Dr. Bem is an excellent surgeon, and a kind, compassionate man. He is keenly observant, was always concerned for my comfort, wanted to be sure that I was well taken care of, and that I felt well taken care of.

I wound up in the emergency room with a perforated diverticulum. Dr. Bem was on call that weekend, he explained my condition to me clearly, simply and honestly. He wanted to first try antibiotics with the hope of avoiding surgery, but that didn??t control the infection, so I wound up in surgery. I lost some bowel, and had a temporary colostomy. Three months later, after my body healed, the colostomy was reversed. Both surgeries went well: eleven day hospital stay with the first surgery, five days the second. I healed nicely and feel wonderful, in fact better than before the surgery. He made sure my husband understood my situation in the emergency room, as well as before and after both surgeries. He??s not chatty, which was just fine with me because sometimes the point is lost in a volume of words. He told me what I needed to know clearly, simply, so that I understood and so did my husband. He also told me when I needed to know it. He answered my questions in a straight forward manner, didn??t go meandering off on a tangent as some doctors do, which can be confusing.

Of all the physicians I??ve had in my nearly 60 years, Dr. Bem is outstanding. On top of his abilities as a surgeon and physician, and his kindness, he is truly a nice man.
