My husband and I both go to Azalea Skin Care and have the utmost confidence in Dr. Ketcham and his staff. We have always been treated with respect and had our questions answered thoroughly and completely. We each have had several skin cancers removed. Dr. Ketcham takes pride in his work and is a skilled surgeon working hard to minimize scarring - that's the kind of dematologist I want! Kathy Poole is a very competent and compassionate nurse - We have only good things to say about this practice.

A great comfortable place to seek help for skin issues. Cathy Poole is wonderful along with Shelley Bunting and some others in the office...However, there is a female there who calls patients back, about appointments and such (has an accent) who is extremely cold and talks to you like a dog. This has happened twice to me alone so I highly doubt I am the only one who is treated so rudely. This women....whoever she is, really takes away from this business... which is otherwise composed of some very friendly and down to earth people. She needs to be recorded in the act!! hmmm.....

After almost 9 years at Azalea Skin Treatment Center in Garner, I'm afraid we are going to have to find another dermatologist.
We have often had abnormally long waits, sometimes over an hour after our scheduled appointment time. This last time was the 'last straw'.
I made my oldest sons appointment over one month ahead of time. It was on a Friday and his only day off that week He arrived about 15 minutes before his appointment time, and I came about 10 minutes later. Thirty-five minutes later, he had still not been called back. He was getting a bit antsy, but I reminded him that we always have a wait at this office.
My husband had become so angry about his wait at his last visit and the attitude of the office staff about it that he had already vowed to never go back again.

When it was nearly an hour after my sons appoiintment (10 am), I finally went to the window and explained that it was pretty difficult to get my guys to agree to go the to doctor at all, but that this long wait was making it worse. I asked how much longer it might be and was told it could be anywhere from 30 minutes and possibly up to an hour more. There was no apology, no concern for our long wait. It was very matter of fact. She just said that sometimes Dr. Ketcham gets behind, and he currently had THREE more patients ahead of us!! She said they had no control over it. ( I think they should have told us this voluntarily, not after I came to the window to ask.)
My son graciously said he would have to leave because he had many other things to do that day. He reset his appointment. But when we got to the car he told me to cancel it, because their customer service 'stinks'. I never had to cancel it because we shortly received a call that THEY were going to have to cancel his appointment due to scheduling problems!
So alas, I think Dr. Ketcham and his P.A are very good at what they do. However, there are other very good dermatologists in the area, and this kind of treatment is just uncalled for. I've tried to put up with it as long as I could. This is the most uncaring office staff I've ever dealt with. Even if they DON't care that they've kept you waiting way past your scheduled time, they should at least ACT like they do!! Too bad.

I was disappointed to read that Misty E. wasn't pleased with her interaction with myself, Office Mgr., at Azalea Skin Treatment Center. I pride myself in showing as much courtesy and respect as one will allow. Children are welcome at appointments with their parents as long as they aren't a distraction for the quality of medical attention we strive to provide. I have children of my own and make our waiitng area as child friendly as possible. A large percentage of our patient base is our pediatric patients, which are joy to see.
I was certainly glad to read that all other aspects of the visit were pleasing. Patient surveys are available in our office to offer feedback, and this form of communication is most appreciated to improve our level of customer service. Thank you for visiting Azalea Skin Treatment Center.

My husband and I both had appointments at the same time and our 2 year old daughter was with us. The Office Manager called me back and told me that I needed to have provided childcare for my child. She said the Dr. didn't allow children to be with you. (Funny the waiting room had toys and the bathroom had a sign saying do not up diapers in the trash can!) I told her to let the Dr. know I was there and he could still see me, I turned around and walked away. As I was walking away she said, "Ma'am........do you want to be seen at all today"? In a really hateful voice. The nurse called me back and was so sweet to my little one, she even gave her a sticker. The Dr. had no problem seeing me with my daughter. The Office Manager is very UNFRIENDLY and RUDE. The Dr. was to the point but good, and the nurses were great. Avoid this Office Manager, she really hates her job!!!!!!!!!! She should work with prison death row inmates......they would benefit greatly from her people skills.

