She is not a good doctor. She prescribed medication that made me more depressed and suicidal. Most of the time do not reply to calls, and when finally return a call is very rude. Changed to another doctor and in 2 days under the care of the new physician I was felling better under a totally different medication. I would not recommend her for my worst enemy.

I saw Dr. Wellman for a couple of years for Panic Attacks. I am happy to report I do not have them anymore.

Generally, she's a very good doctor, but there are some things you have to know before you go, to understand if she is the doctor for you. She has rules about how she runs her practice.

1) First, let me say that Dr. Wellman is a PSYCHIATRIST and MEDICATIONS SPECIALIST. She is NOT a THERAPIST!!!
Dr. Wellman does not do therapy. She treats Psychiatric symptoms that require MEDS, and interacts well with YOUR THERAPIST. You will need a separate Therapist, MSW, Counselor, Social Worker for your Therapy. I highly advise getting one besides. Medication only fixes the symptoms. You must get to the root of the cause, understand through therapy and then effect changes in your thinking and life to expect a change in the way you feel. That, along with a medication regimen if necessary, will get you positive changes that you seek.

One FANTASTIC therapist that I know has worked for years with Dr. Wellman, is:

Harriet Breslow, MSW
Potomac, MD
301-983-1321

I highly recommend Mrs. Breslow. She is a no nonsense Therapist, and will greatly help you move in a positive direction with your issues. You will not get the common: "What do you think you should do"? BS as you might get with pother Therapists. With Mrs. Breslow. You will proactively, and diligently work on your issues and you will see great changes in your life that will make you happy and proud of yourself! Every suggestion she has given me and personal referral was excellent! I personally, loved, loved, loved her!

2) You must realize that doctors get "stiffed" & patients don't pay their bills. That being said, Dr. Wellman is thorough about getting your billing information, upfront, along with a "Promise to Pay Agreement" that every patient signs. If you do not pay, she will collect. She will not let you slide. I do understand. Every provider needs to be paid. Medical treatment of any kind is not charity. She will work out a payment plan if you ask, but she will enforce all payment agreements.

3) Dr Wellman doesn't play games. If you're looking for a Dr. who hands out prescriptions freely and doesn't care about seeing you for a year or more for a follow-up, go elsewhere. Malpractice is rampant. She's medicating people. It's her responsibility to follow you, make sure you're OK, and she will require you to come in regularly (maybe monthly) until you feel like your medication is working well, then you will need to go back 2-4x per year thereafter, if no changes are necessary.

Blood testing is very important. One Depression and Anxiety medication, is now reported to cause Diabetes! Which is a serious disease. If your blood sugar is on the rise you need to know early to stop or switch medications. You will not know unless blood is drawn 2x per year. ASK FOR IT! Be proactive about your own health.

4) Demeanor: Dr. Wellman does not have "A warm fuzzy personality". She is very, very business-like. maybe too much for some folks. But she is an excellent medications doctor. You should choose her because you want a doctor to advise you regarding medications, not because you want a "feel-good" person. She is not that. If you want a soft, caring person, I would recommend getting that in your Social Worker/Therapist who you would see weekly.

5) Office cleanliness: Her office is fine. I don't know what some of the other reviewers were saying about her office being a mess? It's orderly. Negative reviewers just saying false things- trying to hurt her business due to other issues (maybe they didn't pay and she enforced her payment policies, or she insisted they come in before renewing prescriptions)? If you don't come in for your appointment regularly as she told you is required, she will not renew your prescriptions.

6) Appointment times: Dr. Wellman runs on "German time". On time means on time. If you are too late and you can't have your appointment, it will be too bad for you and you will have to pay for that appointment and reschedule. -Just be on-time if not early and you will not have any problem with her.

7) Response times: Dr. Wellman does return calls exactly as stated on her answering machine. You can count on that. You will need to leave a message on the voice mail, and she will call you back as stated (same or next day). She does not communicate via email. She does not return emergency crisis calls immediately. That is the way she works.

If you can live with the above, she will be an excellent medications (only) doctor for you.

I have been a patient of Dr. Wellman's for 13+ years. She is a wonderful, caring physician. She always returns phone calls the same day, is easy to talk to, compassionate, and I feel like she really cares about me. Only once did I have to wait (about 20 minutes); however, she came out and explained she was dealing with a patient emergency and apologized for the wait. I have already recommended her to others (even family members) who have had the same experience. I can't imagine why she has received so many poor reviews. Doesn't even sound like the same doctor!

