I read the reviews on this website before I decided to go in. I noticed one of the reviews said he was kind of cold at first, and then got friendlier. That seemed to happen to me for a while? He would always ask about my family and how they were doing before I left. But shortly after that, our sessions consisted of us sitting down and he would literally just ask "So what do you want to talk about this week? What's going on in your life." If nothing really went on, there was an awkward silence before he cut the appointment short. His sessions are 20 minutes each and each session he acts like he would rather be somewhere else. The last visit I went with him, I had apologized for being late after nearly getting in a big accident. After some talking, he started yelling at me saying it was my fault if anyone got in an accident and all this nonsense. He only yelled for a few minutes, but I was about ready to get up and leave. I am never going back to this doctor. He is a very cold man. If you are reading this, Dr, please, for the sake of humanity, retire.

The derogatory reviews of Dr. Hurwitz are snapshots from specific experiences with him. What those reviewers don't understand is how Dr. Hurwitz's approach--while seemingly cold and distant--builds a lasting impact that slowly, subtly, yet effectively rebuilds those inner "tapes" that were recorded in your youngest days. I know and understand this now from personal experience. Dr. Hurwitz treated me over thirty years ago. I saw him for over a year. I moved on to other cities and jobs and have seen multiple therapists since then. As I developed a better and clearer understanding of myself and my issues, many of his simple statements and responses have come back to me and now make abundant sense. Adults may find him distasteful and offensive; but he is an outstanding child psychiatrist. I wish I'd been able to see him when I was five years old. He would have saved me the years of anguish and pain it took to discover self esteem. I can't recommend Dr. Hurwitz to adults or couples with adult issues. He requires painful time and effort. But as a child psychiatrist, he could be a miracle worker. Choose your therapist carefully; make sure you know your therapist's specialty and how the therapist's approach might deal with your specific issues. To use a simple metaphor--you wouldn't take a vintage 1950's Corvette to a Kia mechanic and expect the TLC such an historic automobile requires. Kia mechanics specialize in modern leaner engines and cars that don't drive so much history. It's the same with pschiatric patients. Child psychiatrists are geared towards children or psychiatric issues that are fundamentally linked to basic issues that occurred in early childhood. Adults or couples with mature adult issues probably won't like Dr. Hurwitz. His therapy takes a long time to simmer before it boils to the surface. That works well with children. Adults may not have the patience or the strength to deal with his approach. But when the match is right, Dr. Hurwitz is just what the doctor ordered.

Worst doctor I've ever been to. Rude and uncaring sums it up. Half of my visits were spent sitting there in silence since he would never respond to anything I had to say. When I told him I was having panic attacks he didn't seem to care. He has an outdated approach to therapy and should retire.

First of all, Dr. Hurwitz specialty is children. Maybe you should check the doctor who recommended him to you. Also, I have a son who saw him and I know of another child that currently sees him and I would recommend him whole-heartedly. If you do not want blunt, or truthful, go talk to a psychologist, just there to make you feel better.

Also, do you think that maybe he was not saying "you could have an abortion" but a spontaneous abortion? This is a word that the medical profession uses interchangeably with miscarriage.

Dr. Hurwitz knows children and young adults very well and can deal with them and help them very well. He tends to tell the parents the painful truths that most cannot deal with or accept. He is looking out for the best interest of the child.

Years ago, I was feeling extremely anxious and asked my doctor for a referral to someone who could help me better manage my anxiety. I ended up at Dr. Hurwitz's office.

I found him to be cold and blunt and not at all the type of person I needed at that time in my life.

I explained my anxiety to him and he seemed to brush it off as though I was there for nothing. As a former agoraphobic when I was 20 years old, anxiety is to be taken very seriously when it happens to me.

He wrote out a couple prescriptions and, when I told him I wanted to have another child (this was long ago as I said), he said if I got pregnant while taking the anti anxiety meds, I could just have an abortion.

WHAT?

I didn't take the prescriptions nor did I go back.

I didn't feel I got anything from the visit but a look at someone who had lost his passion for his field long before I got there.

I don't recommend this doctor. He may be mellower now but any man who would tell a woman wanting a child that she could have an abortion if she got pregnant on the meds he was prescribing her, isn't someone I can possibly recommend to anyone.

By the way, I did have that second child and he's a fantastic kid.

Remember, YOU are on the driver's seat when it comes to any medical professional and, if it doesn't feel right, listen to your gut and go elsewhere. I am so glad I did.

PROS: None
CONS: Blunt, uncaring, didn't seem to grasp the concept of anxiety