I appreciate Dr. Ketcham's obvious desire to do his best for his patients. Both my husband and I wanted to express our gratitude for the beautiful job he did.

After reading alot of these reviews, I was hesitant about my first visit to Azalea Skin Clinic. They were very helpful, explaining my insurance benefits before I was seen. My wait in the waiting room was not longer than any other offices I have been to in the area. I was a patient of Dr. Ketchams. He looked at all my moles, etc. in my full skin exam. He did a couple biopsies and gave me the number to call for results, which I like so that I can get results at my convenience, not during office hours. I did have questions once I got home, and Cece (nurse) was so very nice. She explained everything to me...again! This is a great office, just busy.

At azalea, there is sometimes a wait but the office staff does a good job letting you know that sometimes with the amount of procedures dr ketcham does his schedule get behind. The staff also ensured me that i was going to get the sam amount of attention when i was placed in a room. I found doctor ketcham to be very helpful and hansome. His nurses were great!!! and as for the FNP"S i cant comment bucause i have never seen them but i am sure if they work for such a great doctor they must be great.I expressed to dr ketcham that i was very pleased and i felt like they took very good care of me his response to me was please leave a comment in our box up front. SO I DID Thanks again to his nurse ashley, she was very sweet! YOU WERE ALL GREAT

Wish I had looked on this website before I went to see Dr. Ketchum at Azalea Skin Center! What a bunch of money hungry, unfriendly, inefficient people! Arriving 15 minutes early for my appointment I was assured Dr. Ketchum was running on time. I was also told that services needed to be prepaid.

When 40 minutes passed I was finally taken back to a room where the nurse asked for payment. After telling her that I had already paid at the front desk, and after she went out to actually check that I was telling the truth (!), Dr. Ketchum finally graced me with his presence 15 minutes later. Dr. Ketchum said a quick hello and then talked to the nurse like I was not even there. When I tried to ask a question about a mole, he seemed annoyed and assured me that he would look at all the moles on my body and do his assessment at that time. He did a quick body search, quick mole removal, suggested I come back for a yearly exam, and was gone.

When I was leaving, you guessed it, I was asked for payment again! And, here??s another kicker --- although I am the paying patient; it is up to me to find out my own test results! They gave me an 866 number to call and a code (that they highly suggested I do not loose, because they would have to pull my chart to retrieve it?.) so I can check on my test results myself. What if the results are bad? Wouldn??t people rather hear that information from their doctor instead of a stranger in a lab?

I will have yearly exams, but certainly not at Azalea Skin Center or any place that Dr. Ketchum works. By being asked for payment three times and realizing I was on my own to find out about my test results, it is crystal clear to me that Azalea Skin Center and Dr. Ketchum are more concerned about money than people.

Dr. Ketchum and staff have always been very professional and helpful when I have scheduled annual visits. My wait has usually been 10 minutes or less upon arrival (that doesn't happen at any of my other doctors).

the doctor and his PA are very capable, explain any concerns. I had skin cancer on my nose, Dr. Ketchum removed it and did a skin graft. Nose looks normal (as much as my nose can!!) and no scarring.

After calling to make an appointment for my son I was put on hold for 4 minutes. The whole time the recorded message was about cosmetic services offered at the practice (wrinkle reduction, hair removal, etc.) By the time the receptionist picked up I wasn't sure the office provided the medical care my son needed (help with an abscessing finger). I asked if they could help my son and was not give a clear answer, just an insistence that I make set an appointment. After explaining that I didn't want to spend my time and money at an appointment that may or may not be able to provide the service I needed, I was told "Maybe you sould find another dermatologist". I worked for a dermatoligst for 5 years and if I ever spoke to a patient like that my doctor would have had my head on a platter. Awful.

I went to this doctor because the office location was convenient. The treatment I received when I walked in the door should have been a sign, I wish I would have walked out then and not wasted 2 hours of my day!

The office staff is the rudest group of people I've ever dealt with in my life - and no wonder - the place is run by an office manager who needs to get a job that doesn't rely on customer service. Don't bother complaining about your wait because your time is not important to these folks.