She is not a doctor. She is a drug dealer. Don't get me wrong, if you know what drugs you want (or need), and know the symptoms you need to present to qualify for that drug, you can get basically anything you want. For example, I wanted adderall to help me study, and even though I def dont have ADD and always had great grades, she went ahead and started me on a crazy dose of 40 mg a day. I felt like I was gonna have a heart attack when I played sports, but hey she got paid right? As she scribbles down notes during the brief sessions (probably just doodles and crossword puzzles), you can sense the wheels turning in her head.."how can I get this person out of here in the next 5 minutes?" It is alarming to me that people like her can get liscenced. You would think somewhere during the clinical exams and training some supervisor would realize this lady does not care about any of her patients. She is virtually worthless, however she is pretty nice on the surface and will give you the drugs you want. Good doctor? NO. Good drug dealer? Yes

DO NOT bother with this doctor. Don't waste your time or money (which is what she is in the business for). She does not really listen to people, and when you are going in for med adjustments, you really need to listen.

I needed a concise report of my condition for my employer, and Dr. Wellman acted like she had never written up a treatment summary before. She said she'd do it and I dropped off the information she needed. I didn't hear from her (nor did my employer) for over a week. So I called her -- 3 times!!! FINALLY, she called me back (you always have to leave a message without talking to an actual human being) and said she was "at sea" and felt like this was an "invasion" of my privacy and that it wasn't my employer's business. Well, Lady, I signed the release forms, obviously it's okay with me! I encouraged her that she could do it. Called her two more times over the next three days, and finally she submitted it to the appropriate channels. Talk about UNPROFESSIONAL! I've been seeing her for a little over a year and now I'm looking for a new professional. She will not renew a prescription without an appointment every three months. She comes across as uncaring and did inform me that there would be no "therapy" involved in our relationship, that meds is what she does. Her office is a mess (she lost my file between my first and second appointments - no wonder she didn't feel like she could write a report!). No way I'd recommend her to a friend.

I've been seeing Dr. Wellman for about a year, simply because she's covered by my insurance and all I need is for her to write a prescription for me. Either way, I should've known this lady was a waste of time and money during my first visit the FIRST thing out of her mouth was telling me she's not a counselor so if I need those type of services, she can find me some names. Thanks a lot, way to form a bond with your patient. The other thing that really irritates me about this woman is that she has no secretary so, if you want to hear from her, she'll call you after 8, I've gotten calls between 9-10 at night. This is unacceptable and completely unprofessional to me. She needs to get her priorities straight and start caring about her patients. dont go to this doctor, she's a complete waste of time...oh, and on a side note...clean up your office, its a pig sty.

I saw Dr. Wellman for a few months and thought she was a terrible doctor. She did not pay attention to my symptoms that were getting worse on the medications she prescribed me. Every week she kept increasing my dosage and did not listen to my symptoms and side effects or pay attention to what I was telling her. I found her very unhelpful, impatient, uncaring, unsympathetic and overall just not someone who I would ever see again. She didn't give me the time I needed and would quickly cut short our appts. She didn't seem to care about my health. She seemed more interested in collecting her copay and then quickly sending me out the door with more meds. Just an awful experience at a time when I was really suffering. I found a much better doctor later who took me off everything Wellman gave me and truly helped me feel better. Unfortunately that good doctor is now retired.

I was amazed how quickly Dr. Wellman got to the bottom of a deep-seated problem in only one visit. She told me to come back when ever I needed to. When the problem came back, I visited again begging for meds. She would not give them to me. Days later, I realized, thank goodness she has the integrity not to let her patients second guess her. She was right -- I was ok. And had she given me meds when she knew I'd be ok just to keep me, that would have worked against my confidence that I could function, which I could. Just needed a little talk therapy. So thanks Dr. Wellman, and sorry I gave you a hard time. She is insightful, and I'd go to her again.

I've seen Dr. Wellman for several months. Haven't had a $$ problem with her. She is fine. Every appointment she asked a lot of relevant questions and wanted to know how I was doing and what was I up to. She listened to my history and we made a decision on my treatment based together. A psychiatrist is for medication and discussing physical and emotional side effects and benefits. A therapist will listen to you discuss your problems. I hope that some of the other reviewers will work with a therapist too. The best scenario is working with a psychiatrist and therapist who are open to consulting and keep each other in the loop. Maybe I 'm an old hand at this . . . been dealing with this stuff for 20 years.

Dr. Wellman stuck me with some meds, quick and out the door. She billed me twice for the same day, I had to dispute the charge. Now I'm getting calls about collections almost a year from having seen her. Spend you hard earned money elsewhere.

