Dr. Downer specializes in hip replacements, and one is only a handful of doctors in the United States that specializes in the minimally invasive, broach only anterior approach to hip replacement as taught by the masters in Europe. Dr. Downer also has an MBA from one of the top five business schools in the world, so his expertise is unmatched, and that's why I selected him to replace my right hip with the DePuy Corail system and Altrax ceramic liner with cross-linked polymer. My physician installed the latest and greatest hydroxyapatite coated titanium stem, which should be good for over 20,000,000 cycles (steps, strides), meaning at least 50 years of service. Insurance paid for about 92% of the cost, and Dr. Downer's staff was very professional about handling the scheduling and remaining billing through Orthopedic Surgeons of Seattle.

I had surgery on a Tuesday morning, and I was home by Thursday night with the help of a walker. I was able to maintain my own care, and by the following Thursday (10 days), I was back to driving. I was back to work 24 days after the surgery, and I'm a chef, and the minimum downtime was incredible. By staying on the Celebrex/Tylenol regimen my pain was minimal, and after the second month I no longer needed a cane to walk.

It's been over four months, and now I can climb stairs while holding groceries and not using the handrail. For me, Dr. Downer's skill made it all possible, and still cannot believe anyone else had a negative experience, as there must be some missing information. I will say that having a good insurance company is a big plus.

I had an anterior approach implant surgery. Dr Downer and his staff made the experience much easier than I expected. Insurance paperwork was a non-issue. I had heard other stories of hip replacements that were just horrific with prolonged therapy and recovery time. If I had a question, his competent staff was there to answer it. Dr Downer is not what I would call a "Chatty" person, but there was nothing to chat about. There were few post operative restrictions.."let pain be your guide" Call if you have a question. I found his "bedside manner" more than adequate. What more could one want?

I, also, had a terrible experience post-op with Dr Downer from hip arthroscopy. He never gave me guidelines for recovery and rehab. He seemed disinterested and rushed at every followup appointment post-op. He lack of bedside manner has made my recovery much more difficult than it needed to be. I would not recommend him or seek further treatment from him. I am terrible disappointed in SOC.

First two appointments with Dr. Downer were positive. Post operative care has been disappointing. After having arthroscopic hip surgery, Dr. Downer has provided no clear direction for rehab and recovery. Appointments at 1 week and 6 weeks post-op were rushed. I had to keep stopping him and asking questions until I got the information I needed. He was in a hurry to leave the room and move on the next patient. It is very frustrating to feel like you are having to figure out the rehab/recovery on your own.
