I have been on both sides of the desk. I have been the medical office assistant that the patients scream (yes, scream) at when a doctor is running behind. I have seen the staff at Smaldore handle this with as much tact as is possible in that impossible situation. As for requesting co-pay during sign-in, this is a common practice at most doctor's offices. Just remember, each of these doctors at this practice if they are rushed is doing so becuase they are trying to keep up with your demands as a patient to stay on time and when they are behind it is because they have spent needed extra time with another patient just as you would want them to do for you. The unfortunate bottom line is that regardless of where a doctor's heart is they still have to be able to pay their staff and themselves from the revenue of the ever shrinking insurance reimbursement. Overall, I have been with this practice for over 15 years. At some points I have paid out of pocket to see them when my insurance wasn't accepted by them (STUPID TRICARE) because each of these doctors (Greg, Danielle, Kellie & Steve) at some point have gone out of their way for one of my family members.

I agree with others, Dr. Kelly Smaldore was friendly at first but now she makes you feel rushed and doesn't listen very well/on the computer more than personal time with the patient/maybe she has too many cases or something. Charges are done on accounts that should not be and does not inform the patient that they are being submitted to the insurance company. The office staff on the phone are rude and very unfriendly. The office is all about money now. That is a shame because she was a good doctor to go. She gave a medicine that almost killed me. I am sad but I will be looking for another doctor soon because my trust in her has been broken. :(

I saw Dr. Kelli for years. At first she was a caring doctor. Then she became rushed, abrupt, and I felt like she didn't listen to my concerns. I agree with many of the other comments about the staff. Although there are many very nice ones. A handful are very rude and money is a definite focus. Of course you want to get paid, but as stated, it was overboard, and distrustful. A previous person mentioned how she came 6 minutes late and was reprimanded. I came 4 minutes late and was told I may not be seen. I said, "good, I didn't want to come in the first place! She wants to see me so whatever you want to do is fine with me!" I waited 2 hours once for an appointment. I have no idea about the other doctors in the office. The office is very clean, no complaints there.

Well, It seems some of you love the doctors and would consider leaving and going somewhere else because of a greeter or assistant. That's nuts! You complainers have never had to deal with deadlines, isurance companys, co-pays, deductables etc. etc. I'm sure with lawyers trying to sue every doctor for a hang nail and the cost of malpractice insurance you're lucky to have a doctor to go to! Take a breath, you blood pressure might not be so high! Smile, maybe they'll smile back!

I love smalldore family practice. I have been going there since I was 8. Now being 26. My 3 yr old has been going since birth. When my daughter is sick they have always taken her same day. The staff is usually always friendly. I have no complaints. At any docs u will have to wait and when don't you have to pay before you are seen?

Dr. Greg is always patient and he listens to all my concerns. I just wish I didn't have to wait so long to be seen. I understand minimal waits but the office staff could/should do more to convey to the patients why they haven't yet been seen my their doctor. I don't know if it is "indifference" or office practice that patients not be apprised of the basis for their having to wait beyond their appointment time.

I no longer go to Smaldore because of similar complaints. I LOVED my Dr., who happened to be a Physician's Assistant, but the staff was very rude. I ended up switching after they insisted I make my $20 co-pay before I saw the doctor instead of when I came out. (I was the sickest I'd ever been with Bronchitis and just wanted to sit down and wait!) They acted like I was going to sneak out the back without paying!

I have been seeing Dr Gregg for about ten years. The man saved my life when he sent me for a colonoscopy at the age of forty instead of the usual fifty years old. Pre cancer cells were found and removed. Be prepared to wait awhile to see Dr Gregg when you arrive for your appointment. But also be prepared to be given as much time as is needed to have a thorough review of you medical problems. Dr Gregg is kind, dedicated and a healer as opposed to doctors who will give you your ten minutes and push you out the door. I have had to call on weekends when ill and have found that the on-call doctor has always been helpful and willing to call in a script to help me recover. The support staff are very kind and helpful. I have always been treated with respect and a smile or a few words of concern. A previous critic complained that they are always required to show their insurance card at each visit. Well, insurance plans change as do providers. This is part of managed care. It takes only a minute to produce the card and check your current personal information for changes. My only complaint is that as the practice continues to grow it is harder to get an emergency appointment. You may have to go to patient first if you need to be seen right away for things like the flu.

I think this is a wonderful place to go, for old and young. I do not understand how someone can say the staff is rude, maybe it is their own personna.{client attitude check} I have never ever gotten that feeling, even when I am sick, they do not act like they are afraid of me. I would recommend Smaldore Family Practice to everyone! Oh and another thing, I have NEVER had to *over* wait to for my appointments.

