Joey was excellent. I was so glad we went with a home birth. She was calm, professional, respectful, and a great listener. I think she did an amazing job. I am so glad she was able to do what she does best!! I was reassured with her background and her experience! It must be a very rewarding career!
I feel that she was an answer to my prayers. I really wanted a special experience and I got that with Joey!

We desperately need good midwives to provide home birth options and alternatives to conventional "medicine". Joey is a great midwife. She assisted at the birth of our son and it was a peaceful birth. She was attentive and respectful of our wishes at every stage. We had a natural birth without any issues. At our pre- and post-natal visits, she always took as much time as we wanted to answer any questions we had.

I recommend her without reservation.

I would note though that when choosing a midwife one should have realistic expectations. When a midwife provides care in your home and has to drive all over an area like the Washington metro, where traffic can be terrible, you shouldn't expect perfect punctuality. Joey wasn't always on time for visits, but that's to be expected, especially when she gives each home visit the amount of time it needs, instead of worrying more about sticking to a schedule. And when it was time for the birth, she arrived in plenty of time.

I would highly recommend Joey as a midwife. She has extensive medical knowledge as well as homeopathic care. I have used Joey for two homebirths. I have three children: my first was born in a flagship military medical center, but I actually received better care from Joey with my subsequent home births. She was able to adequately answer all of my questions as well as my husband's when we interviewed her. She worked with our insurance company to help us get a fair coverage. She was always available for phone call consultations. We did have to be flexible with appointments due to the unpredictability of the job and she may be pulled to a labor and delivery, however, she always spoke with me to keep me posted if she was running late or needed to reschedule. I think a major part of making the decision to have a home birth is to embrace the lifestyle of going with the flow. Babies come when babies come, and I felt assured that she would be there for me during my labor and delivery when I saw how responsive she was which may have led to delayed or rescheduled routine prenatal appointments. Joey is very gentle, which can be jarring to those used to traditional medical office practices. I had to learn that I shouldn't feel weird about calling. We were partners along the journey.
My husband struggled with our first to be any sort of a support system to me. With Joey's gentle nature, she was able to empower him to be an amazing coach for the second two children.
I worked with Joey's birth assistant Laura, in addition to Joey, for both of my births. Laura has an amazing ability to meld into the family. She was very affectionate with my kids and my dog (as was Joey), to help create a great environment. Both Joey and Laura were adept at not overstepping their bounds, but were an everpresent support as we needed. They intuitively knew when to step in and when to fall back. Their postnatal checks were as noninvasive as possible. Joey provided me with great medical care in treating tears. They didn't leave the house until they had made sure that not only I knew the care instructions but one other person as well. It was nice to get to have one check up on me the next day and another a few days later. Quite frankly, my father has spent his career in analysis of hospital administration practices, and he was none too thrilled that I chose this route. But after witnessing one of the births and comparing it against the treatment I received with a hospital birth as well as his own personal experiences, he walked away with the conviction that I received better medical care because of the level of active supervision throughout my labor. He also noted that they met every necessary protocol for checking the baby and myself, but that it was a much more calming method used. They are like members of my family now.

Joey was my midwife for my third birth and first homebirth in May of 2011. Having had two other birthing experiences, I was very excited about having a homebirth! One of my births was in a hospital with an OB and my other birth was in a free-standing birth center with CNM's. The excitement of a homebirth was realized with Joey as my Midwife. I really appreciated the fact that all the prenatal visits were in my home. This really made me feel very
comfortable and more at ease than in a "medical setting." There was always ample time for our visits. All my questions were answered and I was never made to feel judged by any of my questions. Joey and Laura both always included my other children in the visits and even had time to just talk with them about "non-baby things." This really meant a lot to me. When questions of a medical nature would arise such as testing, ultrasound, etc., I
was always given the options and recommendations, and we came to decisions together. This meant so much because for one of the first times in my life I felt like a partner in my care. I really liked the way that I felt with Joey being my midwife. I felt that my body would be allowed to birth according to design and that if anything unforeseen happened that I was in medically competent hands.

Was there ever a time when our appointment began later than the time set? Sure, but how many times have you sat in a doctor's office past your appointment time and thought nothing of it. On the rare occassion when our appointment did begin late, Joey would call and let me know and our time together was always substantial. When I hired a midwife for a homebirth, I went into it knowing that she would give a lot of time to me in our appointments. How could I expect her to give any less to others. Besides, who couldn't agree that NoVA, DC, and SoMD traffic can be very unforgiving!

My labor began in the wee hours of the morning and I called Joey after timing my contractions for a while. She called Laura and they were there quickly. They entered my home calmly and quietly and were very respectful of the whole process. My birh was serene and the most peaceful one that I've had. My baby was welcomed into loving, calm hands. I couldn't have asked for more.

