liked her so much that I continued seeing her during my pregnancy, even though I had moved to Long Beach. Yes, I drove to Santa Monica for every appt. And yes, sometimes I did have to wait in the office for quite a while and yes, sometimes my appts did get changed, but she's an OB/GYN - babies come when they want. My daughter was born five weeks ago and both my husband and I were very happy with the entire experience.

I share the same feelings as most of these other posts. Now that I have read these, it definitely helps aid in my decision to look for a new doctor.

I have been going to Dr. M for a few years now, and I thought she was very nice. My husband and I recently decided that we want to try getting pregnant. Unfortunately, I have been having some difficulties, so I have been going to the office more frequently than my usual check-ups. When I first told her that we wanted to get pregnant, she was very sincere and wanted to figure out was was wrong with me right away. This is where the problems began. See the following:

1. One of the times I went for my appointment, the office was closed because they were having a meeting (which I did not find out until later). I had to wait 15 minutes before they opened the door. At no time did any of the staff or Dr. M apologize for keeping me waiting. On top of that, they kept me waiting in the exam room another 20 min., even though there were no other patients at the time.

2. One of the times I went to get blood work done first thing in the morning, I walked in and all of the staff completely ignored me. They thought I was there to deliver some magazines that happened to be on their front porch. Due to the fact that I have recently been to the office a few times, you would think I would at least look familiar as a patient, even though they don't know my name.

3. Trying to get information out of anyone is like pulling teeth. Not knowing was is going on with me, you would think their experience would help guide me through the process as to the things I need to do. I only get bits and pieces and constantly have to call to see if my results have come in.

I am very disappointed that Dr. M first seemed so eager to help me fix my problem so I can focus on getting pregnant, but now it seems like they are taking their sweet time.

Today is 8/27/2008. This is actually my second review of this doctor so forgive the 3/27/08 date. Its been over a year since I was a patient of hers and I will NEVER go back or recommend her to anyone. I hate the fact the she has her own TV show now, because she is a horrible doctor. Her bedside manner is horrific. She is rude, condescending, and acts as if you are bothering her because he made and appointment and sought medical attention. Not to mention that her staff is just as rude and uncaring as she is. The simply do not take care of business with the insurance company or pharmacy. The last time I saw her I had had my second miscarriage. She made me feel like it was my fault. She did a D&C, but failed to get all the fetal tissue out. So, needless to say I passed the tissue over the next week. It was so painful and horrible. There was no reason for me to have the D&C if I was going to have the miscarriage naturally anyway. About the D&C. She was late. I was laying in the operating room with all the nurses just waiting for her. Then she goes on vacation or out of town or whatever she wasn't around. Anyway, she left me in the care of another doctor. The other doctor called me about five days after the D&C and told me to go to the emergency room after he had reviewed my ultrasound. Incidentally I bled for about 12 days after the surgery. At any rate, soon after the other doctor called me Dr. Masterson's nurse called me and told me to disregard anything that the other doctor had told me. She said that she talked to Dr. Masterson and she did not think it was necessary to go to the emergency room. She said I was fine and take naproxen. Confused, I did not go to the emergency room until I woke up at about 11:00pm that night in unbearable pain. I ended up spending the night in the hospital while I passed the rest of the fetal tissue. I was a terrible experience. Upon her return Dr. Masterson called for what I thought was 'how are you' call. However, she told me that she had gotten some test results and that I had Lupus and I should see a specialist. No explanation as to what Lupus is or referral to a specialist. How is one to know what kind of specialist to see? She was to matter-of-fact, and uncaring I could not believe she was calling me at work to tell me I had a disease. Long story short, I did find a specialist, and I do not have Lupus. Right now I am 7 months pregnant and having a wonderful pregnancy thanks in part to the wonderful care I am receiving at Cedar's. My current OB/GYN is absolutely wonderful! I had a pain in my upper abs during my 5Th month. I had an ultrasound for suspected problems with my gallbladder. My results were negative but my current OB/GYN called me to check on me. He called at about 7pm one night and said he was just calling to see how I was feeling. Now that's a caring doctor! No yelling, or fault finding - just genuine care. All this being said I would not take my dog to Dr. Masterson. And if you reading this review in search of a doctor - beware. I would like most you post here are not trying to ruin anyone. What we say is the truth. She should not be practicing. She does not care. Well maybe if you are a celebrity she cares. But if you are a normal working person paying by insurance - please find or pick another doctor. Don't let the TV personality fool you. And for the poster (Amy) that says she is a good judge of people and knows she is a good person - well you missed the ball on this one. You never met her in person so you could not relate to what we, actual patients, are saying. She is a terrible doctor and maybe she should just give advise on TV instead of seeing patients. I reiterate - if you are looking for a OB/GYN - keep looking. Go to Cedar's. Don't have the unfortunate experience that many of us had.

I absolutely loved Dr. Masterson. Im a 23 year old college student from Chicago. Her in LA i had horrible experiences with doctors. Dr. Masterson and all the other workers were so friendly to me. Its a very small place, so they know your name when you walk in the door. I was very sick with hyperemesis through my pregnancy and she was always more than willing to write me a note for school, or give me a prescription. Dr. Masterson always answered any question i had in ways that i could understand it and never treated me like a kid. She was great during delivery and in the few appointments i had over the next few weeks. i would definitely recommend her and if i was not moving back to Chicago after school, i would definitely go back to her for my next pregnancy.

i never have written anything on the internet either but i wanted to echo EVERYTHING and more that was said. she is the WORST doctor i have ever seen. she made my first pregnancy a scary and uncomfortable experience. thank god i switched half way through as it made all the difference in the world. her office never returns calls, they lost test results, gave me a false diagnosis....SCARY stuff that this woman is allowed to practice medicine. not only is she unfriendly and seemingly a bad doctor, the office staff is so disorganized, rude, and incompetent. i had actually heard she lost her license....a pregnancy is such an emotional and wonderful experience. i urge you to go through it with support and proper medical care.

I waited an hour for my first appointment with Dr Masterson, which she rushed through. Nobody ever apologized for the wait.

I recently went to the ER b/c of some pain, and found out I have a complex ovarian cyst. The ER told me to see my GYN immediately. When I called to make an appointment, her nurse said she doesn't work on Wednesdays and they couldn't help me. The nurse told me I should find another doctor if I think this is an emergency.

I suppose Dr. Masterson told them to fit me in, because they called me back and said she should see me ASAP. She coldly told me it could be cancer. She spent not even 5 minutes with me and left. I deserved more information than she told me.

I have been awaiting test results from her that were supposed to arrive yesterday. Nobody from her office called me. I called to ask about them, and one of the nurses told me that if tests are normal, the staff files them away and doesn't call.
