I began at Downtown GYN 15 yrs ago; don't remember how I first came there. At my first visit Audrey Buxbaum diagnosed a problem for which I had been seeking help for about 4-5 years - numerous docs. Surgery was required. Much careful consultation prior. Great outcome. Been seeing her since. Audrey has been so thorough with me - even when hurried. She asks questions, she remembers personal things - even when I haven't been there for 5 years! She discusses anything and everything, and I can go back and talk to her again if I need clarification or have new questions. I would be very unhappy if I couldn't see Audrey as my GYN.

I am 52 years old and have been seeing a OB/GYN since i was 17 years -- I said all that to say that I believe I should have a little experience in quality care. I have been seeing male OB/GYN doctors for most of my adult life and always felt intimidated and embarrassed to discuss my needs -- I started going to Downtown Women about year ago and found Dr. Shih to be a pleasant and attentive doctor, she is not my mother or my husband so I don't expect her to spend to whole day listening to me whine but she attends to my Gynecological concerns. I would recommend her to other women. Recently, I had a referral for a sonogram and on the day of the appt. I forgot the referral at home and there was a $75 charge to cancel -- I called Downtown Women and asked the nurse to fax a referral to the place where i was having the sonogram and when i got there the referral was there. There is never a perfect situation but i have to give credit where credit is due.

Going to this clinic for my prenatal was by far the biggest mistake I've ever made in my life. Not only does it take forever to get an appointment, you have to wait for at least half an hour to be seen and deal with the crappy attitude of the front desk staff, some of whose boyfriends visit during office hours. The doctors are brisk, abrupt and not particularly good at what they do. You are in and out and they get paid-- that's what matters. They are like machines, robots; and one of the nurses can be unspeakably rude, especially if your bloodwork is holding her up at the end of the day. If you're looking for personal, individualized, quality treatment DO NOT GO here.

My insurance nightmare is another reason why I don't recommend this clinic. Initially I was told they do not accept my insurance; I left the clinic planning to find an in-network provider. The same day, they called me back and told me they would love to have me as a patient. A woman from the billing department sat down with me and explained that since I had an excellent plan, I would only have to pay a deductible of $100; my provider (United Health Care) would cover 80% of the bill and the clinic would write off the rest. I made sure that she understood that I could not pay out of pocket for expenses and she kept assuring me that there would be no need to. Several months
into pregnancy, I was hit by lab bills totaling hundreds of dollars in addition to costs my insurance didn't cover; the woman did not explain that there would be a discrepancy between the amount allowed by my provider and the amount of the bill, and that the 80% referred to the former rather than the latter. She did not explain that lab costs were not included. In addition, I had to be transferred to a high-risk specialist because of a positive fetal fibronectin test in my seventh month. Hence a different billing code was used than what was expected. Botttom line, it is three months after my delivery and I received a bill from their office for $4,000 which they claim I am responsible for. I will have to work with a medical billing advocate to fight this, if necessary. The staff in the billing department have avoided my calls and the woman who lured me into the clinic looked ashamed when I went to see her in person, but the semi-threatening letters still arrive in my mail.

In one word: Avoid like the plague. Do not be seduced, like I was, by the name or the Soho location. These people (doctors, nurses and billing department staff) do not care about you. Dealing with them has detracted from the joy of having twins and added unnecessary layers of stress to my life.

Cons: too many to name

I was a patient of Dr. Buzbaum's for a couple years. DW was recommended to me as a place where women's health is a priority, and the doctors are all female. Dr. Buxbaum attended my alma matter, which was a plus--or so I thought. Each time I met with Dr. Buxbaum--for routine check-ups--she was rushed, distracted, and generally just made me feel like she was doing me a favor by even seeing me. She didn't seem particularly interested in me or my health. Gynocological exams were physically rough, without any explanations. I kept thinking it must be 1955. But my biggest complaint was the way Dr. Buxbaum handled my request to discuss birth control options. When I told her I had had bad experiences on the pill (skin problems, weight gain, mood swings) and would like to try a diaphram, which I had had good experiences with in the past, she was dismissive and condescending, and kept trying to push upon me the sample birth control pills she had on hand. I had to stand my ground just so that she would fit me for a diaphram. To make a long story short, she fitted me incorrectly (my pharmacist said she could tell just by looking at me--in a winter coat, no less--that the size diaphram Dr. Buxbaum perscribed was wrong), which ended up leaving me on vacation with my husband with an ill-fitting diaphram, and myself in tears. Dr. Buxbaum, whatever her qualifications, is missing the most important qualifications: SHE DOES NOT LISTEN, AND SHE DOES NOT SEEM TO CARE.

