AVOID psychiatrist Laurance Johnson. He is now on Fair Oaks Ave in Pasadena. HORRIBLE doctor. DON'T TAKE YOUR CHILD TO HIM. He's in his 70s now. I was his patient as a young woman, , during the 80s and 90s. He was referred to us by my mom's therapist. In fact, Dr. Johnson talked about Dr. Koch in front of me, insulting her and calling her "ugly", even though she was my mom's therapist. I could fill a book with all his unprofessional and cruel comments and behavior. After 8 years as his patient, a prominent psychiatrist named Dr. John Lindon had to refer me to another analyst because Lindon thought Dr Johnson was harmful and had damaged my life.
Dr. Johnson told me, during my sessions, about how PARENTS WOULD GET ANGRY WITH HIM for how he treated their children. Dr. Johnson told me many times that most parents would not keep their kids in therapy with him for as long as mine did, because the parents didn't like him. He pushed me to go on medication when I was 15 but he DID NOT DO FOLLOW-UP. I did not improve on any of the medication, but he never noticed. He kept writing me the same prescriptions.
When I first started seeing Dr. Johnson, at age 13, he WOULD NOT MEET MY EYE, wouldn't look at me, during sessions, did not smile. He stared down at a clipboard and doodled on a piece of paper. When he spoke he was irritable and arrogant. During one session I tried to get his attention and he verbally attacked me.
After a while Johnson started using my sessions to bring up IRRELEVANT TOPICS. He would talk to me about his personal and professional problems. I've since learned that he does this with all of his young patients. He complained about his ex-wives, about his kids and his other patients. Most of the topics were TOTALLY INAPPROPRIATE FOR CHILDREN. HE TALKED ABOUT ADULT SEXUAL MATTERS that had nothing to do with me. For example during a session when I was 14 he told me a strange story about an adult patient of his who could not get an erection. During a session he referred to my 14-year-old friend as a "prick teaser". I now know that he hits on adult female patients, and I realize that he told me these weird sexual stories because he wanted to get into sexual conversations with me and have a relationship beyond the patient/therapist one. The fact I was a teenager, and his patient, was no barrier to him He thinks it's perfectly acceptable to spew his sexist bile in front of other peoples children.
Dr. Johnson used to be in an office on ALESSANDRO PLACE in Pasadena. The waiting room there was small and was directly connected to his office. Once when I was a teenager I was sitting in this waiting room before a session. Dr Johnson saw I was there. He turned up the volume on a phone sex message so that I would hear it from the waiting room. My parents were never around so he knew he could get away with it.
He told me a story once about how he was driving home after work, it was dark out, and he saw one of the nurses he knew walking down the street. Dr. Johnson said he slowed down, pulled up next to the nurse and said "Hey little girl, do you want some candy?". The nurse even told him that he scared her. Great story to be telling a young woman patient.
Johnson said VERBALLY ABUSIVE things to me like "Can you get that through your thick skull?". He basically did gay conversion therapy on me. He said any gay feelings I had were a mental disorder. He said I could change and that I didnt have a bad case of it. I took him very seriously and tried to de-gay myself. I tried for years to become another person because of this MORON. I also thought that maybe the weird sexual stories he told me were part of that whole making-me-not-gay process. Sometimes he'd rant about how some psychiatric association had stopped labeling homosexuality as a mental disorder.
As my therapy with Johnson was ending, one of the doctors he referred me to was a Dr. Christina Friar in Encino. Johnson raved about how great Friar was. I called her and made an appointment. Dr. Friar said she did not know Dr Johnson. She seemed confused as to why he would refer a patient to her.

I knew Dr. Johnson for many years. I also know, and know of, other doctors who worked with Dr. Johnson . They all basically said the same thing about Dr. Johnson, which is that he has anger issues, and that he is arrogant and uncaring.
