Dr. Tubman and his medical team met with my two brothers-in-law and me early on 9/21/10 to explain the magnitude of a stroke that my 44 year old husband had suffered early that morning. Dr. Tubman explained that a clot formed as a result of a disection of my husband's left carotid artery that formed a clot that traveled to the base of the left side of my husband's brain. This clot left my husband 'paralyzed' on his right side with no feeling on his right side.
In order to remove the clot, Dr. Tubman and his team gained approval from us for Dr. Tubman to utilize an expiremental device called a penumbra. Dr. Tubman is one of a small number of physicians trained and skilled to utilize this device. He gave us the odds of further injury, the odds of successful removal of the clot and the odds of no improvement and we agreed that a 40% chance of success vs 20% chance of failure were odds we needed to take.
The procedure to insert a stint and remove the clot were estimated to last from 2-6 hours. My husband entered surgery around 9:30 am that day and we were told that the stint had been successfully placed within the first hour. About 1 1/2 hours later, Dr. Tubman arrived to let us know that the procedure was successful and within minutes of Dan's arrival into recovery, he was able to squeeze his right hand and move his right foot!
Within one hour, he was able to raise his right leg and hold for a count of 10.
My husband was walking on the 2nd day following this procedure and has full function of his right side although he continues to work on motor skills.
We know that we are so so fortunate that he is doing so amazingly well. Had it not been for the calm nature and tremendously skilled surgeon, Dr. Tubman, and the amazing medical team that worked on my husband, and phenomenal Abbott Northwestern facility, we could have had a far different outcome.
We can not thank Dr. Tubman, Jill Scholz, NP and all the wonderful nurses and physicians for saving my husband's life.
