I agree with another reviewer that he screwed me over with surgery that did not help and definitely was a very low point in my life. My smile even looks more crooked afterward, something that I did not expect. I was not looking to fix that aspect of my smile, but I certainly wasn't looking to make it worse. When I brought this up he said my smile was crooked before, but now in my opinion it is more apparent in photos than before.
And aside from that, what I wanted to fix the most by having the procedure, didn't improve at all, not even a tiny bit. I wanted my lips to close naturally when my face is at rest so that the top and bottom lip touch and he knew this because I had mentioned this as something that bothered me greatly and that I was looking specifically to fix that with the surgery. But after shortening my jaw it did not fix that problem at all. I feel like the open mouth gives me a fish face look.
The gummyness of my smile was mild beforehand, esp if you look at the typical candidate for this procedure that truly has the long face syndrome as per a very large gummy smile problem. But like I said my big hang up was more the fact that my lips don't meet as explained above. I would not have done this procedure just to lessen the gumminess of my smile by some amount that is so miniscule that people cannot tell I had anything done, esp since I did not have as bad a gummy smile as most candidates for upper jaw shortening have. People I have shown the before and after photos to could not tell which were the before photos and which the after photos and actually they guessed it in reverse so people actually think I looked better BEFORE I had the surgery. This included my own nieces. Not what one wants to pay $26,000 for.
So had I known in advance of a strong possibility of the lips still not meeting after the procedure, that people would either not be able to tell I had it done or that they would think the before photo was the better photo, I would not have gone thru with it. In the pre-op computer simulation photo/drawing he gave me, he showed me being able to have what I wanted, the lips coming together perfectly. This simulation led me to have a totally unreasonable expectation of what the end result would be.
And being cosmetic only for me and not fixing a dental/medical problem with bite, chewing or speaking, I had to pay the $26,000 cost without the help of health insurance. I had to save for years all to end up unhappy, depressed, angry and very disappointed.
I don't recall him telling me either that my teeth and gums would hurt/be tender/sensitive forever afterward. I still can't bite hard foods today or even just sneeze without feeling discomfort. My teeth are way more sensitive to cold too. This is 1.5 years post op.
I'm not saying he hasn't done worthwhile surgeries for others who had more than just cosmetic concerns as per others I saw in the office or posted on his website. But if you have a cosmetic only situation, especially one that is unique as was mine, I would NOT recommend him. And just the fact that he would take money for a cosmetic only procedure where I believe he knew he wasn't going to make much of a change in my appearance, and knew it was a financial hardship and extreme sacrifice to pay for it, just makes me question his integrity and principals. Now I know why several other jaw surgeons declined to do the procedure. They felt they could not achieve the result I was looking for and would not make me make a huge sacrifice for nothing. I appreciate their honesty to think I would not want to go thru all that and spend mine and my father's retirement incomes on something that was not going to achieve the result I'm looking for.
I think it just shows a lack of principal for a surgeon to give me what I feel was a totally inaccurate computer simulation that influenced my decision to go ahead with the procedure and left me expecting an unrealistic and unachievable result.
I had what they call ??gummy smile?. I am a 14 year old girl with an embarrassing smile. In middle school everyone is out there to make fun of you and make you feel bad about yourself. Everyone has their own flaws. Mine was my smile. I had many nick names, such as: Mrs.Gummy, Gummy mouth, Donkey, and Gummy. It was so bad that even teachers called me these nick names. They didnt understand why I was called those names, they thought it was just for fun. What they didn??t know was it wasn??t for fun. It was just cruel names students called me. It got so bad that my own best friends made fun of me. That really didn??t bother me that much but what really got me was when my own boy friend caught on with it and called me those names.
I finally decided that this needed to stop. I went to Dr.Supers office and they said that my smile would be all fixed and that I would have a smile to die for. After they finished, I was no longer ??Gummy? I was now ??perfect smile?. I love my results and my smile. Now I can be at school not worrying about what name they will call me. I smile proudly all thanks to Dr. Super.
I've had tooth extractions in the past when I had braces. I later learned that all the pain I went through wasn't needed because I never had to have those teeth pulled in the 1st place to make room in my mouth for the braces. After that I never trusted any dentists or oral surgeons until I met Dr. Super. He was very helpful and explained everything really well. After I had my wisdom teeth pulled I healed quickly and didn't have any pain. The friendly staff checked up on me by texting me and made sure I was doing well. I recommend Dr. Super to everyone who is still afraid to go to the dentist.
Save your time and money, and see someone else. After waiting a considerable amount of time, I didn't even see Dr. Stuart Super (although I did get to hear him loudly arguing about a bill in his office. Classy.)
I ended up seeing another doctor who was incredibly patronizing and tried to sell me another splint. Even though I had already purchased a custom-made splint from a previous doctor, he was convinced his "simpler" device (a.k.a., not molded to my teeth and of a far shoddier quality) would be better. Of course, he told me not to tell my other doctor he had said that.
I got to hear gems like "If it were my family member..." as though he were a used car salesman. And I was also warned not to find any more orthodontists "off the street." My prior doctor and dentist are a Ivy League med school graduates. The only credentials I'm worried about are yours.
My condition was consistently downgraded by him due to my age and gender, and when I expressed hesitation about purchasing his splint, he told me to take a high dosage of painkillers to combat the pain. He then asked if the pain was monthly. Um, I wouldn't have traveled to his office if it wasn't a daily problem. After telling him the frequency of the discomfort, he told me I couldn't take such a high dosage daily.
In battling this condition for four years, I've never seen a doctor so eager to make a quick buck by selling a shoddy device instead of actually attempting to alleviate a patient's pain.
