First of all I want to say that this specialist, Dr. Karkow, and associates did help my TMJ. I went to them because i had had TMJ for years and one day my jaw locked shut. i couldnt even open it wi enough to eat a sandwhich. I am most certainly not "cured" by any means. I still have to wear my mouthpiece from time to time when I get stressed and my jaw gets tight. It does improve things, though.
This leads me to my issues with this office. First of all, the doctor lied to me. I asked her if stress had anything to do with my TMJ. She said absolutely not. A few appointments later I told her the pain/tightness was getting worse and she asked "Oh, are you under a lot of stress?" Hmmm, why would she ask me that if it wasnt affected by it??? My only guess would be that maybe this treatment isn't all that effective. I've heard chiropractors can fix it, but that's just something I've heard. Can't say that her lie built my confidence in this process, that's for sure. Indeed, in my experience, stress does worsen the tightness.

The second issue is that they misquoted me what this whole thing would cost. They were off... by $400. I called the billing office and kindly protested it and in response they were rude. Very, very rude. I've never felt so degraded before just because I questioned their quoting process. Someone got it wrong and my husband and I determined it was not insurance. They kept saying over and over "it's just a quote and it's a courtesy for our customers". Hate to break it to you but it's no courtesy if it's hundreds of dollars WRONG. Why bother with a quote if it's going to be that far off? i can understand a few dollars off but $400 more?? That's not normal. However, I never got an apology or even an acknowledgement of the incredible inconvenience they caused me. Make sure you verify their quote with your insurance before you go for it. I should have done this, so it was mostly my fault. However a tiny bit of courtesy from their office would have been awesome. Still makes me mad to think about it.
The third issue is that while I was trying to figure out the whole billing problem, the office called me to schedule my next appointment. I had received my mouthpiece and been using it and had already been back to see them a few times. I didn't call back because I didn't want to schedule another appointment until the bill was resolved. They called me back a 2nd time and left me a message that had the tone of a collections call (which I know because I was a collector) which patronizingly said that I needed call back and make an appointment. I did call back at that point and let her know that I would not be coming in until the billing issue was resolved. That was the last contact I had with the doctor's office. I tried to resolve the issue with their billing office but got nowhere and had to pay upwards of $800 for their services when I was quoted around $400. Needless to say, I didn't go back.
My advice: try a chiropractor first. Would probably help more than just your jaw and will probably cost a whole lot less. If it doesn't work, at least you've adjusted your back. :)

Horrible chair side manner; inconsistent advise and instructions; doesn't remember what she says from one visit to the next. Beware the costs mount quickly. I was fitted for a splint which wasn't done correctly but she refused to see me for 4 weeks to correct the mistake. PLEASE seek TMJ treatment elsewhere. This woman is awful and I can't stress that enough. She guaranteed 100% effective treatment at the first visit so we would start the money meter running with xrays and splint making.

I wish I would have trusted my instincts and ignored the very small amount of positive reviews I read about Dr. Karkow. Those reviews are obviously bogus because the lady is as unprofessional as they come. I invested over 6 months of my time and money with her (with no improvement & more pain) and during my last appointment she also brought me to tears. She was defensive and accusatory just because I had not improved the way she thought I should have. She was saying that I said things that I did not say. I think she likes you if you improve, but if you don??t improve, she is annoyed by you! She is like Jeckyll and Hyde! I can??t go back to her! It was the MOST uncomfortable experience I??ve ever had in a doctor??s office. I think she tries to get rid of patients who don??t improve because we are messing with her success rate percentages. If she gets us to stop coming, then she can write it off as we quit the process! Don??t let her sympathetic, sweet initial approach fool you! She is the WORST doctor I have ever experienced!!!

She got mad at me when I didn't improve. Rude office staff reflects poorly on the doctors. They send patients for extensive and expensive physical therapy. They don't tell you up front how much it will cost.