I did not use this doctor in particular at the practice. The practice is the worst I've ever experienced. The staff is incredibly rude and unhelpful. Information I was provided over the phone was always either inaccurate or incomplete. When I asked questions of my doctor I was told that the information was "in my handout." When I looked at the handout the information I sought was not there. They overbook so it is incredibly difficult to get appointments and the appointment you have never starts on time. I would not recommend Downtown Women OBGYN to anyone.

Pros: I cannot think of any

Cons: Hard to get an appointment, appointments are never on time

.

The staff people here are very unhelpful. I needed some tests, and the nurse on the phone, Susan, told me that they were urine tests, so I could just come in. I thought that wasn't right but she assured me. So I left work early and went there; I waited for an hour. They finailly came out (after I'd heard them discuss me about 3 times) to tell me I needed to make an appointment, because 3 of the tests I needed to see my actual doctor for. No one apologized for the mistake or making me wait an hour.
Then today I called to make the appointment, although I actually want to switch doctors but want to get all this over with, and after 12 minutes on hold, they sent me to voicemail.
The doctor is fine, though she gave me a referral to a place that didn't take my insurance, but their staff and organization is horrible. If you go once a year it's fine but if you are pregnant, or trying to get pregnant you will just stress yourself out more.

I called on a weekend because I had a yeast infection and needed a prescription for diflucan (I'm allergic to topical meds) before I went away for a week. The nurse, Stephanie, said, "We don't prescribe yeast infection medications on weekends." I explained that: (1)I wouldn't be able to visit the office on Monday, as I was about to go away on business for a week (2) that I'm a frequent sufferer of yeast infections, as my chart would report, and thus know how to recognize them (3) that I'm allergic to topical meds, as reported in my chart. She continued to refuse. In the end, my infection became much worse, and much harder to treat, before I could receive a prescription from my GP. I left the practice.

I have been going her on and off for over thirteen years depending on whether the insurance I currently had was accepted by their office

I started with Dr. Aron who left and then have been seeing Dr Buxbaum whom I absolutely adore. She is soo sweet and always answers my questions without me feeling like I am being rushed.

I am too hot on the staff as they always seem to be so brusque when I deal with them and this has been a consistent gripe of mine throughout the years. But dealing with them is a small price to pay for finding a gyn that I am comfortable with.

I had been going to Downtown Women's OBGYN for over 10 years.
I love the trip downtown but that was about it. I had a nurse practitioner who was a great lady after she left so did I. I tried different doctors in the practice but that place is like a factory line they get you in and out. After 10 years I never felt like there was one doctor I could trust. It's tough to find a good doctor but I now go to a male doctor and feel it was a world of difference.

I've been a patient of DW for 6 years. I finally found a OB in New York that I could connect to. Dr. LaJoie delivered my 2 children and I am forever thankful to her for that. I have had great experiences with Dr. Buxbaum, Dr. Goodstein and N.P. Nancy Kraus. I feel so lucky to have them as my physicians. I also live uptown and felt the trip downtown was well worth it!

I recently visited this clinic after a friend had recommended it. It turned out to be a billing nightmare. The receptionist confirmed via phone and in person that my insurance was accepted, and upon arrival they took copies of my card, I filled out the paperwork and all was in order - or so I thought. A few weeks after treating me, they called me to say that there was a mistake and they don't in fact take my insurance and that I'd be responsible for the entire bill. I went in there, and the receptionist assured me that it was her mistake, and that I would not be held responsible. Then a few months later I get a call saying I owed a considerable amount of money. I explained the situation to the person, and she said no one there had authority to tell me that I wasn't responsible for payment. She said she'd call back with the final total and left me a voice message a few days later. Without even sending me a paper statement in the mail, she immediately sent me to Collections! I have never in my life had an outstanding payment nor ever been sent to Collections! These people were unprofessional and unethical in their treatment towards me. I've never had such an unpleasant experience at a doctor's office.

