My son needed vision therapy and I took him to Hawthorne Vision Center between March and June of 2008. Before the first visit, I called them and made sure our vision insurance was accepted and there seemed to be no problem. But after the third and last visit in June, I was told that our insurance covered only routine eye exams, not therapeutic treatments my son was receiving, and that I had to pay for the last three visits out of my pocket. This kind of information shouldn't take nearly three months to get. They failed to inform me about critical information on the coverage and why should I have paid for their mistake? I also had them make two pairs of eyeglasses for my son because they offered the second pair at a discounted price ($80, thinking about it now, it's not that cheap at all) for that day only (what kind of business is that?). It is very frustrating that a lens pops out of the frame all the time (well, too frequently) no matter how hard I tighten the screw, and it's not even one year yet since the glasses were made. Even his teacher and the school office know about this. I, myself, have been wearing glasses for 15 years, but I never had glasses that pop out a lens. What kind of eye clinic doesn't know how to make usable eyeglasses anyway? This is due to their POOR, POOR, POOR workmanship. I wish I could return them and get new ones some place else.

I filed a complaint, but they refused to give any refund because I signed their office policy form. But can they say they provide a good, honest service when they fail to inform their client about insurance coverage in a timely manner and make them pay hundreds of dollars out of their pocket? I do not trust them any more to provide my family with quality care. I would not give them any star, but I don't have any choice. I'm glad they are not the only eye clinic in Portland. Anyway, I get better service at Kaiser. I recommend the eyeglass place on NW 21st (off Burnside).

Cons: terrible eyeglasses, office staff not helpful

I went here and by luck got seen by Dr. Love. He is very friendly and professional. I was very pleased w/ my eye exam. He even was considerate in thinking about cost and didn't push to do a contact lens fitting for a new brand of contacts b/c it would be expensive , so instead favored to use my current brand even though it was an older style. He even recognized me a few wks later when I came back to pick up my new glasses. The opticians there are also very helpful and friendly - don't push for the expensive glasses. I can only wish I could find all medical professionals that are as good as Dr. Love. I would definitely recommend him 100%!

I have a reocurrent eye disease. Due to its random and potentially damaging nature, I often need to be seen by Dr. Demaree on very last minute notice. I have always been fit it her schedule, often same day, without being made to feel like I am "a bother".

My wife changed to Dr. Demaree's office after seeing the quality of care. I will even have my child become a patient this summer, when she has her first eye exam.

I was recently seen by a eye disease specialist at Dr. Demaree request. The specialist said during my exam, "I often see a lot of scaring in eyes with this disease. Your eyes have very little damage. You and Dr. Demaree have been 'on top' your treatment. You have received good medical care."

As long as I live in the Portland area, she will be my family's eye doc.

Pros: Quality care, Flexible scheduling

Cons: Docs also work at other locations too. So, they are not at the same office everyday

My 11 year old with Asperger Syndrome happened to see Dr. Demaree for the first time for a recheck on a minor eye problem. His file explained that he was autistic and has sensory issues, he also gets nervous around doctors which many kids do. My mother accompanied him to this appt. since I could not. Dr. Demaree was short tempered and impatient with my son when he tried to explain how his eye was progressing. People with autism are typically very literal and my son tried to answer her questions since he is used to doctors talking with him directly. She snapped at him and told him that he was old enough to know when to stop talking when she wanted to talk with an adult. My mother was shocked at the tone of her voice and her approach. Dr. Demaree abruptly left the room in the middle of the consultation without explanation and after waiting, they had gotten their coats on figuring that she had ended the appointment prematurely. She came back in to continue but did not offer any excuse or apology. Both my mother and son felt very badly about the treatment that they received. If this is her idea of how to treat patients with special needs then we don't need her. We would NEVER consider using Hawthorne Vision again.
