I have had 2 shoulders replaced by dr van flanderin and in my books, the man is a genius surgeon! Shoulders are said to be the most problematic & most painful joint to replace. The ONLY pain I ever experienced was the unavoidable pain that hits you when you first come out of surgery in the recovery room. I ended up with 100% mobility in both shoulders, and in the physical therapy I underwent after surgery, none of the physical therapists could believe I was just a few weeks out of shoulder replacement. Admittedly, Van Flanderin is not a great communicator---- when he does his post-surgical rounds (at 5:00 a.m.!), on both occasions I really wanted information on exactly what he had found, exactly what procedures he had executed, etc., and I was frustrated by how little information he provides. But in a choice between a good communicator and a surgeon who can do for me what Geoffrey Van Flanderin did, I would pick Van Flanderin every time. I feel so positive about him that I am on my way to boston tomorrow to see him again and schedule knee replacement of my left knee (yes, I do seem to have a set of lousy joints!). I'm glad to find a website where I can sing his praises!
