Dr. Harlan is someone I regard with the upmost respect, of the highest moral integrity.. He has been both mentor, counselor to me for a span of many years, seeing our family through much turmoil. When the days were darkest, he provided hope and guidance through the storms and trials of our lives..Butte County has been blessed with this man and I might add his family, and his staff... It is with heartfelt gratitute that I even consider writing this.

Update: As of July 7, 2012, Tim Harlan has NO LICENSE to practice as a counselor in California. He relinquished his license willingly rather than publicly admit his wrongdoing. The official Accusation against him is deemed TRUE. You can read it.

I went to counseling from Harlan for over a year. He also counseled my wife individually and us as a couple. He and my ex-wife had an affair that lasted over a year. My ex-wife and I sued him and settled out of court. Harlan lost his case in the official Accusation by the Attorney General's offices of the state of CA and his been forced, after five years if denial, to give up his license. He is the single most UN-ethical person I have ever met.

Go to http://www.bbs.ca.gov/... to view and read the accusation against him. This can also be found on the website for the CA Board of Behavioral Sciences. Additionally, I still have his love letters to my ex-wife and even a voice recording of Harlan admitting the sexual and inappropriate nature of that relationship.

Sorry if he fooled you, he fooled me, too.

I agree with the comments of the other reviewer, Donise B. My husband and I have both gone to therapists in several different areas, individually, over the years. Dr. Harlan is the only therapist we have gone to as a couple. We both find the negative review of Dr. Harlan highly offensive. I do not know much about suing people. I have never had the thought of ever needing to do that, in regard to any of my doctors. Neither has my husband. I suppose there are lemons in every field of profession, but I honestly do not sense that Dr. Harlan is anything like what the other reviewer seemed to imply. I have heard of people who sue doctors for no good reason; only to try and get money. If it is true that someone tried to sue Dr. Harlan, my husband and I both agree that they were only trying to cause him grief and get money for it. We are grateful to Dr. Harlan for everything he has done for us. He recommended a center for my husband to go to that really helped him; and Dr. Harlan has done a tremendous job at following up to make sure my husband gets the most out of what he learned at the center; and we both get the most benefit as a couple. If you would like to read something else someone else said about Dr. Harlan, it is on the Citysearch website. It is a great story.

Dr. Harlan is the only therapist (I've seen several) who made me feel that therapy was having a positive and significant impact on my life. He has a very grounded understanding of how to establish a healthy client / therapist relationship; and, he is genuinely interested in helping people who reach out to him. Terrific therapist!

I don't want anyone to decide against going to Butte Counseling Clinic, based on the Feb 2008 review, by the everso-upstanding 'Anonymous'. The person who posted that review is trying to create what is called 'reasonable doubt' in the mind of anyone who may be considering Butte Counseling Clinic, aka Dr. Timothy Harlan, PhD, as a therapist. Over the last 30 years, I've seen therapists from the San Francisco Bay Area to Santa Barbara, CA. Dr. Tim Harlan is the only one who took an interest in me, as a human being, first; and, as a client, second. I don't think the others were bad therapists. I think they lacked the gift Dr. Harlan has. It's a gift that tempered his motivation and passion to become a therapist, in the first place. I guess it's like discriminating between the people who become teachers. Some have a gift for teaching; others want summers and holidays off. I was referred to Dr. Harlan during a horrible time in my life. I had no one in the world I could trust. More importantly, I cared little whether I lived, or died. Actually, at the time, I preferred the latter. I had seen a therapist years before, while in a similar condition. Unlike that doctor, Dr. Harlan went out of his way to let me know that there was at least one person on the planet, who cared if I lived, or died....because, unlike the others, he knew that's what I really needed. Sometimes, something that simple, can be the difference between life and death. That's why I knew I had to write this story when I read the 1 other review; the bogus one. So, I'm happy to say, I'm still here. Who knows? If 'Anonymous' had posted a review about Dr. Harlan back then, I might be dead. I wonder if 'Anonymous' knows, or even cares, that he/she is negatively impacting countless people who he/she doesn't even know....Dr. Harlan has been a constant and encouraging support during more than 1 phase of my personal growth. He has always been completely open to all my questions and comments; even when I've been less than pleasant (to put it mildly.) Dr. Harlan did some psychological and personality testing on me, which the past doctors never even mentioned. The results were very beneficial to my treatment. If you are going to see Dr. Harlan, this is my advice to you, based on my experience with him: He is EXTREMELY thorough. However, you will often be unaware of this because he doesn't use "psycho-babble" which is the lingo many expect to hear, therefore confirming they are most definitely "in therapy." Also, if, after a session with Dr. H., you find yourself scratching your head, asking, "What was that all about, exactly?" --remember this...There's a method to his madness. When you're talking, he's doing more than just listening to you. If he's talking, he's doing more than just observing your listening. Just when you think a statement you made about yourself, in a session, 2 months ago, has gone unaddressed, or has been overlooked (maybe he didn't hear me say that), he'll tie it into the current session, in a way that makes more sense to you, than you believed it ever could. He's been doing this every year, for the past 32 years. He's honest, gentle (when needed), challenging (when needed), kind, discreet....In one word, Dr. Timothy Harlan is......real. As a therapist, Dr. Harlan has been a tremendous asset to troubled teenagers who have been referred to him by professionals, in Butte County, and other areas. If you have puzzle pieces missing, like I did, he'll help you find them. If you don't know how the pieces fit together, within the puzzle, like I did, he'll help you to do that, too. Oh! One more thing, I almost forgot....He's got the greatest coffee!! My best wishes to you...