I had been a patient here for almost 4 years under the care of the nurse practitioner for regular yearly Paps. After 2 years of a clean bill of health, year 3 I go in for my regular Pap. The NP calls me two weeks later with the results, telling me I had an irregular Pap and that it came back that I had HPV and needed to come in for a colposcopy. Ofcourse no one wants to hear this news, so I freak out and made an appointment right away. 2 hours after hanging up the phone, the NP calls me back telling me that there was a mistake, that the lab test was lost, and that there in fact was no HPV because there was no test to ever even have results. Therefore, I had to come back in to get re-pap'd. When I go back in and have a second Pap, she proceeds to tell me that in fact the mix-up occured with the lab saying that there were "not-enough cells to be tested" ie the NP didn't conduct the test correctly. Finally the results came back compeletely fine and again, a clean bill of health. Year 4 rolls around, I go for my Pap once again. 2 weeks later, the NP calls me up and says I have HPV and that I need to go in for a colposcopy immediately. By this time, I'm pissed off and don't believe a word she's saying. Thank GOD I had enough sense to get a second opinon and change doctors because Dr. #2 who is affiliated with Columbia Pap'd me and I had a clean bill of health. I feel like DW was just trying to tell me I had stuff wrong with me just to bill a procedure that was never needed in the first place to the insurance company! Awful, cold-hearted IDIOTS there!!!! AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE!

I have been with DW for almost 3 years, 2 miscarriages and 1 stillbirth. I just think it is worth pointing out that any woman who is nervous about her pregnancy should really consider alternatives to DW. I was 22 weeks pregnant, I went to see DW because I was having some odd sensations, cramping and pain. I saw Dr. Tam (another doctor at DW whom I had never met before) I tried to explain what i was feeling. She asked me if i had diarrohea, which i did have a few days prior to my visit and i tried to explain to her that the pain continued after the diarrohea stopped but she dismissed my concerns saying I had food poisoning. she did monitor the baby's heartbeat, told me everything was ok and sent me on my way. Well it wasn't diarrohea, my cervix had started to dilate. I lost my baby daughter 2 weeks after my visit with Dr. Tam. The third unsuccessful pregnancy at DW. I am completely devastated and don't know how i can even begin to recover. The doctor's at NYU were wonderful, they weren't dismissive or patronising.
I think the doctors at DW, don't treat you as an individual, there is no relationship building and therefore no trust exists. I feel so stupid for having stcuk it out with them, when all the indications to find somewhere else were staring me in the face. I paid the ultimate price for my stupidity and wouldn't want anyone else to go through the same pain i am going through.
ANYONE WHO IS PREGNANT SHOULD NOT BE GOING TO THIS PLACE.
the technicians - especially the blond lady who takes blood are inexcusably rude and the fact the Dr La Joie et al do nothing in order to have these technicians show some level of care for patients is a glaring indication of the type of practice that this is.

I'm surprised to see these bacd reviews here. I whave been looking for a good obgyn ever since I moved to the city 6 years ago and finally I found a place that I like. I like that fact that it's a bussling place full of woman. Dr's and nurse practicioners alike were wonderful. Beautiful offices. Efficiant. I loved it. On hthe other hand, avoid Midtown Gynocology like the plague!!

I like that fact that it's a bussling place full of woman. Dr's and nurse practicioners alike were wonderful. Beautiful offices. Efficiant. I loved it. On hthe other hand, avoid Midtown Gynocology like the plague!!