Whomever wrote the review about it being horrible, may of have a staff member who was overwhelmed or just having a bad day. I have been going to them for over 16 years and have dealt with all the Doctors and they have been nothing but fabulous. Dr. Larry and Dr. Greg and Dr Steve have always taken the time to find out what is wrong with me. I don't feel pushed away, I feel taken care of. I live in Hagerstown and still drive all the way to see them. I love them.

Staff is terrible. I thought the staff was ignorant and rude when I called. They did not want to take time to explain why they could not talk to me. I was insulted and did not want to talk or work with them anymore. However, I called back and talked to Katie and she told me that if I didn't stop complaining that she was going to "take care of me."

Good service from the physicians, you never wait long past your appointment time, and they are all very capable. But I agree with previous reviews that the atmosphere of the office staff towards patients is somewhat hostile. They questioned me very closely and almost wouldn't accept my check when I changed addresses and hadn't yet got around to going to the MVA to get a paper change of address card to put with my drivers license. They put stickers on all the magazines so nobody will steal them. They make you hand over your insurance card on every single visit. It's just all too thorough and the clear message to the patient is every client is a potential magazine thief and deadbeat.

I love Dr Steve !!!! I have been seeing Dr Steve for about 15 yrs or so now. When my Insurance coverage changed the first thing I did was call and see if it was a plan Dr Steve accepted and he did Thank God.. He has been so kind and patient, Always explains everything to me in ENGLISH not DR talk. When I called his office to seek advice about a pain in my stomach was told to go to the Emergency room. Well I am glad i did, I was admitted for emergency surgery because my appendix was about to burst. Dr Steve office called to check on me the next morning and schedule a follow up appointment. He is truly a caring Dr I wouldn't trade him for anyone no matter what.

After seeing Dr. Greg for over 10 years I have recently moved to Ohio and I dread the thought of finding another doctor as good as Dr. Greg. The comments that people have made about him are truly accurate. He always seemed to care. I really didn??t see him a lot but when I did I felt like I was discussing my issue with a friend.

I also saw Dr. Steve a few times and I really liked him as well. He was the type of doctor that always had a story...great guy!

The nurses always seemed to be on top of things. I think that it was Nurse Julie that I often spoke with and she has a truly pleasant demeanor.

The front desk staff was, at times, questionable but I never let that stop me from going back.

All in all a great place! Busy, but great. After I had been going there for a few years it seemed like the whole town discovered them and started charging in.

Have been going to Dr. Kellie for 12+ years. My husband sees Dr Greg. We travel 20 minutes out of our way to see them; an indication of how well we like them. Dr. Greg truly saved my husband's life when he came to the hospital on a Saturday evening to follow my husband who was admitted to the ER for severe chest and back pain. Since it was a weekend the hospital wanted to wait until Monday to do an MRI, but Dr. Greg insisted it be done right away so the hospital had to call someone in. What was discovered was an aneurism that was already tearing and bleeding out. Dr. Greg stayed with my husband until he was transported away to a specialty hospital, and he kept in touch with the family throughout his stay.

Often the doctors have called with test results rather than have you wait for the information. Dr. Greg has even called us while on his way to vacation.

When you run late for an appt. remember that the doctors in that practice don't run by a time clock. They give you all the time you need because they care and never rush you. Somewhere down the road, it may be you that causes the next person to have to wait.

As for the staff, they are always courteous and friendly.

My children and I have been seeing Dr. Greg for years now. He is the only doctor I've found who I feel truly listens. I know my family is in great hands! He is thorough but does not order unnecessary tests or medications. He's wonderful at returning calls and when my son was diagnosed with anemia and there was a question of possible leukemia, he checked on us throughout the diagnostic process. Finding a practice like this in an age of HMO, hurry up, rush them out medicine is rare.

My daughter and I have been patients of Dr. Kellie since she was a resident at Franklin Square Hospital, about 1990. I live in Baltimore City, but feel strongly enough to travel to Bel Air to see her. Dr. Kellie is a warm, friendly, caring person, but more importantly she is a great diagnostician, really knows her stuff. She referred me to a specialist, who commented on how smart she was to notice my condition. I have also seen Dr. Dohmeier occasionally when Dr. Kellie wasn't available, and liked him too, but I've not seen Dr. Steve or Ms. Cardoza. My daughter did see Ms. Cardoza once, and was quite upset with some of the things that were said to her--she was told she was obese, which by strict medical standards may have been accurate, but it still hurt her feelings and made her feel inferior. Surely the message could have been given in a better way. I also am overweight, but Dr. Kellie has never belittled me about it, just reminded me of the consequences and that has helped me. It is hard to get an appointment with her now, but she is worth the wait. I had a problem with the office manager about 10 years ago but I don't know if she is the present office manager. The problem was with the billing of a specific procedure. Dr. Kellie told me that my medical insurance would not cover it, but the office staff said that it would. Turns out Dr. Kellie was correct, and I got a nasty letter from the manager about it. When I tried to explain that the staff said to wait and see if the insurance cover it, I was rudely cut off. Of course I paid it, which I had intended to all along. But more recently, about a year ago when the office moved and I did not know about it, I was late for an appointment, and the office manager couldn't have been nicer. She took me into her office while I waited and she got me in to see the doctor in just a few minutes. At other times I've had to wait, but not so long lately. I think they are working on that problem.Thank you, Dr. Kellie--you deserve all the recognition you've received.

