As an outpatient facility, you will find every professional under the sun for whatever disorder your child may have. Facilities (and staff) are very child friendly. Easy to build relationship with the doctors and nurses. And in-patient or out, basically here are the brightest minds in medicine. The downside is that it draws very ill children from all over the world. So the level of acute illness is very high. Your child has to be very ill to be admitted, and sometimes it's so crowded you get bumped to Valley Medical. It may take a lot of advocacy to coordinate your child's care and demand that your child's less-than-life-threatening condition be addressed. That being said, I would not take my child anywhere else.

My nephew was born with life-threatening respiratory problems. He was in the natal ICU for the first weeks of his life.

To this day, I believe my sister and her husband saved his life by going to Lucille Packard for the delivery. It's one of the best children's hospitals on the West Coast.

Have your child at the best place you can find. It may save his life.

Both my children were born in this hospital. It is a world-class university-affiliated teaching hospital so it has doctors with the most up-to-date knowledge and the equipment is superior to those found at other area hospitals. You never know what can go wrong with even a normal birth; serious problems are helicoptered to LPCH. The birthing rooms aren't environmentally the greatest, but if your goal is to have a healthy baby with the best care around, you know you'll get it here. That was our philsophy in choosing this hospital. We also experienced the NICU with our second child. During this scary time, the doctors and nurses (especially!) were so attentive and helpful and understanding to us as nervous and scared parents. And the care we saw them give to all those poor babies was just amazing. That kind of dedication and skill - we are just grateful for it.

PROS: Best children's hospital in the area, hands down
CONS: Birthing rooms aren't the coziest, they are very "hospital-y"

This hospital and the very knowledgable doctor possibly saved my child's life. He had a rare tumor and we went through a very scarey time. Dr. Gamble came through for us! He is a specialist at Lucille Packard. We never came across a rude staff member at Lucille Packard. They were all so friendly and caring. My son was misdiagnosed in Las Vegas and call it mother's intuition but I just knew that doctor was wrong. I took him 9 hours away to Palo Alto, where we saw Dr. Gamble for a second opinion. He knew how far we had come to see him and how worried we were about our son. He also knew that the original diagnosis was wrong. He got us in for an MRI immediately instead of making us wait until the next day. Dr. Gamble correctly diagnosed the tumor in my child and performed the surgery to remove it. He is a superb doctor! It was worth every 9 hour trip and every penny spent to get the best health care for my son! Thanks Lucille Packard and thanks Dr. Gamble!

Our child was born at Lucille Packard. Before the big event, we attended parenting classes there. The nursing staff was very friendly and helpful. The instructors were informative and patient, and the experience was very good overall. It was comforting to know that if something went wrong in the delivery, many specialists were on staff.

My brother had a swollen gland and none of the peninsula hospitals knew what it was. We were recommended to Lucille Packard Children's Hospital and not only did he receive the best care possible, they also found out what was wrong with him. The atmosphere is so family friendly and takes the scare out of visiting the hospital. They have toys, books, and other comfortable things for your childen in every room, office, and corridor. This hospital is huge and God bless the people who work here. It's a really great place.
