I chose Dr. Rhode, in part, because of her gender. I simply am uncomfortable with the idea of a male providing gynecological care. I even checked Dr. Rhode's website and asked her nurse before scheduling my appointment to ensure she was part of an all female team.

On the day of surgery I learned that a male nurse would be doing my surgical prepping (vaginal prep)--I told him I was very uncomfortable with the idea. He convinced me I should trust him because he worked with Dr. Rhode "all the time," Foolishly I relented, thinking that at least I would be awake to protect myself. However, despite my explicit instructions, the anesthesiologist sedated me before I even entered the O.R.

A week after surgery I learned Dr. Rhode also used a male first assistant (in other words, other than Dr. Rhode, all the healthcare workers during my surgery were male.) Further, I learned she had deliberately kept secret from me the gender of her assistant.

When I tried to talk to Dr. Rhode about feeling betrayed, she trivialized my concerns by "explaining" that the gender of healthcare workers is unimportant. The bottom line is that while Dr. Rhode may be a skilled surgeon, she will utterly ignore any concerns you might express that do not align with her own views.
