PATIENTS NEED TO BE VERY PROACTIVE WITH THIS DOCTOR AND TO READ INDEPENDENTLY

Dr. Hoekzema (Dr. H) was my only doctor for over 6 years and completely missed my main medical problem--multiple sclerosis (MS).

The file Dr. H maintained about me shows that he knew I was concerned about MS--because I had had optic neuritis before starting to see him. My medical file also noted that I had never had an MRI.

Unfortunately I didn't know that I should have pushed Dr. H for an MRI or a referral to a neurologist.

Dr. H ordered only very basic blood/urine tests, conducted his own version of a neurological exam and confidently assured me that I was healthy. Because I didn't want to have MS, I was relieved.

Eventually he could no longer explain away my problems as "stress" or "some virus". The last thing he told me was that the numbness that had spread up one leg across my torso and down the other leg was "not consistent with MS".

Dr. H did not help me locate or get an appointment with any neurologist even after my widespread numbness. When I did manage to get in to see a neurologist after a 2 month wait (during which I had varying degrees of numbness below the waist and difficulties walking), that neurologist told me that the numbness I was experiencing was "completely consistent with MS lesions on the spinal cord". After thorough testing (including the MRI which Dr H never found necessary), the neurologist diagnosed me with MS and immediately started me on medication to slow the damage to my brain and spinal cord.

During the entire time that I was Dr. H's patient, FDA approved disease modifying therapies for MS were available and MRI was a widely accepted diagnostic tool. Unfortunately I didn't know enough to insist on appropriate testing and treatment.

Dr. H is pleasant and extremely confident in his abilities. I now know that he didn't have enough neurological training to give or exclude a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. I wish he had known that and referred me to a specialist. I am still angry with myself for trusting Dr. H.