I have been coming to this practice for 10+ years. Dr. Steve is my doctor. I cannot say enough about his gentle nature his expertise in his field. I am very happy with his care and would recommend him to anyone. My only problem with this practice is the manager. I always hold my breath if she is in the office. She is rude, treats workers as well as patients with much disrespect. I look forward to the day she retires! She is the only negative cloud on that practice! Health care is a lot more than financial gains, I believe she does not understand this. If you choose this practice for the best treatment by the physicians you have made a good choice. Hopefully you never have to deal with the manager!

I have been coming here for 5 years and love the docs. They are all wonderful and very thorough. Never feel like they shrug any of my concerns off. The front desk personnel, that's another story. It seems like over the past year they have become irritable, nasty, and not very friendly. This has been a number of times over this year. I used to love coming here, but now I am considering going somewhere else because I don't feel like dealing with the attitudes. Just this last time I came, for instance, I was exactly 6 minutes late. I am always on time, just happened to be a bad accident on my way which held me up a good 30 min. ( i travel 1hr and 10 min to get to the office) I walked in and said Hi and stated my name. After looking at the appointment list, the receptionist says,"Your appointment is for 3:00, your late!" She said it very rudely and never said hello or how are you. Now, I know you should be on time always, but this was 6 minutes!!! Then, after printing my forms she told me where to sign and it was another patients information. She then had to change all the info and print out new papers. By this time it was 3:12. She then wrote on top of my chart "patient 15 minutes late" When i saw that it upset me. I went up to the desk after my appointment and said I was 6 min late and the reason for the 15 min was because of you mistake, and I made her change it to say that. P.S. I ALWAYS have to wait at least 30 min-1 hour to see the Doc.

I really like the care the doctors provide. However, trying to get to them is RIDICULOUS! The phone system is horrible. It is too long and difficult to maneuver. The front desk staff tries to be helpful, but it seems they always have new people there. The office manager and billing folks are just HORRIBLE. I have been a patient there for more than 10 years, but they treat me like a criminal when I come in for a balance of $9 that I was waiting until the next office visit to pay. But, if you are willing to wade through all this stuff to get to the doctors, they are really very wonderful.

This is a practice of wonderfully caring physicians who are extremely knowledgeable and thorough. I have known them as residents since before they started their practice and that is why I chose them as care providers for my family. We have been seen by each doctor in the practice and they all have been amazing at treating any ailments we have had. Dr Kellie and Dr. Steve have a genuine care and concern for each of their patients and it shows in their attitude and their work. Dr. Greg has seen us several times and he too has been helpful and caring. My son is now under the care of Dr. Larry who like his peers does the unthinkable. He spends time with each patient and answers all questions put before him in a timely yet thorough manner. He is calm in the face of worried parents and will help with any concerns. One of the best features of this practice is the ability to get someone an appointment to be seen for an acute problem almost immediately. You never have to wait weeks to be seen if there is a medical problem that needs to be dealt with now. The staff are for the most part sweet, pleasant, and professional, and they are as helpful as any staff could be.Weekend coverage physicians do as good a job as they can without access to medical records or the ability to examine the patient. All in all , except for a few minor glitches, this practice should be rated as 5 star. It is as top notch a medical practice as The Fairmont Hotels and Resorts is a top notch hotel chain in quality service and help.

The medical staff is super. The billing Dept. is TOO business like and they treated me as if I were a dead beat . Never missed a payment since the 1990s.

I have been seeing Dr. Steve for 15 years and trust him completely.

Dr. Kellie literally saved my young child's life by correctly diagnosing cancer. With this early detection we were able to get him treatment and he is now in remission.

CONS: she is extremely busy--wait times may be long and long wait for appt

I have been seeing Dr. Steve and Dr. Kellie since they first opened their doors in the 1990'ds and their practice has grown. They have also added some wonderful docs to the practice.

Dr. Wilson is my favorite. He always takes his time with you and always shares a story with you. Dr. Wilson was wonderful after my mom passed away offering me that I could call him anytime and he would get back to me. He also shared his experiences with the dr. that was treating my mom. Made me feel good that she had a good dr.

Have never had a problem getting my girls in to see anyone when they have been sick!!

Had some problems a couple of years ago with the doctors covering for them on weekends but brought it to the Smaldore's attention and they were appreciative.

PROS: excellent staff
CONS: none