Joey Pascarella attended the birth of my daughter in March of 2010 and my son in February of 2012. I can not speak highly enough of her compassion, competence, and professionalism. My homebirths were my 6th and 7th babies and I have experienced a very wide scope of providers and unpleasant birth experiences. This helped me recognize the true blessing of Joey's care. Joey's instincts are amazing- she is a focused quiet observer and knows exactly when to stand back and when to jump in. She is truly gifted in her field and possesses a wealth of knowledge of the entire birth process. After my daughter's birth I required care for bleeding and Joey could not have handled it better- she reacted quickly while never breaking her calming demeanor. After this birth my parents (who had been very vocally against my birth choice) became enthusiastic supporters of homebirth. When I became pregnant again I never doubted for a second that we would use Joey as our midwife. Her confidence in me was a driving force in being able to give birth to my last child practically unassisted- ending my childbearing years with the most precious experience of my life. Joey believes in the natural birth process- this is rare in today's birth culture. The negative reviews I have read are saddening as I cant help but assume some parents do not know what homebirth entails. A midwife who visits her clients in the comfort of their own homes and takes as much time as necessary can not always work within exact time limits and appointment times. With both of my pregnancies the only times Joey ever cancelled an appointment was when she was attending a birth. Homebirth is not about constant monitoring, testing and checking. It is about letting nature take its course and having a midwife present in the event things do not go as planned. Many parents also seem to think that the mere presence of a midwife eliminates all risk associated with birth. These risks are present no matter where your baby is born and after having 5 children born in a hospital I believe with my whole heart that the 2 babies born under Joey's watchful eye were the safest.

Joey and Laura delivered both of my children. When I look at teh negative reviews here, I can't fel anything but disbelief as I cannot imagine Joey behaving this way. I believe that perhaps some anxious first time parents were truly looking for a hospital birth with all of the monitoring and interventions and so they weren't comfortable with Joey's calm way of handling the most "natural" event in life. Joey and Laura took every precaution with us to ensure that we had healthy babies and safe births. My wife and I felt that Joey was calm when we were not and needed someone else to be that for us, and she stepped up adn took charge when we were unsure of ourselves. Joey has continued long after the birth of our children to provide my wife with advice and care when needed at a moment's notice. Again, I have to say, that I really believe that Joey is as competent as a midwife can be, and I would use here again and again, and have. And by the way, our second baby, was 10lbs 12 oz, and my wife had no GD and the baby was born quickly, no tearing, and was healthy as a horse. Had we been in a hospital, it would have been a C-section against our wishes. I never doubted Joey and Laura for a second.

Joey was my midwife for my third and fourth births. My previous two children had been born via c-section. When I first met Joey, I immediately felt relaxed in her presence and as I got to know her, I felt very confident in her midwifery knowledge. The best prenatal care I received over my four pregnancies was the time I spent with Joey (and I have spent time with a birth center practice, regular ob/gyn's, dr-midwife collaborative). She is incredibly knowledgeable and non-alarmist. Without Joey, my third baby would also have been born via c-section in a hospital. My labor proceeded normally until the pushing stage, which was long. With Joey's help and direction (and patience), we were able to get my labor back on track and I pushed my baby out. It was one of the happiest moments of my life and I am very grateful to Joey for all of her help. Her professionalism after the birth attending to my needs and my baby's was very high. Joey was my midwife again during my fourth pregnancy. This labor went smoothly and quickly. The quality of care I received post-delivery was excellent.

Joey and Laura attended both my first and second births, and both were absoutely amazingly positive experiences. Joey Pascarella is everything you want in a midwife, she's non alarmist, she's respectful of your opinions and beliefs, she's absolutely professional, she lets you have the birth experience that you want. When after a few hours of pushing I asked to be checked and my son wasn't in the proper position she manually turned him and he was out within 5 minutes. She always answers the phone and answers any questions you have, anytime of day or night. She stays late at your appointment because you have a million questions, or your mom wants to talk to her, she will stay with you forever if you want, or she'll leave you alone, whatever you want. She is the best midwife around. I never had one issue with Joey and I had two awesome and very positive experiences with my homebirths and Joey and Laura. And I would use them a million times again. In fact, Joey just answered my questions about spotting when I called her and spoke to her for 15 minutes, and my baby is 9 months old. She doesn't have to do that, she does it because she loves what she does, she loves people and babies and birthing, Joey is the best. I recommend her 1000%.