Overall, my general examinations --annuals, consultations with the nurse practitioners were fine, Shelly Kolton also was very kind to me and professional when I needed a sonogram. However, when I became ill, this place was no good at all! I had a nurse go out sick for a few days, and drop my case, thereby delaying my surgery by weeks, additionally, the office did not submit my insurance properly. I was treated by the administrative staff very poorly. The nurses were unhelpful and rude after my surgery and it was hard to see or speak with a dr. While Dr. Buxbaum was lovely when I saw her in the ER, I generally found the drs there to be rushed and not particularly knowledgeable or helpful or proactive. I am sorry to say all of this but I would NOT recommend this practice to anyone, they told me themselves they see over 200 women a day!!!

I was a patient there for 2 years. I had countless issues with the birth control they prescribed (less what was right for me and more what their medical rep was hawking most recently) and was misdiagnosed with an infection. Hard to get a last minute appointment, they never call you back and the doctors work too quickly to treat you correctly. An absolutely awful experience.

Dr. Shih was the best doctor I have ever had! She did not seem rushed, which is very rare. She asked if I had any questions more than once. She came into the room with knowledge of my prior medical history. The front staff can be busy, but they are always courteous and willing to help. One problem: I once saw another doctor once who was very "preachy" which is not what you want when you go to a doctor. I felt like a child being scolded.

I gave birth w one of the doctors; used service as gyno and decided to stay for obst. care when got pregnant as was too busy to get recommendation. Towards the end of the pregnancy I realized that I did not trust these doctors - since my visits were rushed, questions unanswered, everytime i saw a doctor, although they followed my whole pregnancy, felt as seeing them for the first time, they did not remember my name, or concerns, but was stupid enough and did not switch.

i gave birth thank god to healthy baby, however an unacceptable mistake was made by one of the doctors in the hospital which caused me two weeks of extra pain on top of delivery pain, two additional visits as stitiches redone; when i should had enjoyed time w the baby; may be this practice used to be nice; but with too many patients - these practice does not really care about you; dr's run around trying to cover max number of patients. I had never been treated so badly, and never been in tears in doctors office. Nurses and assistant are rude; they are not professional; and treat patients as they are doing them a favor by talking to them. i was in such pain and tears by my last visits there, as was waiting on them in horrible pain due to doctors mistake and crying baby on my hands. There is no such thing as treating patients w/respect. Please do not even consider for any serious treatment.I am terrified that I risked my baby's health and my family due to such bad choice. Noone appologized.

I have been going to this practice for over thirty years. They have seen me through a husbands death, a hysterectomy, a remarriage the birth of my third son, a divorce and everything in between. I never got anything but the BEST care. I probably have the largest file there. Dr. Kolton's daughter and my last son were born the same time. I see Audrey Bauxbaum and Dr. kolton as I have entired (although I do not wish to admit) my senior years...YUCK! I started with Dr. Storch many moons ago who died of ovarian Ca. I have referred MANY patients there who I felt needed excellant medical care. yes, the phones can drive you crazy but in the realm of life the care is more important. Both Dr. Bauxbaum and Dr. Kolton are professional, warm and caring and the BEST. Although they now accept my insurance I went for many years paying out of pocket. If you have a problem with a specific doctor tell them before you write remarks that can keep others from the attention of a good doctor. I feel blessed to have this practice for so many years.

I am shocked that there are any bad reviews of this medical practice. I started with Dr. Buxbaum back in 1998 when pregnant with my first child and she and all of her colleagues and staff have been wonderful. The staff is very professional and they keep their appointments! You will even get phone calls if the doctor is called away on an emergency or stuck in delivery to reschedule. Have I ever been placed on hold while making an appointment? Sure, but the staff was always professional. They have delivered both of my children and handled any other health condition with the appropriate sensitivity and patience. I recommend this practice without reservation.

This is a great place to go to for taking care of your women's health needs. When I was a new patient they gave me a choice of meeting with the different doctors in the practice to find one who was right for me. My doctor also treats me for other medical stuff that comes up, which has saved me from having to take a trip to a primary care doctor. i've recommended to numerous friends.

