Don't even bother contacting them unless you fit a very narrow profile of patient. I'm in perfect health, no complications at all, fully insured, but I was turned away because of my work schedule. I travel out of state for my job, so I would have had to have one of my prenantal exams at another facility, and I would have had to take some of the classes at another facility, most of which I already had lined up, but still I was told "you're not a good fit for our facility." Apparently their classes are so unique, so rarefied, that no other facility could possibly be up to their standards.

So I'm left with the options of a facility without a single CNM on staff, or a hospital birth at Christmas time (the rates of C-sections go up during the holidays). Home birth is out of the question. It's too risky and if anything goes wrong I don't live close to a hospital. Basically I'm just screwed, simply because they can't be bothered to work with a working mother. They wouldn't even see me for a preliminary appointment. I found out I'm pregnant just as we started the process of moving to Austin from North Carolina, and I was so comforted to see there was a well regarded, well staffed facility in the city. Now I'm rethinking our move to Austin simply because I don't know where I can have this baby.

To sum up, working mothers beware, they have no sympathy for the fact that some of us still have to earn a living while pregnant.

Austin Area Birthing Center is a fabulous alternative for a low risk pregnancy. After learning about all the interventions and high c-section rates on normal births, we decided to look into alternatives. I have experienced both my pregnancies as well as well-women care at the south location. All of the midwives are caring and very knowledgable. We completely trust them with my health and the birth of our children. My first labor was 8 hours and they allowed my husband and I to really complete the birth together, only monitoring and encouraging, but not interfering. My second labor, happened to be only 40 minutes. We didn't end up making it to our car, let alone the birthing center, so we had an unplanned, unassisted home birth! Oops! They sent a midwife as soon a it was clear I wasn't going to be making it anywhere. Meg was here within 15 minutes of the birth and stayed and monitored us just as they would have at the birthing center. She was fantastic! They are opening a home birth branch which will be well received! The price is extraordinary and includes birthing, breastfeeding, sibling prep, and baby massage classes, yoga, at home visit from a lactation consultant and beautiful facilities. The front staff and nursing staff is prompt, considerate and on time. They are just as excited as you are! If you are even considering them, go for a free tour and visit and you will be converted.

Our experience at AABC was phenomenal! We began our pregnancy at an OB/GYN and were not receiving the quality of care we felt we deserved. We wanted a natural birth experience, so upon many recommendations decided to go with the AABC. The second we walked into AABC we felt at home. The staff is so friendly and they did everything they could to make sure that we received the best care possible. We never felt rushed during our prenatal appointments - each midwife took as much time as we needed and made sure all of our questions were answered and that we were always at ease. The classes offered are also top notch and super informative: Centering, breast feeding, cloth diapering, prenatal yoga. Our Centering class gave us the opportunity to build a community among other expecting couples and prepared us for what to expect during pregnancy, birth, and caring for our baby.
Our birth experience was better than we could have hoped for. Michelle and Cat took such good care of us - always anticipating our needs and making us feel comfortable and totally at ease. Our family and friends were incredibly impressed with the facility as well.
AABC also offers excellent postnatal care. All of the support they offer (home visit, postnatal checkups for baby and mom) helped us to transition into this new phase in our life.
We wholeheartedly recommend AABC for anyone who wants a birth experience surrounded by staff who support and care for you.
