I usually take my daughter to see Dr. Lively at healthcare for children in Liberty, mo.Dr Lively has been an excellent DR to my daughter and we enjoy him very much. However, three days ago my daughter started coughing and I called to make her an apt. and was told Dr Lively is on vacation so they set me an apt with Dr Hertenstein . I had no idea what I was in for. I will tell the step by step story as we only had met for maybe 7-8 minutes if that.
At first he came in and seemed okay. He said sorry for your wait and started telling me that his day has been off as things have come up unexpected. He then looked at my daughter, checked her ears, nose, diaper rash all very quickly. Which the visit is still going okay. This is where it turns weird. He started writing in her file not saying anything. I waited a couple minutes then asked so is that rash diaper rash. He said yes. Then handed me a printout on cloth diapers. Not realistic for a very a busy mom, I replied I probably wont be able to do that. When he handed it to me my daughter grabbed it as any 8 month old would and he said very rudely like he was my dad and yelling at me, you might not want to let her rip that up, its important. I thought wow but disregarded it and moved on to my next question since he wasnt doing what a normal GOOD dr does, which is tell you whats wrong, explain the severity, what he will prescribe, ect. So I asked , does she have a cold or ear infection? He said yes upper respiratory and ear infection.
Then the dramatic ending. My third question what ear is the infection in and is it a bad one. I guess at this point I started annoying him with my question and he became super defensive. Still not sure why as I play the 8 minutes back in my head. But he left me by saying Yes its a bad one in the right ear. I have been doing this for a lot of years and it may look like just a few seconds of examining your kid but I know what Im looking for he threw the prescription down in my lap and said heres a script this will cure your kid and walked out.
I was shocked and left there very upset. I can see from other reviews this is not the first person who has experienced this wih dr Hertenstein. How he has any patients is beyond me. But I wanted to tell my story for others to read. And unfortunately, now we have to find a new pediatrician to go too. Again I love DR. Lively but we cant take the chance of having to see Dr Hertenstein. He may know what hes doing, I do believe that. But to treat a first time mom whose baby is sick like that was shocking. I left feeling like I needed to go see another dr. I certainly had not developed a trust with this dr, which to me is very important. Of course I had a few more questions, that I ended up having to ask the pharmacist and I called up there this morning and asked a nurse a couple too. Im sorry that he felt like I was so annoying with my couple of questions about my daughter and her health and Im sorry that he felt the need to become so defensive (still super werid) but most of all Im sorry I ever met him.

When I went to talk about the options about vaccines and the dangers that I heard about them I was given the 3rd degree and was being yelled at for even asking a question about this. The defenses went up right away, and I was only asking questions to see if this was something that I was going to do for my child. His manners as a doctor and the ability to teach the parent about risks is TERRIBLE!!!!

Dr. Rinker has been seeing my son since he was born. She always makes sure she has covered every question I have. Saves me money with samples and shows a real concern for my sons health.

The fact that I can call and ask a question anytime is something I have never heard of with a pediatrician and came in handy when my son was first born.

I definetely recommend this office.

Dr. Hertenstein is a caring and knowledgeable pediatrician. My son has seen him many times--for ear infections, rashes, etc. Oftentimes, John Hertenstein can identify the problem within moments, and we'll be out of there with a prescription or care recommendation very quickly. Patients can call 24 hours a day--there are urgent care weekend hours, and a nighttime call service that will page a doctor if necessary. We have been very satisfied with Healthcare for Children.

Excellent with children. His waiting room is divided for sick children and those coming in for shots, asthma, etc. Children are not afraid of Dr. Hertenstein and he has a very loving staff.
