When I was looking for a primary-care physician for myself and my elderly mother in early 2013, I visited Dr. Chernack's practice in Hyde Park. A local neurologist had referred me to him, and I was bringing our medical records to his office. However, I ended up leaving the office with the records because I was so turned off by what I saw. In addition to the office's rinky-dink appearance, I found his staff extremely unprofessional, causing me to question his judgment. The receptionist asked me personal questions while I was standing at the desk and other patients were within earshot and yelled at me when I reached over the desk to pick up a pen to make a notation. I left and ended up using Dr. Westmoreland and Premier Medical Group instead.

When my mother was admitted to the emergency room at Vassar Brothers Medical Center after aspirating on vomit last Dec. 17, I was dismayed when Dr. Chernack, not Dr. Westmoreland, came to the emergency room to treat her. After very bad experiences with Mid-Hudson Medical Group's system of rotating hospitalists, I had chosen Dr. Westmoreland in part because of his assertion that he follows his patients to the hospital. I was never told he shared that duty with Dr. Chernack.

While I was at my mother's bedside in the ER, he started to interrogate me as to why the trip to the ER had taken so long, which I found very off-putting and peculiar. I had called 911 as soon as my mother had the episode, and the first responders stabilized her and brought her to the ER. I wasn't aware of any delay (other than the fact that I had to stop to clear ice from my windshield, but my mother was riding in the ambulance, not with me), and his intimation that some impropriety might be involved really upset me.

It was clear to me that my mother's condition was very serious, and I asked Dr. Chernack not to say anything about that in front of her. A short time later, while standing right next to my mother, he said, "She's a very sick young lady. She may not make it home." This remark was not only demeaning (it's inappropriate to call an extremely ill 90-year-old a "young lady") but expressly ignored the request I had made just a few minutes earlier. It demonstrated an appalling lack of respect for both the patient and the caregiver.

In addition, Dr. Chernack gave my mother a breast exam, an indignity that was completely superfluous as she had just had a mammogram and a biopsy (as I could have told him if he had asked me before proceeding) and it was clear her breasts were not the problem. More than seven months later, I am sickened by his behavior that night and was more than dismayed to see that your practice had chosen him to succeed Dr. Westmoreland.

Dr. Chernack has been our family physician for nearly 20 years and I dread the day he decides to retire. My wife and I literally trust him with our lives. He is caring and compassionate and if he recommends a test or procedure we know it needs to be done. He has always gone above and beyond for us. He is no nonsense when it comes to his patients and I've seen him take hospital staff to task when they are less than attentive. We've never had a problem getting an appointment, nor getting calls back from him or the office staff. He takes ample time examining us and never rushes or makes us feel like he needs to get on to the next patient. When my father-in-law (also a patient of his) was too ill to get to the office, Dr. Chernack made a housecall - not once but twice! What doctor makes housecalls today???? He could have easily told us to take him to the ER (which would have been a waste of time and money) but he felt it prudent to see him at home first. That should tell you all you need to know about Dr. Chernack.

This review is essentially to rebut the negative comments about Dr. Chernack. He's been my PCP for 20 years and he and Dr. Payne have been seeing my wife and children for the past 5. They have always been helpful, even on weekends and after hours where Dr. Chernack made a special trip into his office to see my son when he came down with chicken pox and once with the flu.

Dr. Chernack is one of the most disrespectful doctors I have had the misfortune of meeting. His entire office staff is rude and incompetent. Twice they have called me to tell me to pick up prescriptions and when I went to pick them up they had still not written them and made me up back later to get them. He has falsely accused me of attempting to obtain unnecessary medications. He never returns calls nor does his staff. They lost my file and never have any idea what is going on. I waited 45 min. Beyond my scheduled appointment time in the empty waiting room only to wait 30 more min. In the exam room. His medical advice is shotty at best. Rude, disrespectful and one of the worst doctors ever! He should be stripped of his license and forbidden to practice!

I see Dr. Barbra Payne at this practice, she is always ready to listen and is always sensitive to my children sitting in the room. She offers several options to meet our needs and goes personally to the hospital when my child was hospitalized at Vassar for a week. The other pediatrician at her office is just as great. I am extremely satisfied with her skills and compassion.

I have had one problem with Dr. Chernack. I had called the office on a friday to receive a prescription refill order. Come Saturday when I went to pick up my prescription, there had been no order sent in. I called the office and got an answering agency who took some information and then hung up on me. I then called back to ask a question or two and got a different person, who took the same information and then answered my question.
THE PROBLEM
About an hour later I receive a phone call from Dr Chernack. Once he finds out that I called in regards to a prescription refill he remarks, "You call me on a WEEKEND for a prescription refill?"
I could tell he was upset and tried explaining the situation but he did not want to hear it. He cut me off and verified the prescription and told me that he would call it in.
Until this incident I had never had any problems with Dr. Chernack. If you are a person who never needs any medical support on the weekends then I highly suggest Dr. Chernack. But if you ever need something on a weekend, you will probably receive an attitude.
After all, the Hippocratic Oath means nothing on the weekends.
(This is my reasoning for the 2 star review on the "Does the physician listen to you and answer your questions)

Barbara Payne is an awsome pediatrician. My children are very comfortable with her. She shows great compassion and respect to them. SHe has a partner who is also very good. Her husband, Dr. CHernack covers her on occasion.
