I seen this Dr a few years ago, for an emergency root canal. I went back a few different times, took antibiotics for 6 weeks trying to get rid of my infection. After going back a few times, and seeing a different Dr. nearly every visit. Finally, one of them told me, they could not help me, and refered me to a specialist. They kept going and getting other dr's to come look, then leave talking quietly, I found this strange, but just thought, maybe they couldn't figure out what to do about the infection. I had gone there to avoid having a long drive, to Tacoma, having 3 babies at home. (2 premie twins) When he refered me, I decided to just go ahead and see my normal Dr. in Tacoma, for a second oppinion. When getting there, he examined me, and told me after accessing my (front tooth) that this was going to require a specialist. When finally going to the Specialist, he told me, the first dentist, had fractured the root, in my front tooth. That I had an exchange going on, exchanging bacteria between my mouth and tooth. This would require the romoval of my front tooth... I, after going through all of this, to find out that the quacks there, had cost me my front tooth, decided to go back, on the advice of my Dr. and get my $1200 refunded. He explained to me, they could not charge for a root canal, if they had not completed the job, and I had to pay someone else, so I was being charged twice for one service. My dentist told me he wasn't in the habbit of telling people to sue, but! That was all he had to say about that. Like some of the other comments I saw on here, of course, the customer service himmed and hawwed, over giving me money back. I am not one that likes to sue, but at this point, I told them my Husband would be in that afternoon to collect, and they better have it, or I would see them in court! And for a much larger amount... Wow! Let me tell you, they changed their tune in a hurry. I am guessing, this has happened before, and they did not come out smelling of roses. When my husband arrived, not only did they have a full refund, but served it with a pleasant smile, and a have a wonderful day attitude... I never thought of writing about this, untill this morning, while looking for a local dentist for my daughter, happened to stumble on the comments listed here. I felt it was my obligation, to let as many people know as I can, over the years, but never thought, to post it on the internet, till now... I don't like to bad mouth anyone! The fact I didn't sue him, for my expenses I encoured, as a result of his screw up, I think shows, I am not a vindictive type of person. I do however believe in warning others, as I hope that I can save others, from having to go through the pain, imbarrassment, and costs, that I have. Not to mention, the future, if I ever have to have more work done on my perm. bridge, that has a life of about 20 years. I hope this helps in your efforts to choose a compitent Dr. Thank you for your time to read this! And please overlook any spelling errors, that is not my strong suit. Thanks again! I also would like to mention, I did find it odd, as well as my sister, who I found out later, had gone there as well, that there weren't really any licenses hanging on the wall, for the amount of different dentists that we had seen in there. Infact, I only remembered seeing one! HMMM! Very strange!

My first visit there, Dr. Ostheller had mixed up my adult x-rays with a child's x-rays. He said I had cavities in the places that I didn't and that I didn't have cavities where I did. I said I'm sure I have a couple of bad cavities in certain areas and he said no. After trying to tell him that's not right, he finally realized that it was some kids x-ray that he was reading-not mine, and he was going to or had already told the kid and his/her parent about his/her x-rays which were really mine!!

They got the time of my first appointment wrong and said I could wait around in the waiting room to see if anyone cancelled. Since that is ridiculous I left the office and they actually sent one of their staff members out after me to rough me up or something. Truly the worst customer service I have had at any time in my life. Reading the other reviews here I can see that I was probably saved the pain of actually going to this dentist.

Is it possible to rate at 0 or less. I had dental treatment during Jan,Feb, 2005 in SLC Utah from Dr Ostheller when he was Holladay Dental. I had double insurance and was told that my out of pocket would be approx $400. After paying $664 by Dec 2005, I assumed I would be getting a refund once both insurances had paid. I had to go through the insurance papers to find why the insurance hadn't paid. I informed Dr. Ostheller's employee, Christine, what was missing and what info the insurance company needed. I received no further correspondence from his office until 7/16/08, when I was notified by a collection agency that I owed $388.50. I couldn't find him in the SLC phone directory so I Googled him. My oh my, he does get around. He has practices listed in the following Utah towns: Alpine, SLC, Pleasant Grove, Lehi, and Payson. I called each listed office and either the phone had been disconnected or Dr. Ostheller didn't work there. I finally found him in Lehi under Ostheller Family Dentistry. His billing practices are clever, to say the least. Wait 2 1/2 years until the patient has shredded his records, then turn the patient in to a collection agency. I have left my name and phone #'s at his Lehi office. He has yet to return my call. Anyone who does business with Dr. Ostheller should be advised to save his records indefinitely to avoid the frustration I have been through. I would definitely rate him a -2, and recommend him to my worst enemy.