Once I finally got in to see Dr. Ketcham he was as unfriendly as his staff. What ever happened to bed side manner?

A few weeks after my visit to Azalea, I started looking for a new dermatologist in the area and I came across an article in the Wall Street Journal, that questions Dr. K's billing practices and ethics! Wow, I wish I would have known before going to him. Here is the link to the article: http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB112804161950856333-IJjfYNjlaZ4n56uZHmJbaWJm4.html

A little research paid off. If you are looking for a dermatologist in the Raleigh area I highly recommend Dr. Echt. She is a smart doctor who actually cares about her patients, not to mention that her office is run very professionally. It's a bit of a drive to her North Raleigh office, but trust me it's worth it!

From the moment I walked through the door I knew I was in for a roller coaster ride. The waiting area had 7 people sitting there and once I finally checked in I was told it would be a 30 minute wait and would I like to reschedule my visit( I was already 15 minutes early ). After hearing this I asked to speak to the Office Manager. Well after 5 minutes of nothing she finally appeared out of a corner office just to tell me that there was nothing she could do. I ended up getting seen 45 minutes after my arrival only ....No way in hell will I be going back to this circus ran show. This place receives an F all the way around.

I've been going to Azalea for over a year. My brother was diagnosed with melanoma a few years ago, so I want to keep a close watch on my fair, moley skin. I have to disagree with a lot of the reviews on here. I've always been treated professionally and cordially by the entire staff. Dr. Ketchum has been wonderful as well. He even praised me for seeing a mole that he missed and yes, it came back pre-cancerous. I've probably had 50 or more moles removed over the past year and of those, at least 35 to 40 have come back as precancerous. I will continue to go to him, as I have complete trust in his judgement and surgical skills.

I went to my appointment to Azalea Skin Treatment Center early. I have been Dr. Ketcham's patient from his Cary office. I went to his office in Garner. The personnel in the front office was horrible, They know nothing about customer relations. They told me that my insurance is not effective before Jan, which was not correct since I used it last week at the eye dr. They told me that I have to pay $166. Since my insurance is with BCBS in CA, insurance office was closed (they are 3 hours behind). I told them that if I pay they have to give me a letter saying that they will pay that money back to me when insurance fixes their problem. They said no, I said I need to talk to my husband, but they did not let me use their phone to make a decision. I told them I have to go to my car to call my husband and will let them know very quick, they said Ok. In 3 minutes I was back, since my husband said that once the insurance office opens it should be fixed. When I came back they told me that I have to now wait at least 1hr to be seen by a dr. My appointment was at 8:50. I was there at 8:30. Because of this phone call I had to make to my husband from my car, it was 9:00. When I came back they told me I now have to wait at least 1 hr to be seen by the dr. Basically the front office personnel did this to me to get back at me. I told them I can't since I drove over an hour to get there and took time off. The two women who are in the front office were very nasty and conceited. They even made up a story to the office manager that I was putting them down. I did not do anything to them. I was just upset about the insurance, which had nothing to do with them. I talked to the office manager, who was kind enough to listen to me, and gave my feedback and left the office without being seen. I would not suggest anybody to go to that office in Garner because front office personnel knows NOTHING about customer service. Because of them I lost 2 hours of my work time.
I will be complaining to the Better Business Bureau and whatever it takes.

I am fair skinned and have had skin checks annually in Vermont where I am from. I moved to NC 2 years ago and finally got to a dermatologist down here. He seemed very competent and friendly. He noticed 4 spots which he called precancerous or atypical moles and did shave biopsies. 2 weeks later I was called to schedule 3 surgeries because one was severely atypical and 2 were mild to moderately atypical. In Vermont I only had had 1 or 2 removed over the years but to have 3 diagnosed, as needing surgery, in one visit was alarming. I wasn't sure how serious it was to have them removed. Maybe he is very cautious. I have since had my leg done. He seems competent and did a very good job on my leg. He used dissolvable stitches underneath the incision. It generally doesnt hurt much, just feels like a bruise so I feel he does good work surgically.

His front office staff are very fast and efficient. Our wait time was long during the first visit and short the second. The med assistants and nurse seemed friendly enough. The checkout girl was not super friendly but okay.