I've been seeing her for only 5 months and can't wait to find a new one. She cuts me off when I'm talking and makes me feel like I'm wasting her time; she seems eager to stick to the important stuff like what medications am I short on so she can write the prescription and still have time enough for me to write the check for my co-pay. She treats me like if I am some pathetic loser who, if it wasn't for the fact that she can bill a ridiculous amount of money for our time, is boring her with my blabbering. She is very inflexible and will threaten to finish therapy if I don't do something that is very hard for me to do and for which I went to her in the first place. Whenever I try to open up and show her that I'm willing to cooperate fully, she will comeback with some cynical or sarcastic remark that will throw me off so bad that I just clamp up again and desperately wait for the darn session to finally end. I don't like her at all but will have to do until I find something better.

I have been a patient of Dr. Wellman's for several years and can't relate to any of the negative reviews. She's definitely not a money-hungry practitioner (far from it) and is highly interested in her patients. Also, she's very conscientious about getting back to you, which is very difficult for doctors in this specialty. She monitors my medication and has done a very diligent job over the years, trying to assist me in finding the type of medication with minimal side effects. To me, she's a lovely therapist to go to, particularly for women in the Boomer generation (which I'm in).

I've been seeing her for 9 years. I agree with all the reviews. She truly only cares about making money. But I've never felt over or under medicated with her. If you are stable emotionally and just need maintenance medication prescriptions written then she is perfect for you. If you want someone warm and caring who wants to listen then go elsewhere.

I came to her to monitor the two meds that I had been on. She convinced me that I was bipolar and needed a stronger med. She put me on something that made me suicidal and deeply depressed. Getting her to call me back was a huge issue. She wouldn't call me back for days. When I got back on my regular meds, I went to make an appointment. Her only time to call back is late at night when I was putting my kids to bed. After several attempts to get a hold of her, she leaves me a message stating that "I find another Dr that has a secretary". Now I have very little meds left because she cannot call me back. I even left her a message to just leave me a message on my machine as to when she had an opening, Her call back message was that she couldn't leave me a message as to when to come in, and for me to call her back. Every time I called her back, it was her reg. voice mail. I tried paging her a few times as an emergency and she still did not call me back. I have been to many Dr.s in the past and have never been treated this way. It is a shame that I had to spend hours divulging my mental history, only to be treated in this fashion.

I have to completely disagree with the previous review. I have seen many many different doctors throughout my life, I have inherited Depression, and unfortunately will probably have to take anti-depressants my entire life. Dr. Wellman was the First doctor that did not try to give me more than just the antidepressants. All the other doctors tried to give me other medicines as well, when I was doing okay on only antidepressants. She has been absolutely wonderful for me, and I have been seeing her for almost 2 years now. Her only issue is that her billing company is giving her horrible problems. She admitted to me that she does not do any of her own billing, and that is why she doesn't talk to you about it, she doesn't know what you owe. Her billing company screws up left and right, but she is working with them to correct their mistakes for me. As long as I am not late for an appointment, she has never had any problems listening.

So, if you are frustrated with other psychiatrists, and actually show up to appointments on time and are willing to deal with her billing company and not her for billing, go see Dr. Wellman

When I first met Dr. Wellman, I thought she seemed nice and was a soft spoken person. She seems pretty organized and efficient with her practice, but I would NEVER NEVER recommend her to anyone. I was her patient for several months now so I think I can talk about her with certainty. 1) Dr. Wellman is very prescription-happy: What made me feel a bit uneasy about her is that she seems too quick to write prescriptions. On multiple occasions, she gave me new prescriptions to take based on too little information, I think. 2) Dr. Wellman cares only about money: She seems to care about how much you owe her more than anything else. It's definitely more of a "business for profit" for her than trying to help people. She's more into her own best interests than your mental health. For example, she would make you sign a lot of agreements that benefits her (such as how much she charges late fees, xerox fees, etc.), which is fine, but she wouldn't make a copy for you, so you don't have a copy of the agreements for reference. I've been to other similar services and they've always given a copy to me to keep, but not Dr. Wellman - that's why her practice stood out to me. Also, she explained her terms on the agreements to me verbally and I trusted her so signed, but in the end what's on the paper wasn't what she said to me. 3) She doesn't listen to you: She's definitely not the kind of doctor that would work with you. Whatever she says goes, no room or even CHANCE to negotiate at all. No point in telling her your situation b/c she'd say that she has no time for that b/c she has other people to talk to. I am so upset by her that she did me more harm than good, overall. In summary, I would not recommend her at all and she's the MOST uncaring health professional I know. If you choose to see her (good luck), don't forget to ask for copies of papers that she makes you sign so she wouldn't use it to screw you over (and she might charge you for the copies, also!)

PROS: She has a degree in psychiatry.
CONS: She doesn't care, doesn't listen, all she wants is $$ BEWARE.
