Gibbons Family medicine did not notify us in advance of charges they would be levying against us for services outside of our insurance coverage. My wife first visited Gibbons Family medicine on 2/05/10. It was a standard visit involving minor lab work. We received a bill from them on 4/16/10 for $202.11 We called our insurance, BCBS of Indiana, who said that Gibbons Family Medicine did not use an in-network-provider for our lab work. My wife had a scheduled appointment with them on 4/19/10. We went in to speak to them about the bill to see if what was wrong. After dealing with the nurse/receptionists at the front desk, we finally got a hold of the office manager, Nancy, who informed us that it was our responsibility to see the signs in the bathroom for "Spectrum Labs" and call our insurance company to verify that we would not be charged. Do you call the seed manufacturer when you buy a loaf of bread to see if he is going to charge you? No, the costs of business are rolled up to the price you see at the cash register when you check out. No, you don't. To top this off, she hands us a paper indicating our lab coverage. Which to her detriment is clearly not the lab they use, which means they knew what labs were acceptable and they did not inform us we would be paying out of pocket. Every doctor we have been to in the past tells us this IN ADVANCE, you know that ridiculously long period where you fill out 30 forms and they run your insurance? Right, that's where one of the service components in this industry comes in.. but not at Gibbons Family Medicine. Every doctor I have ever been to tells me I can go get my lab work done at XXX lab because their in house lab will cost us a lot of extra money. I don't know what kind of kick backs these guys get from their labs for sending in lab work, but clearly it is better than dealing with the cost of an angry and motivated patient. To top this off, the office manager, Nancy, was extremely rude and upset the both of us very quickly with her nonchalant, non-caring, completely unhelpful attitude about something we feel was a lack of communication and service on their side.

Dr. Gibbons is always wonderful! She listens carefully and you never feel like you are being rushed out the door. I always feel like I am her only patient. She is great in managing all aspects of my health care needs. She is also honest and I don't feel like she just gives out medication to appease her patients. I would recommend her to anyone.
