Why are people rating a doctor they have never actually seen, or problems they assume they would experience but haven't?

My husband had a wonderful and very successful PRK treatment with Dr. Hyver last year, and I decided to do it this year.

He and his staff were friendly, professional and courteous all of the time. As for the time spent with the doctor during consultation, while the meeting is generally short, he took ample time to answer all of the questions I came prepared with. I was given written information for all of the possible side-effects of the procedure and drugs that go along with it. The office was incredibly clean, modern, and well maintained.

The surgery went quickly, and I felt like he and his aides explained every part of it while it was being done, and made me as comfortable as possible. I'm incredibly fearful, and they were patient in dealing with my anxiety. The communication with his office has been very easy. I've called several times with questions, and have been given prompt and helpful answers.

Go see Dr. Hyver, you won't regret it!

The office staff and other doctors at the office (who do all the exams, etc) are excellent. It is hard to rate Dr. Hyver, as you don't really spend any time with him. You have a brief 3 - 5 minute talk with him during the consultation. The rest of the hour is spent with others. During the surgery, you see him for the procedure only (not before or after) and he really didn't say much. Just did his job and went on to the next in line for the surgery.

The procedure itself, I felt was explained well, as well as possible problems. Unfortunately, I have experienced some of these problems, so I can't say I am really happy with the surgery. At this point, I wish I had not got it done, but hopefully the problems can be corrected (as I was told at the consultation that they could be should they happen). I may change my opinion over the next few months, but for now, I can only say don't expect miracles. The surgery may cause as many problems as it fixes, so you are left with some things better and some worse.

As far as Dr. Hyver, for me a good doctor is one who does his job well. I am not as concerned with his personality. So my rating is 3. This may go up or down over the next few months depending on how the problems with my eyes caused by the surgery are handled.

Pro:
I do have excellent vision in the daytime due to the custom wavefront lasik from Dr. Hyver.
Cons:
I have HORRIBLE night vision now, and NO ONE at Dr. Hyvers explained how this could be a possible effect of the surgery.
NO ONE explained what would happen during the procedure, and I have heard of patients at other offices watching videos explaining this, and being offered calming pre-op drugs. This would have helped greatly.
On surgery day I felt like I was a part in an assembly line. I didn't even see Dr. Hyver. He showed up when I was under the laser, and disappeared before I ever saw him.
After surgery I went into the office to explain my side effects, and they told me it was MY FAULT! Can you believe that? It makes me sick.

When I called and asked what chance would I have of coming out of LASIK with 20/20 vision, the person said 100%. She said that all of Scott Hyver's patients see 20/20.

That didn't seem honest to me. I have seen patients of Scott Hyver that don't see 20/20.

PROS: Good Medical school (Harvard)
CONS: Residency and Fellowship not as prestigious

I was 5 diopters in both eyes before LASIK and now am pretty much 20/20. While it cannot improve prespiopa (far sightedness as you age), I can see without glasses for much of the day. I had the monvision adjustment done so that I can continue to use my computer without corrective lenses, but have recently noticed more need for reading glasses--a fact of aging. Don't wait till you need reading glasses to have this surgery--it makes a world of difference for near sighted people.

I was considered legally blind without my classes and due to the size of my pupils was not a good candidate for LASIK surgery. With the newer technology of Wavefront surgery, not only was I able to get 20/20 vision without my contacts or glasses but I also eliminated any night halos that I had been seeing with my contacts. The entire staff at the offices of Dr. Hyver are fantastic. There is not one time that I was in the office, that I did not feel as though I was the most important patient to them. I have recommended Dr. Hyver to anyone that asks about LASIK!

I went to Scott Hyver because six of my coworkers also chose him and their surguries went well. You get to meet and speak with the surgon and after that you have a personal eye doctor who guides you through the rest of the process. The whole process was great and the results were perfect. I highly recommend this office and staff.