If it weren't for Joey, I wouldn't have gotten my VBAC. I had a long labor and long pushing time. I have nothing but good things to say about her. I plan to use her for the rest of my children. I loved that my appointments were at my house. She is very non invasive. During labor, they let us do our thing. If we needed them, they were there, but they let us labor how we wanted. We had a great experience and highly recommend her.

n July of 2009 I hired Joey Pascarelli and her assistant Laura to attend the birth of my third child via VBAC at home. It was the most wonderful experience of my life. Joey was calm, friendly and projected quiet confidence. During labor when my contractions reached a point where I felt it was time to call her, she let me know when she and Laura would be arriving. All were on time and she was extremely respectful of my birth environment. I liken her and Laura's arrival in my home at 11PM to little church mice. They busied themselves with paperwork in my kitchen and left me to labor in privacy in my bedroom. When my labor progressed, Joey and Laura moved quietly into my bedroom and if they needed to speak, did so in respectful whispers. I was incredibly impressed with her ability to guage the progress of my labor strictly from my vocalizations. For example, she never checked my dilation (although offered to if I wanted it done), but was still able to tell me at one point that if I were to reach down I would be able to touch the baby's head. I was in a birthing pool on the other side of the room! Laura was close by keeping me hydrated and checking the baby's heart rate. Perhaps we come into the birthing experience with different expectations and this impacts our view of our midwife. I wanted someone who would be very hands off and would let me be until I needed her. Someone else may have viewed Joey as disengaged whereas I viewed her as being respectful of my experience. She was not always on time to our prenatal appointments but I understood this to come with the territory and it didn't impact me negatively. A few times during our appointments her phone would ring and sometimes she would apologize and briefly take a call because it was another client who she explained was close to her due date. I took this as a good sign that she would be available. After my son was born at 5AM, I had a second degree tear and needed some stitches. This was taken care of quickly and professionally. Clean up was quick and thorough. The few weeks after my son was born, I had some nursing issues and Joey was very available to answer my questions and called in a prescription cream for me on two different occasions. I would happily use Joey again and recommend her to other like-minded women!

I cannot recommend Joey at all. She is unprofessional, negligent, and unlicensed! During my interview with her, she claimed to be licensed in the state of Virginia. After my horrific birth, I came to find out her license had been expired for over 2 years. So, she lied to me.

She was very nice during the interview which is why I ignored the negative reviews I found online. All the prenatal appointments went well. She was awful during my labor, however. She read books, slept, knitted, and talked on the phone for most of my labor. She actually left me to go home (she lives 1 hour away in MD) to feed her dogs (this was after she told me I was at 7cm with an internal check and after breaking my water) even though my mother asked her not to leave. She did not return until 9 hours later. She went to bed and slept for the night and came back in the morning. By the point my labor had slowed because I had lost all trust in her. I did not feel comfortable with her any longer. I transferred to the hospital where my baby was put in the NICU for 8 days for an infection he received while my water was broken at home. My temperature was checked only once during the period my water was broken and there was minimal fetal heart monitoring. Had my baby been born at home while she was gone, this could have been a very scary and dangerous outcome. I encourage you to look for a different midwife if you are considering her.

I have submitted a complaint to the Virginia Department of Health Professions and from what I understand there was already a formal investigation taking place. You will find that she now has her license. She renewed it in November of 2011.

Here is my story with Joey take it as you will:

For my second delivery, I decided on a home birth, my first was uncomplicated.

During my entire labor process Joey was on the phone with her partner. It was my impression that she wanted to go home.

After delivery I hemmorhaged and passed out, although I was given medicine, I continued to bleed and was unable to get up.

My daughter, who was large at birth (I did not have gestational diabetes), had low blood sugar. The first time Joey tested her, a few hours after birth, she was in the high 20's. At this point my husband was instructed to give her formula from a syringe to avoid nipple confusion. When she continued to shake my mother was told by Joey that it was 'the startle reflex'

A hour or so later Joey retested my daughter and her blood sugar reading was 27. Shortly there after she left. She was on the phone almost the entire time

Not long after she left, I called Joey because I was still bleeding and my daughter was still shaking (from low blood sugar). I was told not to call an ambulance and my family was told to wait until the morning.

The ambulance was called by a concerned family member, Joey had already left. I spent 4 days in the hospital and was offered a blood transfusion. My daughter spent a week in the NICU. I was told by the NICU doctor she was within hours of suffering brain damage from low blood sugar.

In addition, my families' photograph is still used on her website for publicity, it is very touching. Unfortunately, even though I have emailed her, she is not required to take it down because I signed a photo release while I was still pregnant.

Also, on her website she gives her birth statistics. My daughters statistics are not included in her numbers.

This is my story, and take of it what you will.

When she continued to shake my mother was told by Joey that it was 'the startle reflex'

.

My husband and I loved having Joey for my midwife. She helped me deliver both my sons. My oldest son was born in 2007 at The Maternity Center in Bethesda, and my youngest son was born in 2010 at home. If we have a third child, we will be hiring Joey again. She is extremely good at what she does. She is quiet, laid back, and very kind.