I've read all the reviews below, and I can see that people might view DW that way; I just wanted to say that I've been a patient there for a few years and though I've never been treated exactly warmly, and yes, the phone system is a mess, that the doctors I've dealt with have been kind when the situation calls for it, and extrememly efficient and smart. I have a feeling they just know what they're doing--the nurses/lab technicians are extrememly rude, true--but again, they do what they need to do and get you out of there. I actually prefer to get those visits over with, so if you want good doctors who will tell you straight, get your prescriptions in quickly, and be on time to your appts., it's a good place to go.

PROS: straightforward and smart
CONS: phone system, approachability

Avoid this place like the plague if you are pregnant. Downtown Women is no better than a factory farm. I had severe preeclampsia with my first pregnancy which was left undiagnosed and untreated. My son was stillborn at 7 months. I believe my son's stillbirth could have been avoided if I'd had more hands on care. Appointments were always rushed. Questions were never answered fully. Different doctors for each appointment who didn't know who you were. No continuity in care and therefore, unable to build any kind rapport with the people who were supposed to deliver my child. Support staff were rude with no training. Telephone system is an absolute shambles (I had been left on hold for up to an hour once). I'm sure this place was great in its heyday but how can the Doctor's perform at their best when they have taken on too many patients? They are a greedy practice who care more about how many patients they can fit through their doors and the amount of dollars they can line their pockets with. Unfortunately, being my first pregnancy, I thought this kind of treatment was normal in NYC. How wrong I was. I moved to another Doctor in midtown and the care could not have been more different. I went on to have 3 healthy children. I would never recommend any pregnant woman to go to Downtown Women. Never, in a million years.

I was recommended to this place. I made an appointment with Dr. Lajoie. It was horrible. She was rude and unprofessional. I don't feel like she answered my questions and was annoyed that I actually had questions about my health. She told me she would run some tests and get back to me. She calls me up two and half weeks later at 8:30pm and demanded that I give her the phone number to my pharmacist. I told her that I didn't know the number by heart and did she mind if I called her back in a few minutes with it. She became very rude and said she was leaving for the day and I would have to wait two days to get in touch with her so I better find a phone book and get it now.

PROS: great location
CONS: BAD Doctors

I will never go to this office again. I was made to feel uncomfortable from the moment I arrived. The doctor who attended to me, Dr. Suzanne Lajoie, was very impersonal and mean. During the exam I felt very uncomfortable; I felt like crying. She was rough with the exam also. She didn't give me any options about my birth control; she just prescribed me any old pill and sent me on my way. The pill she prescribed to me made me depressed, borderline suicidal, and miserable. I came off it, only to be attacked by migraines because of the decrease in estrogen. Women like me with a history of bad circulation/migraines shouldn't take the pill, so I found out, but Dr. Lajoie didnt take the time to find that out. The pill she prescribed me could have been very harmful to me if I had stayed on it.

I will never step foot in this office again, and I recommend that no one else does, either. Especially anyone with special health concerns or sexual issues. Or any women between the ages 18-35.

PROS: None
CONS: Where do I start?

The doctors here are very good. I've tried them out a few times all ready and they are always well prepared and can answer all of my questions. They also keep their appointments on time, so I didn't have to wait long in the waiting room. I'd definitely recommend.

Downtown Women is just what it says it is - all female. The office is immaculate in a gorgeous Soho loft area, and the nurses and doctors are patient, kind, and thorough. Everyone there works to make your experience as positive as possible and to make sure that as a patient you understand everything that is going on at all times. Calls to the doctors are returned quickly and everyone is patient in explaining and re-explaining all your questions. A comfortable and informative experience all around.

PROS: All female, great space, professional staff

I've been a patient of theirs for a few years now and I'm happy with their services. The doctors and nurses that I've dealt with have been knowledgeable and friendly. They accept several insurance plans (I've had Guardian and Oxford over the last two years).

Their phone system is a nightmare, with several recorded menus eventually dumping you into a voice mail box. It's difficult to get someone on the phone unless you have an appointment the day you're calling. But hang on and deal with this one annoyance because the women that work there are great.

PROS: Friendly, helpful staff
CONS: Getting a live person on the phone isn't easy.