On one hand it is very good to know that a precancerous mole is not going unnoticed, but on the other hand I hope I'm not getting scalpeled any more than necessary. I had them give me a copy of the lab pathology report and it did recommend excision for 3 out of the 4. I feel he is very cautious.

I can see why others feel he is scalpel-happy. 3 out of 4 mole biopsies needing further excision seem like a lot. My guess is that he is very cautious and doesn't want to leave anything questionable to wonder about.

In general I liked him, and felt the office was organized and well-run. Regarding future surgeries I might just get a second opinion.

I went to Dr Ketcham several times. The first time he did a skin exam. On the same visit, he removed two moles. This was great, because most dermatologists make you come back for removals which is really a waste of time. The removals were done in the same room after numbing. It did not hurt and healed without even a scar. I call him scalpel happy because he is not hesitant to remove anything you want removed or anything that he thinks could be suspicious. I'm glad because what he removed off my back turned out to be precancerous. It is easy to get appointments and follow up appointments without much delay.

My only complaint was with billing and checkout. Although I am only supposed to pay 20% of the contract rate, they make you sign an estimate that says you will pay your 20% (or whatever your plan is) and they write in the retail rate (which could be 50-100% more). So after 3 visits, they over charged me by $320 and it took 3 months and 4 phone calls for me to get the refund. The person at checkout would not bend at all charging me those retail rates, even when I brought in a print out from my insurance carrier with their negotiated contract rate. If I can look up these rates, I'm certain they could as well but I'm guessing they charge retail in the assumption that not everyone will pursue a reimbursement.

I did end up complaining to my insurance carrier. They told me that this practice is not allowed and I should have pointed out that it says on the back of my card "Reminder to Providers: Please do not collect deductible or coinsurance at the time of service." So just be aware of this.

Was seeing Dr. Ketcham for skin cancer and sun damage. I did not find his style appealing as he was always reluctant to discuss treatment and answer my questions. I was never too fearful of my skin cancer except when I was there at his office and in their care...and then I was always intimidated and frightened by them. He commented that my sun damage was very alarming and sounded as if there were little or no hope. In the end, it all could have been treated in entirety with 2 or 3 weeks use of Effudex (a $10 chemo cream). He will let you know that he is the doctor and you are the patient. He is not in the mood to hear your input, concerns, wishes, opinions, suggestions, etc. I think he is generally quite competent and will take good care of you especially if you prefer to remain uninvolved with your care and treatment. He is a bit conservative in my opinion and really likes to use the knife a lot....I like to explore alternative treatments before resorting to cut and burn. Personally, I need a doctor who can answer all my questions and defend his actions without getting impatient or irritated. The doctor needs to have an airtight defense such that I can't poke any holes in his actions, strategy, or plan. A doctor should welcome such inquisitions to confirm whether he/she is at the top of their game. That is, they should be able to answer all questions quickly and defintevily so the patient can clearly recognize who the expert is. If not, they need to do more work to get there.

His assistant Shelley (although friendly) struck me as being extremely incompetent and she was frequnetly wrong about her diagnosis and treatments. I would avoid seeing her if possible.

We were very pleased with the Doctor at Azalea Skin Treatment. He is very nice and communicated with us well. We did have an extended wait in the waiting room and in the room. Not sure if that was a scheduling issue or normal. Once the doctor met with us, he diagnosed the problem accurately. On the follow-up visit, he did the surgery, and the staff filed the insurance for us. We will definitely use them again.

PROS: Very nice, knowledgeable staff
CONS: You might have to wait

I highly recommend Azalea Skin Treatment Center. As a matter of fact, I wish the doctor there was a general practitioner instead of a dermatologist, so I could see her as my primary care physician for all my health care needs.

Everyone in the office was friendly and helpful. I was seen promptly for my appointments. Both the doctor and nurse diagnosed my condition right away, even though I had seen other doctors about the specific problem I was having and they had no idea what was wrong.

Unless I move far away or the doctors at Azalea Skin Treatment Center close up shop, I will never go to a different dermatologist.
