28 years ago my parents found out that I had a condition called strabismus. Several doctors told them that I would need several surgeries to correct the problem. My father contacted Dr. Caputo who explained that I would need one surgery and possibly another 25 years down the road. At that time my father had changed jobs and did not have insurance. He told Dr. Caputo who said, it was more important that his little girl see than any amount of money. Moved to tears my father knew this man cared. The surgery went well and I was fine for a long time.
About 27 years later I began to have some discomfort. Not thinking anything about the strabismus I went to my general eye dr. My eye doctor informed me that it was strabismus and that the specialist in the field was Dr. Caputo.
When I met with Dr. Caputo he was the most caring, soft-spoken doctor I had ever met... and I have met many. He examined me and told me that the previous surgery had been done well and when I told him that he had performed it, he was so moved. I certainly did not expect this man to remember me since I was about a year old when I met him but he apologized more than once for not remembering me!
He went out of his way before, during, and after the surgery to make sure that I was comfortable.
I believe the man who left the review about his wife's surgery is judging Dr. Caputo by his office staff. Unfortunately, I do know the woman he was referring to and she isn't the best person to deal with. However, she is by no means an indication of the quality of care that you will receive when you see Dr. Caputo. I am not writing this review to help him win patients as he is very accomplished and there is a 6 month to see him so his service and reputation speak for themselves.
I also understand why he might not accept insurance anymore. Our country is in a state of confusion in regards to the whole system and everyone is suffering; including doctors who also have to deal with sue-happy patients. Perhaps it's not the best resolution not to accept insurance but knowing Dr. Caputo personallly I can say that he would not decline a person in need of treatment because of money; especially a child.
God Bless this doctor for saving the sight of little babies with such a caring and loving heart.

Excellent doctor. Saved our son's eyesight. Cant praise much. We have been to quite a few pediatric opthamologist but Dr Caputo stands apart as best among all of them.

My wife, was scheduled to have eye surgery performed by Dr. Caputo , August 17, 2010 at Clara Maas Hospital in Belleville, NJ.

She has had a congenital eye problem since birth which has significantly deteriorated over the last few years. As a result of the strabismus, her left eye has started to turn out further and the condition has become quite apparent. Our daughter was scheduled to be married in September 2010 and I convinced my wife to have the surgery. I could not have been happier that she was having the surgery and that her appearance would be significantly improved prior to the wedding.

After visiting his office and being examined, surgery was scheduled for August 17, 2010. My wife was advised that Dr. Caputo does not accept insurance prior to treatment and that $6,500.00 had to be paid prior to the surgery at his office. Additionally, my wife had to obtain medical clearance prior to the surgery. The medical examination, blood work and EKG were performed the week before and Betty in Dr. Capto's office advised my wife that she was leaving early on Friday, August 13, 2010 and that if the clearing Dr.did not fax the test results before Betty left the office early that Friday, she would cancel the surgery.

If you review his paperwork and forms in Dr. Caputo's office, no where does it state that the payment must be made by cash, certified check or credit card. NO WHERE IN HIS WAITING ROOM OR OFFICE IS THERE A NOTICE STATING THAT PAYMENT MUST BE IN CASH AND THAT INSURANCE WOULD NOT BE ACCEPTED! I had my stock broker transfer money the day before the surgery to my bank account to pay for my wife's surgery. I had to deliver payment in full to Dr. Caputo the day before surgery, even though as a school teacher she has great medical insurance.

At 2 pm the day before the surgery, I was advised that Betty from Dr. Capto's office had called and that the payment had to be cash or credit card. I spoke to Betty and she agreed to wait until 4:10 PM for me to bring cash to her. THIS IS ABSURD. I had to go home for another check so I could get CASH FOR DR. CAPUTO BEFORE HE WOULD PERFORM THE SURGERY. I called Dr. Caputo's office (in traffic) from the Garden State Parkway at 4:05 PM to advise Betty that I most likely will be at the office in 15 minutes in Belleville. I was told by Betty that she was canceling the surgery for the next morning. She suggested I bring the cash in the morning and that they could reschedule the surgery for next Tuesday, August 23, 2010. The reason the surgery was scheduled in early August is that Dr. Caputo advised it takes 6 weeks for the redness in the eye to go away. I did not want my wife to have either a red eye for the wedding pictures or to have a crossed eye. This is our only daughter that was getting married and we, as any parents would wish, wanted the day to be perfect.
I have numerous close friends that are doctors and fully understand the problems with getting physicians getting paid even considering that with the insurance coverage that she has as a public school teacher, there is no likelihood that this will not be the case. TO REFUSE TO ACCEPT MY CHECK WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE IS INEXCUSABLE.
I called the office to speak to Dr. Caputo and sent him 2 faxes to speak to me. He has not had the courtesy or manlihood to speak to me. NO WHERE IN HIS OFFICE IS THERE A NOTICE POSTED THAT HE DOES NO ACCEPT INSURANCE AS PAYMENT AND THAT PAYMENT MUST BE MADE IN CASH!!!!!

To say that the DR. CAPUTO created extreme anguish would be an understatement. To date, he has still failed to respond to me in any way. I have obtained a letter from another eye surgeon who certifies that this treatment and resulting anguish is a deviation from accepted medical standards. Perhaps the suit from my lawyer will get a response from this heartless, greedy Doctor.

There are many other great eye surgeons, including Dr. Wagner who is associated with Dr. Caputo. If you want courtesy and truth about payment, do not use the office of Dr. Caputo.His lack of truthfulness and the obnoxious treatment by his office is inexcusable. When you are having delicate eye surgery, you need to feel comfortable and confident with the surgeon performing the procedure. Dr. Caputo and his staff will not make you comfortable or confident. Unfortunately, this once caring eye surgeon has put money before the physical and emotional well being of his patients. As a professional, I would never recommend Dr. Caputo to anyone for treatment.
