We started seeing Dr. Mike Knudsen back in fall of 2008 and have been an avid supporter ever since. He was quick to act on my oldest daughter's tonsillitis and sleep apnea and get us referral to an ENT within the first week of being seen. Within 2 weeks of being in his care my daughter had a visit with Dr Mike, approval for ENT, emergency scheduled tonsillitis surgery scheduled and taken care of. The process was quick, and painless in execution, even with the initial insurance processing issues I had upfront with getting her medical insurance transferred. He was able to answer all of my questions effectively and explained everything to me in a way that made sense and was understandable. When it came to my younger daughter's dynamics he has been a wealth of information, treating her since age 2. She has since been diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, Oppositional Defiance, food allergies, and a case of severe asthma. He has always been quick to react to her medical needs and proactive in treatment of her complex medical history and has been extremely attentive in listening to our problems and concerns. He is, beyond a doubt, the most regarded physician in the practice, and I would recommend him to anyone who has a child who has complicated dynamics or health care concerns. He has always gone above and beyond to make sure that my daughter was well cared for, even if it meant that we we were referred to outside specialists for intervention and care. He has written numerous letters to our school to help me advocate as a special needs parent and has helped us draft medical plans for the school setting to ensure my daughter's safety. I can see that there are some people who didn't feel that he "listened"... but I can assure you, that while he does kinda bounce around the room a lot, and appear to be in and out rather quickly, he does retain quite a bit of information. He also is very personable with the kids and spends a lot of time making sure they are comfortable. He laughs a lot and tries to make sure the kids know that the doctor's office does not have to be a scary place for them. Sometimes it seems like he isn't paying attention to the parents, but I believe it is because he is so focused on my kids that it appears that way. Because if I ask him a direct question, he can give me a ton of information, and has always provided detailed and informative care for each of my children, no matter what the circumstances. I can tell you from experience, that I am one of the most qualified to give an opinion about this practice and this doctor because we have spent a lot of time in that office, receiving care. My kids have been complicated in their history, but Dr Mike has always made sure that the complications were easier to manage, and has always kept on top of things. He has made sure that the right medications were approved by insurance and has always double checked (even himself) on diagnosis and care and treatment plans when things were in question. He is, without a doubt, the best doctor I have ever run across.

My *first* impression of Dr. Mike reflected what another poster here said, and that is I thought he wasn't really listening to my concerns or input. I brought my son in for a second opinion after recently having been diagnosed with Autism. Dr. Mike spent about 15 minutes with us, casually observing my son before declaring that he didn't think Autism was what we were dealing with. It struck me as odd because the other evals we had were comprised of HOURS of observation, all of which he negated in 15 minutes of casual observation. It struck me as odd.

Flash forward 3 years and I've got a completely different opinion. He might not have seemed like he was paying much attention, but considering he only met my son ONCE three years ago, he certainly retained a lot of information about my son, mentioned that he had taken lots of notes after we left that day, and also that he had expected that at about this time, we'd be back for an ADHD assessment. He went on to explain that he didn't mean to give the impression that my son's autism diagnosis was incorrect, but that it most likely existed along with ADHD, which is hard to determine at just 3 years old.

At this second visit, not only was he on time (actually called us back EARLY which is unheard of these days), but he spent the entire hour listening to my deeply detailed concerns and provided some excellent, sound advice.

After this second visit, it became abundantly clear to me why Dr. Mike is highly regarded in his field. He also gave me the impression he takes ADD/ADHD seriously, and is not the kind of doctor who just hands out prescriptions for this disorder indiscriminately.

Dr. Knudsen is a kind man and the children truly love him! He believes in letting moms follow their own intuition. That can be great for moms who have a definitely parenting style. But I found it very stressful and hard to trust his thinking and comments, as he would give me one set of advice and advise a friend with a baby the same age differently. The advice was almost conflicting, and I would rather have a doctor who has a firm belief in a way things should be done.

We felt as if Dr. Knudsen did not listen to us at all. We saw him 3 times before we decided not to go back to him. He brushed off all of our developmental concerns and laughed at us. He was the first pediatrician we saw in NC.

I recently saw Dr. Knudeson for a second opinion for my child. At the initial appointment, I was pleased with the information and his rapport with my child. However, follow-up on her problems left a lot to be desired-I left a message when he was out of town and was told he would return the call Monday...well Monday came and went..in all it was a week after I was told to expect a phone call before I was contacted. At that time I was asked if I had decided to switch to them as a primary care ped and I honestly told them I was waiting to see how this interaction turned out, as the return call had been so long in coming. I also proceeded to tell them my child was still having problems. The message I received back from the doctor was brief and had no suggestions for helping my child-it was more of a "good luck, see ya!" type of message. I was very angry and truly feel that this occurred because I had not yet committed to switching to their practice.

When you have a child, it is so hard to find the right person to help you care for them. I have been so pleased to have found Dr. Knudsen! He is friendly, listens to all my concerns, and goes above and beyond to make sure my children are cared for and brought back to health.