Dr. Joseph Ostheller is a wonderful dentist who was able to master all aspects of dentistry. I just became a patient of his this past year, 2008, after a very bad experience with two overpriced and uncaring dentists. Dr. Joe's practice is founded on good moral priniciples and they sincerely care about our oral health and our pocketbook. Dr. Joe's office accepts our insurance and only charges what our insurance is willing to pay. This has made it possible for myself and my husband to take complete care of our teeth. In addition, Dr. Joe not only has a full education in General Dentistry but was also able to complete several courses in gum care, root canals, orthodontics and others. Dr. Joe is not the only dentist that treated me so I can tell you first hand, many of his staff are qualified individuals, which includes most of his dental technicians. We are very happy with their Gig Harbor and Port Orchard offices, however... it's obvious that their main concern isn't a lovely waiting room with furniture and window treatments that costs thousands of dollars but it is just as clean as any other dental outfit.

I went to Family Dentistry to get a root canal. The first time I went in they cleaned out my infection and told me to come back next week. Next week they fiddled around in my mouth for about 40 minutes and told me to come back next week. The next week I came beck and they told me the same thing! Then I chose to change Doctors because I wasn't comfortable going somewhere where they don't really know what they are doing. Then a month later I got a bill in the mail for a complete root canal when all they ever did was clean out my mouth! Then when I called them about this they tried telling me cleaning it out was 90% of the procedure. Luckily I have a sister who is an endodontist (she specializes in root canals and those type of procedures.) So she called the office and after three weeks we got it straightened out and they admitted they billed my incorrectly and fixed it. However they never once apologized for jerking us around like that. I was VERY unhappy with the service I received.

I have gone to this office for several years and have always had caring and thorough treatment. I have tmj and braces and Dr. Joe has been nothing but excellent. I could give a crap that he is only in his offices only a few days a month. I would rather have a dentist that will work WITH me than have one that is local and a real jerk. I have been to several other dentists in the Port Orchard area and Joe was my last hope. If I can't go to Dr. Joe then I won't go to anyone. He's the best dentist I've ever had.

PROS: Friendly, caring, well trained, thorough, family oriented
CONS: None

My regular dentist was on vacation and I had a filling falling out so they recommended me to Dr. Ostheller, I'm not sure if they had ever even been to this office or if it was just because it was near their own. So I made an appointment with them and got in the next day which was great. The office was small, their AC was broken and the dental assistant what was supposed to be checking me in kept leaving to go complain about the heat and try to fix it, afteer about 10 mins of listening to her try to figure out the heat problem she finally got the dentist in. It was not the dentist the facility is named for, he was not from around here and you could tell english wasn't his first language, it was hard to understand him half the time, but he didn't seem like a bad guy. He told me I needed to have my filling replaced and they could do it that day which was fine by me. Their equipment was old, same technology that was used 20 years ago, the drill had some sort of leak and kept dripping all over my kneck, arm, hair etc, they didnt even put one of those little paper bibs on my chest until they had already started, OH and the dentist started working on the filling before the assistant was back from playing w/ the AC equipment. I had a white filling put in and when they put the acid etching stuff on the tooth they dripped some on my lip and that stuff burns! They kept dropping the tools, and the whole procedure just seemed a wreck. Oh and my appointment was at 2, I didn't get out until about 3:45, and towards the end of the appointment the other assistant was yelling for the dentist becsaue he was taking too long and had othe patients waiting. Aside from all that the filling did seem to turn out nicely, it is smooth and my teeth fit together perfect. I definitely wouldn't pick this as my first choice for my next check up.

PROS: Nice final work
CONS: cluttered work, old equpiment, you don't feel like a priority

This office is owned by one dentist, and he actually only works in the office a few days every month, as he lives in Utah. He hires the dentists in the office for the other work.
I had a bad experience at this dental office. When I made my appointment I specifically asked for an appointment with the dentist listed in his yellow page ad. It wasn't until I went in for my appointment was I told I would not be actually seeing that dentist, because I wasn't there on one of those "few days in the month" I went forward with the appointment anyway. During my exam, the dentist noted I needed a filling. They said they could do it that day. I agreed only on the condition I leave by a certain time due to babysitting circumstances. The dentist said it could be done. I did not get out of the office until 1 hour past my deadline. There was nothing I could do. The dentist had prepped me, started the work, and then kept bouncing in and out doing other exams on other patients. Needless to say I will not go back.
