... when I read this in New Mobility Magazine a few years back, I just couldn't believe it:

"Last year, Bach approached Christopher Reeve about switching to a Pneumobelt and mouthpiece ventilation, but the actor didn't want to do it. Why? 'It does require a lot of work to learn the new techniques, and I had the impression he was afraid of failing,' Bach says. 'Also, he still expects to recover. So he's thinking, `What difference does this intermediate action make if I'm going to be walking and breathing on my own?' 'It's unfortunate for other people with spinal cord injury whose doctors don't know about taking out trach tubes,' Bach adds. 'His example could have saved a lot of people a lot of complications.'"

To me, this is a glaring example of a doctor putting his own snitty ego ahead of any shred of professionalism. Chris Reeve was a patient like any other patient - he had a right to make his own choices about his body, and he had a right to privacy. But this doctor goes to a national publication, violates his confidence and basically accuses him of cowardice, all because he's pissed off that he didn't get to be The Doctor Who Made Superman Breathe Again."

Maybe he's so good at what he does that it's worth going to him, but personally, I would have trust issues.

Dr. Bach was my daughter's rehab doc. We travelled all the way to Newark, NJ, from Kansas City to see him. He pioneered a method of non invasive ventilation that allowed my daughter to live a much longer, healthier, and happier life than all previous doctors had told me was possible. He is an expert in Spinal Muscular Atrophy especially the respiratory support needed in times of illness.
