Despite lots of professional claims to the contrary, there are precious few physicians and/or therapists who genuinely grasp "from the outside" what are the extents of the enigmas, tortures, ambushes, misunderstandings; functional, physical and existential difficulties; and brilliancies, beauties and potential co-morbidities of what is so simply called "autism." Doug Geenens, D.O., is one of those precious few.

It would be a disservice to Dr. Geenens to presume to attempt to cram into a paragraph or two a description of his brilliance as a doctor, a D.O. psychiatrist, a mentor and simply as a decent human being. I'm a fairly decent writer, and already I give up!

Dr. Geenens has been my "autism" physician for over five (5) years. Now into my fifth decade of life with autism, I can testify without equivocation that of dozens of doctors and therapists I've encountered in my lifetime, Dr. Geenens is the ONLY physician who has grasped the condition and the needs of people who have lives that must be lived along "the autism spectrum." I've encountered only two therapists (and one of those was 20 years ago) who truly knew how to try to help me, but only one doctor: Doug Geenens.

Many people who have children with possible psychiatric needs, and many, many parents with children suspected of or having been diagnosed as having some degree of autism, frantically ask me for the name of "a good doctor." Dr. Doug Geenens is the only psychiatric physician to whom I will unequivocally refer these frightened parents and their children.

Dr. Geenens is also the only psychiatric physician to whom I will unequivocally refer autistic adults.

As happens with many who are simply the best at what they do, I've seen Dr. Geenens endure grossly slanderous and publicized attacks by insanely jealous and mediocre vipers attempting to viciously destroy the man, the doctor, the brilliance, the expertise and the professional stature to which mediocre vipers simply cannot attain. Dr. Geenens emerged dignified and as brilliant as ever.

Dr. Geenens possesses brilliance and expertise that is well-recognized nationally. To have Dr. Geenens available to those of us in the Kansas City area is simply a treasured blessing. Intending no hyperbole whatsoever, if I had to move across the country, I would periodically return to Kansas City for the sole purpose of remaining under the wise, careful, brilliant and compassionate care of Dr. Doug Geenens.

More about Douglas L. Geenens, DO

I help with standard psychiatric services, with a different approach. Current concepts in professional boundaries teach doctors: the most important person in the room is the physician. I disagree. Throughout my career I have acted on behalf of my patients first. Clinicians who are less involved with their patients are protecting themselves to be "safer." But this distance can be perceived as cold and distant; not connected, lacking empathy. Many patients prefer a doctor who is warm and engaging, nurturing, not punitive, critical or condemning. Many patients suffer from a lack of nurturance and may benefit from additional contact with the doctor. I am not naive about professional boundaries, but the patient is always first, and I try to apply that direct, warm, human relationship in all my work. I'm a person helping another person. I'm your doctor but I'm there for you, not me.
